Opening day my hunting partner and I are packing out back to the truck with a limit each (all brown, mostly teal). About halfway back my young lab takes off into the woods (he likes to take detours, the little sh*t). When he returns he’s got big greenhead in his mouth. Now what, between the 3 of us we have 15 ducks and dog doesn’t have a license?
-
Throw the green head back were it came from,,and keep your dog under control..

if you dont want to ruin the dog praise him for the duck then chastise yourself for letting him run off ;) leashes people they work wonders they come in leather nylon cotton and even electronic :)
-
That's a hard one. Not the dogs fault just doing what he supposed to do. I would leave the green head with out the dog knowing.
-
Kill the bird and toss it.
-
you didn't have an option for "praise the dog and leave the mallard behind".

:yeah:
Praise the dog.......and buy him a license for next time.
-
the part that kinda sucks is if a a gamie sees this before you leave the mallard you are over your limit so I would work on leash control when you're not in the blind. No offense, but off leash dogs are a pet peeve of mine in most scenarios (duck hunting and upland of course are typically different).

:chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: that's funny!!!!

That's why I voted to throw the teal and keep the mallard. You're already over your limit, as soon as the dog brought the mallard to you. You might as well keep the bigger duck! And I sure wouldn't blame the dog. The dog is doing what he's supposed to do.

ethically, and possibly legally speaking, you didn't kill the mallard, it's not your responsibility. It would be nice to not waste the meat if you could legally take it, but you can't. Throwing that teal back would be wasted game though as you DID kill it and then chose to toss it. that I wouldn't do.
-
Maybe you DID kill the mallard but didn't know it. It would have been a duck you shot at and thought you missed. Or, it would have just been in the flock with other ducks that you did knock down, and this one got a stray pellet and didn't drop immediately. Either way, if the mallard was recently killed, the game warden is not going to believe you when you tell him your dog just found it laying out there.
-
first off the dog is doing his job.. GOOD BOY!
legally speaking get rid of it. even if you call a gamey first and explain, they won't be understanding.
ethically speaking its a tough one. you didn't kill the duck so technically its death isn't your fault. some would say not to waste the meat some would say the hawks and possums will put the meat to good use.
what would I do?... I would tuck a teal in my pocket, keep the mallard and make a bigger batch of duck teriyaki. the law and whats right doesn't always meet in the middle and you know as well as I do that most game laws are in place to keep people honest. keeping one duck over your limit that your dog found isn't a big sin in my book... however if you shot one duck over your limit purposefully, then I would be all for a public flogging. the shame is the game dept doesn't have a portable polygraph so if caught; your guilty with little chance of being proven innocent.

something like this? where A is ethics and B is law?
so keep and eat mallard is on the "A" side and having to throw away the duck for waste is on the "B" side? but only having a limit to go home with lands in the middle. both ethical and legal, hehe.

LOL so I did learn something in my ethics class!

makes perfect sense to me.. plus it looks like a drawing of boobs so you can't go wrong there can you?

I would say if you keep the mallard and leave on teal, you are wasting less meat! :chuckle:

Definitely cannot scold the dog.. need more choices in the poll. :)

OK, I added a couple more choices.
-
can't be mad at you dog for doing somthing its trained to do. if the dog was kept close and did not wonder around to find the bird you would of just had your limts.
-
Praise the duck and leave the dog behind.
-
If at all possible try not to waste the duck. Teal are small ducks
-
I teach my dog to eat ducks on command just for cases like this.
What I would do is have my dog carry the teal (smaller meal) to the truck. If I see a warden up ahead I simply give the command "COPS" and my dog will swallow the bird.
Easy as that :P

You guys haven't been hunting very much public land lately. My dog usually has found half a limit by the time we get to our spot we want to hunt. I don't hunt much on public land for that reason.
-
The game warden would probably let you keep it given the situation and they wouldn't want you to waste it. Legally he would also have to site you $150. I guess you can do the math. I watched guys sail birds all morning on opening day and not be able to find them. That's why it pays to have a good dog, so you don't loose those cripples.
-
buy the dog a license
-
are u kidding me?......load the gun and go help him find more....I lOVE swattin cripples...and hey you might even get a band or better a eastside harli......
serioulsy man what kinda question is that?
-
Never like to see any bird wasted. If it's a cripple, especially. May not be "the law", but if it were me, I'd go in to the woods, breast out the bird, put the meat in my bag, and leave. I just don't think it's right to let something suffer/get wasted, and, for what cause? Just my $.02.
-
It won't get wasted. The yotes or birds of prey would have it ate up within a few days.
-
leave it for mother nature....or breast it out and feed it to your dog and toss the carcass....
-
I guess its no different than those public hunt spots where you find pintail hen after pintail hen from those that are unable to identify there birds. Those duck hunters didn't seem to have any problem donating them to the predators of the night. :twocents:

thats pretty slick, did you make/edit that yourself?
-
you should keep the bird. In the state of Washington there are wasteage laws that you can be fined or arrested for leaving dead game behind. yes you went over your limit. but its better to do that and maybe get a ticket than know that you killed something that is just going to go to waste now...
-
But in this scenario, he didn't kill the extra bird. And as others have said, nothing goes to waste in nature.
-
where i hunt the bird won't go to waste. As it is now, it's a race already. the moment the bird drips, the Bald Eagles and us race to see who gets to the duck first.
-

I just edited an image I found on the web.
-
Maybe you got your limit in ducks and an extra hen pheasant. :chuckle:
