Title: "Different" calibers
Post by: Skillet on October 14, 2010, 12:00:51 PM
Highcountry's .375 H&H thread got me to thinking about guns we don't absolutely HAVE to HAVE, but really want for some reason or another.  Most are either trick guns in common calibers, or vice versa - this thread is about the "different calibers" people want.

I'll start -

Ruger 1-S in 9.3 x 74R with open sights.

So, what do you want, but don't need?

x2 on the sharps 45-120 i have always liked them and don't need one but i think it would be really cool to own one. the other is a new shot gun i LOVE my bps pump best shotgun i have ever shot or owned. I am Really lookin at a sx3 i think they are pretty slick. i have never hunted waterfowl with a semi. i have a antique browning i use for upland from time to time. I am more then quick enough with a pump :chuckle: but have been thinking about that gun for awhile. :chuckle:

Oh, I NEED the guns.  Nobody said "don't need".  But do I REALLY NEED that 9.3?  Nah...
So, if you don't already have all of the guns ever made, which oddball caliber do you want next?

I really dig the big-bore lever guns, too... that 45-70 marlin is nice.    dam tough call.

I would really like to have a walking varminter, like a .222 or a .220 swift. My bull barreled 22-250 isn't fun to pack. I really want a Browning BLR in .308, don't need it, but I want one.

Just not ready to drop the $3000 for a good one.

I want/need a SS Marlin 444.

I need a Roddy Toyota built Caspian 1911 or an Ed Masaki built Colt series 70, 1911 in 45acp capable of 1" groups (5 inch barrel) at 50yds. (No, it's not an unpopular caliber, but an extremely accurate 1911.)

I need a Clark built Colt Gold Cup National Match 1911 modified for 38spl capable of 1" groups (5 inch barrel) at 50yds. (Quite unpopular cartridge for a semi auto.)

I would like to build something in 358 Norma.

I'll say a 9.3mm anything is pretty high on my list. Next up would be a 505 Gibbs.

I might actually cave in and get the Gibbs before the 9.3.

well I saw several mentioned that really appeal to me, I would love a blr in any caliber, I also think the 25-06 is cool as hell and WAY under appreciated, marlin lever guns are high amongst my want but dont need group particularly a guide gun in 45-70 or a 1894 in .357mag. But the end all gun that I am currently jonesing for is way out there in terms of main stream thinking....I really want to build a contender carbine in 30-30 a.i. w/ a 23" barrel I figure I can get about 2500 fps w/ a 150 grain bullet. I can shoot CHEAP factory ammo, or handload premium bullets for big game. w/ a leupold VXI 2x7 i guess it would wiegh in around 6 lbs. this to my way of thinking would be a great little rifle for bummin around in the woods in the fall, litle enough to not be a burden but w/ enough thump to cleanly take a bear or to back someone up on a deer. Ive given this considerable thought and just may sell my encore to fund this cuurent bout of craziness.

A 375 Ruger is on my short list.  Besides...  if you get any Ruger Hawkeye rifle by the end of the year, you get a spiffy Carhartt coat.  Who doesn't need a new coat?  I really love the 375 H&H, but my choices are limited unless I want to get another one built.  Love the 1895 Marlin, had one in 45/70 that was customized to the hilt.  It along with a bunch of others had to be sold a few years ago to help pay my sister's medical bills (leukemia, no health ins).  I WILL have another 45/70 in the future.  Some form of varmint gun is on the short short list.  I'm ready to order it, just need to decide on the caliber.  It will be the Remington SPS LH heavy barrel model.  Now it's time to stir the "which scope" pot.

I'd like to get a .257 Weatherby again.

I'd love to hear the benefits or the "why's" you guys want some of these off the wall calibers.

45/70 is just a classic, and I can't imagine a better round for relatively close shots in timber, whether the target is deer, elk, or bear. Not sure the 45/70 is an "off the wall" cartridge though.

Nostalgic English double barrel rifle, like the ones PH's used in Africa after the turn of the century, 470 Nitro Express or similar.  Problem is I don't have an extra $30K.

i have to add one more. one of the few guns i have always wanted, but have not bought yet. a good old double for a Africa hunt i really like the 458 Lott cal but would probably go with a 460. the reason i want this gun? knock down factor when black death is 10 yards away, with the look of hate in his eyes  can you tell i dream of Africa :chuckle:

I have 3 of those 7x57 Mausers.  1 fully sporterized and 1 half done and one bone stock.  I love that cartridge.  :IBCOOL:

Now what I really want is A  B.O.H.I.C.A.  arms 50 BMG upper to go on an ar15 lower.  I know its only single shot, but that would be one really cool "black rifle"

These are definitely on my short list, too.  In fact, I have not one, but TWO Model 70 Featherweights in 30-06.  One I bought whent the "Classics" came out in the mid-90's, and one is a 1957 model left to me by G-pa.  The newer one might get the "338-06" treatment.

Along with Carpsniper, Caretaker and others, I have a hankering for an old cartridge used in Africa back in the day.  Long, rimmed catridges made for double guns make me .  :dunno:
I want the 9.3 x 74R because it has the above drool factor, and is something I can see myself toting out into the elk woods every year.  And I LOVE me some Ruger No. 1 without a scope.  I was looking at bullets on Midway for the 9.3 (.366 cal) and found many that have the round nose with a not-horrible B.C.; and a wide range of weights.  Brass is available as well.  Good elk/deer medicine in a No. 1 w/ iron sights.

Also would love to have an early Model 70 in both 375 H&H and 458 Win.  Just because.

Jackelope - here is my reasoning for my selections

.458 lott - for my dangerous game africa trip one day
.50 bmg and fn5.7 - for fun and i just might stockpile some illegal ammo for an end of the world situation
6.5x.284 for long range target shooting, possibly hunting.  I'll do more research to see what is out there prior to a purchase though.

I'd love to have a 375H&H, also would love to have a Marlin guide gun in 45-70 with a few tricks added from wild west guns.  Need to rework my 6.5x55 mauser carbine to make it a little more handy as well.
