Title: Any Glock freaks out there?
Post by: jackelope on October 08, 2010, 09:37:46 AM
I just picked up a new G22 and it was recommended to me to do a couple upgrades. I'm not familiar with much with the inner workings of these pistols so I'm looking for opinions here. I appreciate any input. These are the things that were recommended:
Extended Slide Release
3.5lb Disconnect
Trigger Job
Anything else that is recommended I'm open ears.
Thanks!

Not a glock freak, but I was in the Bargain Hunter here in Spokane Valley and he had Glock law enforcement turn is for $359. He was telling me that when the Glock reps come to town (Sharo Shooters Range) they will do a rebuild on the spot free of charge for you. Doubt it will include any of the listed, but still a good deal.

Most men don't like the extended slide release, if you are shooting iso, thumbs forward it can catch a knuckle.  If you are just a plinker it probably doesn't matter.  On the other hand my wife shoots a G34 no problem with the stock extended release and loves it.  In fact, it is probably one of the biggest reasons she purchased it as she can easily reach it with out shifting grip too much and she had problems manipulating the stock release on the other Glocks and M&P's.  I have shot her pistol maybe 2k times and never had a problem with the extended release.

As far as triggers go I would go with a Vanek Trigger.  That fella knows his Glock triggers and they are priced right too. www.vanekcustom.com (http://www.vanekcustom.com)
I would go with the Custom or Grand Master.  If you ever want to shoot competition, just go with the Custom or GM, you will be able to shoot that trigger in most divisions.

As far as anything else goes I would get rid of the stock sights or at least black out the white.  Dawson makes a great Fiber optic sight.  Most people preffer the FO sights, I preffer a blacked out serrated blade Front/Rear but I can see where the FO can be picked up a whole lot quicker.

Put in the connector http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/GNS157-1.html (http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/GNS157-1.html) and if that doesn't improve the trigger enough for you try a lighter spring. Glocks are capable of good triggers and due to the fact that the parts for one pretty much fit all they are cheap to work on or you can go the Vanek route.

I've had a Glock 23 for 20 years. All I had done to it was having it throated, polished and Trijicon night sights. No jamming, nothing .
Very good gun to carry. Wouldn't trade it for anything. :twocents:

Got a 17 and 17l.  Only mod was to cut the extended mag release down on the 17L - it was being tripped by my holster and dropping the mag right out :bash:. Didn't like the idea of donating mags to the woods, so out came the SAK saw and off she went.

Love the guns - have had the 17 for 16 years now - my carry gun - goes about everywhere I do.  Accurate and no corrosion issues even after being in a soaking whet pack for a week.  Clean em if you want, or don't.

Hopefully I've got a 26 in my future - maybe 2

Looking to put night sights on both.  What good sturdy ones are out there :dunno:

It's a slide lock not a slide release  :'( .

No I would not get the extended one on it.  The only time you should be using it is if you need to lock the slide to the rear.  Gross motor skills for working the action.

I keep my stock 4.5 pound trigger in my glocks.  The 3.5 is nice for precision work but for carry, self defense, plinking its not necessary.  If you do get a different trigger group for your glock, don't let a gunsmith soak you on labor.  It should take 5 min or less to do the trigger job and 1 tool  which is basically a small punch with a handle.

A trick for follow up shots on the glock, let the trigger out till you feel the "click" the trigger is now prepped and ready to squeeze again.  Prepping the trigger before breaking the shot is a good tactic with how the glock trigger works.

The only other suggestion is if you want to shoot lead bullets through the gun is to get a after market barrel for it.  It will void the warranty and is not safe to shoot lead through a stock glock barrel due to the shape of the rifling.

:yeah:  Don't use slidelock to release, slide.  Only thing I upgrades was to nightsights.  I don't shoot lead, but if you want to get a different barrel.  Lead build up on the stock barrel will cause the gun to explode.  It is caused by not having normal rifling, the lead buildup is so bad after a few rounds that the barrel is too small for the round to go down it.  Like Shoot said just let trigger out just a hair until it clicks and that goes along way to shooting faster.

Resetting the trigger is a good fundemental you should practice when shooting any semi-auto weapon weather it be a tactical rifle or a pistol

I must be a freak. I have a 26, 27, 21, 22 and 23. The only changes I made to them was installing Heinie Slant Pro trijicon sights on the 21, 22 and 23, but have changed the 23 over to the Optima 2000 red dot sight (they are now sold as JPoint) since I can't focus on the front sight so well any more. The 27 has the New York #1 trigger and XS Big Dot sight systems (same issue with the front sight). The 21 has the extended mag release, since it was difficult to reach the stock release without changing my grip. My recommendation would be to not make any changes to your pistol until after you put a few hundred rounds through it. By then, you will know what you want to change, if anything.

The Glock is a very easy pistol to work on, but it helps to get a video and book or two that go through the steps for stripping it down in case you want to make any modifications. If you have a buddy who is knowledgeable about Glocks (really knows, not just thinks he knows) ask him/her to show you how to take it down.

Check this web site: http://glocktalk.com/ (http://glocktalk.com/) for more information (mostly good, some not so good).

Enjoy!

No need to for the trigger stuff, just shoot it and the trigger will break it self in.
