Title: 458 Lott -- Anyone ever shoot one of these?
Post by: ADAMS on October 08, 2010, 04:58:27 PM: I just acquired a Ruger #1 Tropical Stainless in .458 Lott.

No, I have no plans for a trip to Africa nor do I expect to have to stop an 18 wheeler.

Anyone have any experience with this cartridge? You can skip the part about your shoulder looking like a baboon's ass.

Post by: tlbradford on November 08, 2010, 02:37:57 PM: This is on my list when I head to Africa. Great caliber. Outperforms the .458 winny on every level, but you can still shoot .458 winchester factory loads to save a little on ammo cost for practice. Used by many PH's.

I read that it will drive a 600gr bullet at the velocity that the .458 Win will send a 500 gr bullet.

It's a nice rifle. It would be fun to do some penetration tests. One guy told me that he shot clear through a cape buffalo. In through the chest and out the rump.

Post by: tlbradford on November 08, 2010, 03:50:20 PM: When I researched the caliber I read that the hydrostatic shock will actually do the killing. Supposedly turns the major organs into jelly. That would be pretty cool to see. That was in regards to lions.

Right now it's doing pretty good as a conversation piece. I have no idea. I have a .338 Win Mag, also a Ruger No. 1, that's adequate for the biggest and baddest that this continent has to offer.

I shoot a Weatherby 300, and I can shoot that fewer times comfortable than the 458. Very cool to put a shell the size of your finger down the tube.... Should be a great elk gun inside 100 yrds. Could also kill trucks, small hydroelectric projects, road blocks...

Post by: Hyde on November 08, 2010, 09:07:08 PM: I know of a 5'5" 120 LB woman who shoots one and has taken several buff with it. I haven't fired one, but have been told it isn't so bad. If you are ever at the Renton range, I'd love to take a crack with it. I'll even pitch in on the ammo. (it can't be cheap...)

I think it's in the 9 pound range. It's a relatively short gun even with a 24" tube ... er, pipe.

Post by: yorketransport on November 09, 2010, 08:21:34 PM: I had a buddy's for a while so that I could work up some loads for him. His was the CZ550. Great caliber that's very versatile. You don't need to run it full speed all the time, just when somebody else is watching. :chuckle: It was a very accurate caliber once I got the propper technique down. Shooting from seated position at the bench was not fun. From a standing bench though, load development wasn't all that bad.

You're going to love that gun. :IBCOOL:
