Title: Early muzzle bucks - 2010 off to a good start
Post by: DeerThug on October 11, 2010, 10:20:20 PM
Well finally getting a few minutes to relax.  Spent the most of the last three weeks hunting, cleaning up from hunting - and getting ready to go hunting.  First was early muzzle for deer. Then muzzle elk and now moose.

So far the carcass count is three mulies and a cow elk for me and my son.

I got a dink of a 3 point and a second tag doe, but Matthew shot a pig of a mulie.

Here is the story.  We had spent the first morning taking care of my meat.  Then we got to looking for Matthew's buck.  He is quite picky and it most often pays off.  We had seen a bachelor group of 3 monster bucks scouting.  We decided to go check out the spot and after the third time by I spotted one side of a 4 point rack up on a bench under a large cliff.  through the spotting scope he was wide and heavy.  After a while there was a tall 3x4 with him.  We set up a plan - the bucks could only go one way on the cliff.  Matthew went up a chute on the left of the bucks.  I went way to the right and started a push.  Well was I wrong these things went to the right where I did not even thing a goat could go.  The first of a blown set up.

The second blown stalk was just a laughable event so I won't waste the typing - and he was not much of a buck.

We suffered through the heat all through the second day with no success.  It was stinking hot!

We hit all of the usual spots on the morning of the third day.  We saw a spike buck and that was it.  We hit all of our glassing spots and could not find anything.  We went to the last spot and that would be a hunt.  I gave it plenty of time.  Finally I saw a rack behind a boulder.  We have seen bucks by this boulder before and this dude was hid good.  The spotting scope showed a nice 3x4.  The buck was nervous and got up.  We set a plan.  If the buck wanted to go to the left Mattthew was to run to the next slide to the left and climb to the top by the cliffs and wait for the buck to get there.  If he was faster than the deer it might work.

The buck did just that and Matthew took off.  I stayed there and the buck did not take his eyes off of me.  I glassed the slide and saw matthew making his climb.  I gave him 5 minutes to get settled and started up to the buck.  Just as we planned the buck went to the left at a brisk walk.  He disappeared out of my sight.  Minutes went by and no shot.  I thought - great our last chance.  Then boom.  I made my way over the shale and he was sitting up on the slide under this big pinnacle rock.  I looked up and he waved me up.  I got up there to see him sitting by this great muzzle mulie.  It took 4 hours to pack him to the truck and get him on ice.  Another lesson to stick it out till the last minute.

Check out the body size of this buck.  Oh and I left out the part about the rattelsnakes - ___--
