Well what a fun hunting season so far. From September 13th to October 5th I worked all of 3 days. Between sheep and elk hunting I’ve been all over a lot of this state.
There is a lot of family, and friend to thank for all of the help in my ram hunt. My son Thomas, Cousin Jeff, and his son Cole, nephews Chris, Ryan, and Dale. Friends Jim and Larry for letting me park the motor home and 5th wheel at his place in Sunland. Also Mark (woodywsu) on this site. Who keep me informed on where they were seeing sheep.
The first 3 day of the ram hunt, we where seeing sheep from one end of the unit to the other. On opening morning we where eating breakfast from Larry’s front porch, and had over 20 rams in the spotting scope. The joke for those first few days was that I could carry my riffle, but someone else had the bullets. That way I would have to hold out for a bigger ram.
We saw the other hunters on the river opening morning. I was hoping that some one would get theirs and we could see it and judge what a ram was from that unit. Late on the first day I have video of 3 rams along the river getting a drink. We floated by at around 40 yards.
Well after 3 days of sheep hunting. I left to go elk hunting. My cousin Jeff and I had the only 2 riffle elk tags for the early Toutle hunt that started the next week. The only thing was that Jeff’s wife had emergency surgery on that Friday. He wasn’t sure if he could go on the elk hunt. I went down on the 1st day and had a good bull give me the slip. Too much fog and rain. But Jeff got to come down on the last 3 days and on Thursday the bull didn’t get away a 2nd time. On Friday I missed a shot on a bull about as big as Jeff’s. No worries I still have a bull tag for White River unit.
Well now back to ram hunting. We went back on 9-29-10. Got to Larry’s around 10:00A.M. Set up camp, got the sled into the river, and started to see sheep right away. We had one group of 5 rams on the river bank at about 30 yards. One of the rams we thought would go around 160, 162. I told Chris and Ryan that we had all day, and tomorrow to find a bigger one. I was waiting for my son to get there on Saturday to be with me. On Friday Jim and Ryan hiked up into Box Canyon. Chris and I went up into Quilomene creek looking back in off the river. Mark called me that morning and said that I should keep looking in the West Bar area. We had seen a big ram up there when scouting, and had not seen him again. He said they seen it earlier that week with the band of ewes. Later that day, the band of rams we had been seeing on West Bar went from 9 to 14. We seen a good ram in the bunch and decided to come back on Saturday. On Saturday morning we saw the 160 ram that I like, about 200 yards off the river. I said does anyone what to see a ram die. They all said lets go to West Bar and look. Thank GOD we did. We found the rams, climbed up to their level. Thomas said 190 yard. One shot and it was done. The only thing that had me worried was if he had rolled down 30 more yards he would have been over the edge , and 300 yards down a rock shoot to the river. After lots of pictures and hugs, we caped, quartered and got back to the sled. Then it was PARTY ON!!!
Back at camp here’s what we got for a green score. Left 35 2/8. Base 14 2/8, 13 7/8 13, 9 3/8. Right 36, 14 2/8, 13 6/8, 13 3/8, 9 6/8
And thanks to my wife. I get to have a full body mount.

Great work Tom. Glad I could be some help. That ram is one of the best in the unit. ;)
-
Thanks Mark. If you had not called, I may have settled for a different ram.
-
You shot one of my pets :chuckle: We usually see that West Bar group while out duck and chukar hunting.
-
Thanks for letting me get one of the best ones out there. That must be a great bird hunt area? We seen so many chukar, quail, ducks, geese, and turkeys everday we where there.

Shhhhhh :chuckle:
That desolate sagebrush area is a hunters paradise. Real rough terrain over a lot of it though and most of it requires boat access.

Here's a few more pics from Cousin Muff's elk hunt and the ram hunt. One of the ram pictures gives a good perspective of just how step it was an how close he was to going over the edge.
-
Love the additional pics, ram is great looking as well as the bull.
