Title: Tri tronics collar broken... How to diagnose?
Post by: Special T on October 18, 2010, 09:23:23 PM
So i inherited a tri-tronics sport 50 G2. I guess its about 7 yrs old. I've been using it, with much success, to work my Chessie "Chief" since i got him back from Long Hollow Retrievers training camp. Well I went to test it on my self this morning before i put it on Chief(as i always do) and it didn't work...The light for the charger said it was ok, and the collar blinked the green light like it always does when its on.... The Charger didn't give off the blinking red lite bad battery indicator. The sender red light blinked when i hit the button. I even tried it at max pwr 5 setting and nothing..

Do i need to try anything else to see if something replaceable is broken? It has a screw in antenna, and normal battery...
I did a quick search online for repair and its like 100 bucks... So unless its like an antenna / battery that are $25 ea i'm thinking i might need to just buck up and get a new one...  So that got me thinking. the new Sport Basic G3 is expandable for more than one collar.... And all the collar components should cross over as a back up right?  I have this question posed to Gun Dog Supply. I might be buying it from them.

Has anyone ever run into this kind of problem/issue? Thanks for any help..
BTW i'll be hunting in the salt and the E-Wa freezing temps.  :twocents:

I'd try to replace batteries in the transmitter. Might have enough juice for the light. Is that one that you can change the battery? Check all your connections. If you can change the connectors, back them out and make sure the threads aren't corroded at all. Make sure the threads on the anteanna aren't corroded. That's all I can think of.

Oh here's another thing. is that a multiple collar transmitter? This one got me the other day. I was trying to use my collar the other day and wondered why the dog wasn't responding. I had the collar selector switch on the wrong setting.

Hope you figure it out w/out all the other costs.

I sent this letter to Gun Dog Supply and got this reply.

I have a Sport 50 G2 serial # 515110002307 and it just quit working. I looked at having it repaired but for the cost i might as well just buy a new one... So my question is if my collar is ok, and its the Signal sender broken, will the SP B G3 be able to expand to use MY collar? So i can handle 2 dogs at once.... Would my charger and other parts be able to "Back up" my new collar if i bought a new one?
Thankyou for your time

Thanks for contacting Gun Dog Supply.  Your collar will work with the
Sport Basic Transmitter or as a second dog collar if you got a system.

So i bought the new sport G3 tritronics for 2 reasons... i think the collar is still good and the G3 can expand to 3 dogs... who knows i might get a bitch for my dog.....  I have to have one for this weekend and the cost difference between having it fixed and a new one is like 115  bucks.... Glad i got it it has a vibrate/noise maker so you can train the dog that a noise= last chance to comply before the shock.... He made a short retrieve on a 1st year rooster today as well as as double retrieve on 2 ducks. a teal and scaup at the same time! I'm a tightwad and hate to spend $$$ but glad i bucked up and got it for this weekend!
