Title: Bore Sighting
Post by: Wayne1 on October 11, 2010, 08:09:56 PM: Generally how close does bore sighting get to sighting in at 100 yd's, before you do the finale sighting in ?

Post by: bobcat on October 11, 2010, 08:15:23 PM: I agree it's still best to start at 25, but I'd bet in most cases you'll be on paper at 100 yards after bore sighting. Course that does depend on the size of that paper doesn't it? But really, if you can, just take one shot at 25 to confirm it before moving out to 100.

Oh yeah,, like the guys said,,start shooting at 25 yards, then go out from there.

If you read my question...I have no idea how you thought I was looking for a short cut?.. The main reason for the post was, Do I need to aim at the broadside of the barn , or is a standard target fine.

Once you have your rifle sighted in you write down the grid coodinates that way if you bump the scope, want to check it or change the bullet weight you can dial it back in.

Post by: FALFire on October 12, 2010, 06:13:19 AM: For bore sighting, are you using a bore sight tool or just the old fashioned way of aligning the bore and scope onto a target? Either way you should start at 15 to 25 yards, that should get you onto a 24x24 inch piece of paper, make adjustments as needed. Then move out to 50 yards and check it, then go out to 100, then 200 yards for you final adjustments. Hope that helps :hello:

Either method, start at 25 yards you will be surprised how far off it can be even at 25 yards. I agree with FALFire. I have had it where I was adjusted at 25yds and no where on paper at 100yds. Make sure to do 50 yds then make more adjustments as needed, before moving out to 100yds.

My gun was 1/2 in left at 25 yrds. 8 clicks right and I was shooting connecting holes 1/8 in rt of bull center and 1" high at 100 yrds.
i can live with that.

I was told dead on at 25 yrds, gives you close to dead on at 200 yrds, due to the rise( 25yrds) and fall (200yrds) of the bullet trajectory , using a 150 gr 30-06.

False, dead on at 25 yards is dead on at 100 yards and low at 200, how much depends upon what cartridge you are using. However, what seems like dead on at 25 yards may not be as good as you thought when you shoot at 100 but it should still be within a couple inches.

Ok, you got me on that one but assuming you have a 1.5-2" sight height you will be very close at 100 if dead on at 25 yards.

For some reason 35 yards sticks in my head as the range I'd want to zero my rifle if I didn't have a 100 yard range to shoot at. I normally sight in 2 1/2 inches high at 100 yards.

Actually it is closer to 250 yds. The bullet crosses line of sight at 25 and then again at around 250. My dad told me a long time ago that was a method he was taught in the army.

I was way off...lol dead on at 25 is more like 4 inches high at 100..

Post by: Grizzly95 on October 12, 2010, 05:24:25 PM: I use the Hornady Ballistics calculator, if you are reloading it is fairly accurate. I use it to see where I want to zero, then shoot other yardage and see how close it really is.
