anybody hunt ducks without decoys? i doubt i'll do any duck hunting this year, but i was just curiouse if anyone hunts without decoys, (mainly east side)

its called jump shooting or pass shooting...

If you are hunting w/o decoys, don't be a jerk and take advantage of another hunter's spread by sitting a few hundred yards away and pass shooting birds that are working that spread. I've seen people do this on several occasions up at Welts. One guy was so blatant about it, we had to get up and run him off when he got within 50 yards of us "hiding" in the tall grass.
Cheers!

lol. I wouldn't do something like that_ plus i'm too into uplaland bird to try duck hunting unless someone with the whole setup would offer to take me along

I love duck hunting as much or more than just about any other activity (almost) on earth. However I really dislike jump shooting. To me, that's not duck hunting at all. Duck hunting to me is about the decoying birds, wings set, landing gear down, belly beak bang!

+1 although a few hundred yards away is acceptable in my book, just so long as your not taking pot shots and sky busting... 70 yards away like the mother F*&^ing @holes i dealt with on saturday is enough to fight about especially if there is a whoooooooollllle bay they can hunt.
back in the day my hunting partners father shot a guys boat after he moved in on our spread and wouldn't leave. " he shouted better get moving before your boat fills up with water!" ... just one example of how pissed off that S*&t makes people .

Biginner, you should be able to come-up with some decoys........ All you need to do is hunt near SnowDog (http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,59355.0.html) and wait for him to leave. :chuckle: :chuckle:

lol

I hunt without decoys and I do just fine,if you find a spot the ducks wanna be in and you hide you wait till they come in but if your hunting somewhere where they need some coaxing then just get a few decoys like 3 or 4.

Grew up very poor and as a kid my brother and I hunted for meat. We had a great area and would kill one or two ducks on the water. Remember meat hunting. We would take the dead ducks or geese and prop the ducks head up with a stick shaped like a "Y" and use it as a decoy. After a while of that type of hunting God blessed us with two decoys we found on the side of the road while walking home. They must have fell out of someone's truck. Those two decoys were our decoy spread for the next four years.
I would not use the above for today or for any sport hunting.

At our duck club when I was a kid, we never had any decoys out. And if we did, it was a few that had been left out for the whole season in the exact same spot. However, we never needed them. All of the flooded barley worked WWWAAAAAAYYY better than any old decoy. Can't say I've never jump-shot, or done some pass-shooting, however, sometimes when you're in the "X", you don't need to do anything more than just show up. As the years have gone by, I've ended up being quite the decoy kind of guy. I really enjoy finding which spread works the best and such. But we all evolve! And, I've killed a lot of ducks and geese that come right in to me over decoys, and over no decoys. It can be done. Good luck to you this season! ;)

Theres nothing wrong with jump shooting or pass shooting. It is just a different style, some people like it and some dont

i used to do a lot of jump shooting when I was a kid. we would belly crawl up to the ponds and put the sneak on the ducks, hand picking which one we "really" wanted first. geese too. we'd run across all of the local fields (farmer permission) and just spend hours walking field to field jumping ducks. But for me things have changed and jump shooting ducks doesn't have it's appeal to me. I just really enjoy watching them work the decoys. that's my favorite part I think.

It's like spotting and stalking a deer, whats wrong with it?
I found one spot last year pheasant hunting where I jumped a bunch of Teal, tripled on them then sat and waited. Sure enough they all trickled back in and I had my 7 GW teal in about 30 minutes.

nothing wrong with it at all, it's just not my cup o tea. like I mentioned, I just think the decoying is the best part of the game.

I enjoy a good jump shoot with the dog just as much as a good decoy shoot. It mixes up the week alittle.

Classifieds on this site has some decoy' 4 sale :)

x2 i like calling ducks and geese but prefer jump shooting :IBCOOL:

I have put out large and small spreads at different places throughout the country and this year due to the fact that modern rifle deer was open I only had two dekes not in storage a drake mallard and a teal decoy. Within ten minutes I got two birds waited a half hour at my little hidey hole and went home to spend the rest of the day with the family. Sometimes too little is just right.

getting back to that first post, there are lots of places to jump shoot on that east side, especially down the i90 corridor. You got all of the lakes, potholes, etc right there. But additionally, you don't have to spend $2k on decoys. You can get the job done initially for $50-100 while you're deciding if you like it.

I have only done Jump shooting and I dont think that I could stand sitting and waiting for them to come to me.
-
I'd say at least my first ten hunts were all jumpshooting/pass shooting outings. I'm on the west side so idk if all jumpshoots go the same, but I was able to get a couple of birds every time i went out, and on average only spent about 1.5 to 2 hours in the field, plus you dont have to carry around all your gear, dekes, blind bag etc, just an easy in and out.
ps make sure to get permission to hunt if the land is not marked as public
