Anyone have experience with custom barrels?
I am starting to think about building my own rifle, and wondering if you guys have any opinons/sugggest/bewares on barrels.
-
krieger, shilan, or a douglas are your best bet. your gona pay for them, but you get what you pay for. i know a guy who does will do bbl work, i can look up his number if you want.hert also makes a good bbl.
-
cant say your building a rifle without sayin what you want.. i have a rifle i would like to rebuild myself, if i ever come up with the dough.
-
Shilen, Pac-Nor, Krieger, Liga or Hart are good ones. Im having some work done on one of my rifles and almost had it re-barreled this year...... Maybe next year. lots of good match grade barrels out there. Getting a good action is very important also. :dunno:
I have a Krieger and its great. My next Barrel will most likely be a Pac-Nor super match grade don't know what cal yet though so many choices so little time......
Getting a quality stock is very important also.

Lilja & Shilen...
-
The 6.5 swede has been interesting to me, but I bet I don't have th ebucks.
-
i myself am interested in one day building a larger medium bore (35 or bigger) bolt rifle. i envision a very short , handy, rifle to hang on the side of my saddle. it should have a ghost ring. and be synthetic of stock. tho the finish is ugly, it should also have a parkerized finish
-
another vote for Lilja, check them out here.

Douglas, Hart, Shilen are all reputed to be top-shelf.

You could always sell plasma..........
-
All my customs wear Shilen's, had really good luck with them. My Ultra Lightweight has a Kreiger, its a one hole'r.
-
I did that once for beer in college. Talk about getting more bang for your buck. Sell your plasma and replace it with beer.

:chuckle:

I have a Pac-Nor in 6.5 x 308 AI that is a dandy :IBCOOL:
The other brands mentioned are all good also
-
I have one Lilja, any of the barrels listed above are good. The guy who built my rifle swears by the Lilja. Mine shoots a 180 into -.5 with a Partition at 3400fps no muzzle brake.
-
I don't have the money either, it was just a way to get enough people to respond. :hello:
-
I have a broughton canted twist that shoots very well. another that is not mentioned is schneider and mike rock....all better than great barrels. I would go with what ever your smith likes.
-
I'll 2nd the mike rock, but the money :'(
-
I ordered a custom rifle today with a Pac-Nor super match grade barrel............................I'm such a gun WHORE
I'll post some pics in 6 months.

How do you like em?

If you were asking about my two Pac-Nors? I'm very pleased.
The 6x45mm is very accurate with just about anything I try in it, the 25-204 is my favorite deer rifle right now.

Where do you live? There is a custom barrel manufacturer in Arlington, Ive been to the shop and he ran me through all the machines and there process, pretty cool and they definetly do quality work. Let me know if your interest and I get you there contact information.
-
I have Oly Arms,Wilson,Rock,Lilja,Shilen,Schneider,PacNor,Douglas,Kreiger,Hart...and a passle of others.
PacNor is easily my favorite....................
-
Talked to my gunsmith and decided on a #4 contour, fluted, PAC NOR super match, 3 Groove, stainless steel, 1:10 twist, 26 in barrel chambered in 7MM STW.........should be a shooter :)
-
Nothin wrong w/ that bugger.... no more blaiming the gun :)
-
I've had some very good results with cut-rifled barrels from Krieger for precision/long-range shooting. Have a good old Hart that refuses to die. Also an Obermeyer waiting to be installed after the latest Krieger dies. No bad results with a custom tube yet.
-
Have two with douglas barrels. 3006 and 7X57. Great for the money. Both will shoot well under 1" with decent loads. Can't go wrong with Hart, Lilja or Shilen. ;)
