You did get a tip, and hunting season is upon us. Can't expect much more than that in 12 hours during one of the busiest times of the year for the members of this site. If you give it a chance you'll find there are a lot of great people here to help a new hunter get started right. Wish I knew something about that unit but unfortunately, I don't. If you are looking for a basic "how to" hunting approach, help people help you by asking for pointers and be specific. Most people are more than willing to share their knowledge and expertise regarding the "how" part; just don't expect a whole lot on the "where to go" part. If you stick to public land and/or private timber company land, the rule of thumb is they get a lot of pressure so you have to get back in or find overlooked spots that hold game. Finding game is best done by glassing or boot time hiking, or both. Not knowing anything else about you or what you need help with, I hope this helps.

If you spent some time reading past posts, you would notice that until you have shared some stories and pictures, that most of the members on here are reluctant to divulge information to someone they dont know.
Especially if they have spent any time at all in the area you are asking about, they might not want to take a chance on possibly having a new person camping/hunting in the same area they do.
you are probably a decent person, but some A-holes do show up on this site,

GMU 574-WIND RIVER (Skamania and Klickitat counties):
2006 General Harvest = (Deer - 80) ( Elk - 102) ( Bear - 8) ( Cougar - 1) (Turkey - 15)
2007 General Harvest = (Deer - 103) ( Elk - 89)( Bear -16) ( Cougar - ?)(Turkey -10)
2008 General Harvest = (Deer - 59) ( Elk - 44) ( Bear - 19) (Cougar - ?) (Turkey -5)
2009 General Harvest = (Deer - 136) ( Elk - 89) ( Bear - ?) (Cougar - ?) (Turkey -4)
Oklahoma rd and South Prairie road all have great access There are numerous access points just south of the ice caves. Huckleberry mountain holds some elk. Lots of huckleberries means lots of bears and turkeys. There are good populations of deer in here, fairly open underbrush. Lots of hunters in this unit during the early season.

Your "general direction" has already been specified, by you! The WIND RIVER GMU! It's not a large unit. And as I said, there probably aren't a lot of people that know that unit. And besides, as has already been said, it's HUNTING SEASON right now! People who hunt are actually out HUNTING or SCOUTING on the weekends. You posted on a Sunday morning and are now pissed off because your post was up not even 12 hours and nobody told you where in the Wind River to hunt! Have to agree with all comments so far, can't come in here the first couple of posts and ask for help. Kind of a slap in the face for most of us. Hunting areas are sacred pieces of ground that we have discovered over the years. Almost the same thing as me meeting you for the first time shaking your hand and asking if I can borrow your rig to drive around.
Like said there are a lot of people in here with a lot of knowledge, you just have to get to know them.

I have been reading, researching, mapping, google earthing, scouting on foot, glassing etc for two months. Just thought I might get a "in 20XX we saw some promising sign around monte cristo range" or "last time I hunted there we heard of game south of little huckleberry moutain".
If I find any activity I will certainly post info and pics here... I understand some may post right now and never return. I guess all I can ask is for a little faith. If not then, my mistake.
First off, welcome.
Second, take a pill and chill out a bit.
It is ok to be frustrated, but passive - aggressive comments won't get you much info.
As stated before, you can't expect a lot of repies right now and you were already given a "general direction". You state that you don't want honey holes, but by your post it is obvious that you want "exact directions" to an area that has sign. Take the info you have and apply that to your two months of research and see what you come up with.
You mentioned that you camped and spent a lot of time in the woods. Some stories and photos would go a long way to warming up the membership. You also mentioned that your not going to be much help. I disagree. Tips on hiking, camping, backpacking, cooking, fishing, etc are always welcomed.

Be warned, (as anyone also in East Klick too), the weather in there can change in an instant. The hunter that is not prepared for the worst could find himself in a pickle real quick. Wind storms to ice or torential rains. I've seen all of that in a six day span. 80 degrees one day and three days later frozen roads.

here's my reply ....north of Carson all the way to 90 is pretty good, lots of people in the Wind and low deer numbers.
what more do you want? from snow melt to hunting season I spend every available weekend that I can in the mountains, I do this to be ready for that day when it comes, I dont do this to bennifit you, I do it for me and my family and friends, nobody is going to put you in an area they have scouted so you can shoot the deer they have been watching all summer, and lesson their chances at harvesting an animal.
After you hunted last year and decided you didn't like the area you should have been preparing for this years hunt in the summer as I have done and others on this great site have done all summer long.

I have learned SO much from this site, but just hanging back and reading posts. Surf the site, chances are your questions have already been asked and covered! There is allot of info on here, and pissing off the members who share info because you didn't get as detailed of a response as you wanted is the wrong way to establish yourself. The guys and gals on here are passionate about hunting and preserving our ability to pass hunting on to our kids as well as bringing new people into the hunting community.
It's 6 days before hunting season, people are already jacked up. It may take a while and a few more posts before you get people willing to share more detailed information with you (especially now).
If you want tips, wait until AFTER hunting season, and read the stories and pics that are posted. Then buy a map, go scout and instead of asking for info, make a post like "I went out scouting in this GMU and saw this type of sign and this is what I am thinking, am I off base?". You will get allot more info asking about what you should be looking for 2 months BEFORE hunting season, than 6 days before.

Brand new guy to the board and what are you expecting? Some honey hole? Put in some time, pay your dues, get out in the woods and find a spot. Maybe not a lot of people who read your post know of the wind river unit. Maybe they put in a lot of time and don't want to just give away their info they worked so hard to find out.
Already bashing the board and members with a handful of posts just because nobody is bending over backwards for your needy attitude? :'(

Actually, if you have spent time on the site you would have known better than expect a ton of help with little to no other posts. You would have known that it often takes time to get that one member who has the info you seek to finally see your miserable thread. Plus, if you had any clue, you would have realized how incredibly busy most of the modern rifle guys are right now so close to the opener.
Lastly, if you had been actually paying attention previsouly on the site, you would have noticed the value in it, the good people who make it happen, and you would have been more patient. Instead, you come off as some whiny teenager who wants attention. Congratulations!

Just last month I said exactly where I killed this buck on here. You just need to pay attention. :) In fact I sent a fellow member to a spot where I saw a 30 incher THIS YEAR. He now knows within a 100 feet or so where that buck was. I am looking forward to seeing his field photo with it. When done, I think we'll go catch some fish. He has a fly I want to try That won't happen to everyone as I don't see that many. :)Man I bet you wish you had that guys knees :chuckle:

I dont hunt the Wind River Unit, I just came back to the west-side after 20 years chasing Elk in the Manastash.
I also Archery Hunt (Traditional), won't go back to the "pumpkin patch" until drawn for multi, I enjoy it too much.
