I went out on an afternoon hunt this afternoon, after some ordeal with being in the shooting path of another shooter and watching all the birds go to the other guy I was invited to head over and finish off the hunt with him to make it more fun and safer for the both of us, the first group of pinnys that came through I droped a pinny hen and when i got it to the blind.........IT HAD A BAND ON IT!!!!!!!!!!!!,
this is the first band ive ever gotten!!!!!!!! im sooooo hella stoked right now, and I must say, thank you very much to "boom city" for inviting me to come over and hunt with him and making it possible for me to get this band!.

Congrats on the band, but why were you gunning for a hen Pintail?
-
What’s wrong with gunning a hen pintail, they’re tasty.
-
If it flies it dies... :yike:
Nice band..Call in the numbers.
-
Nice job shooting a banded duck is pretty cool. I shot one my first year duck hunting my buddies where all mad because it doesn't happen that attention and it was my first year
-
Nice job on the band. And hell. You even knew what you were shooting at. :hunt2: VERY NICE!!!
-
OK curiosity got the best of me :rolleyes:Whats the deal with the bands :dunno:
-
They band birds to track them. Not alot of birds are banded, so they are rare for some species and more common for others.
The band has a number that will lead you to the place banded and age of the bird.
My only band was from a mallard drake, banded in Canada, and was 9 yrs old.
My son's snow goose was banded in canada and 3 yrs old.
Never seen a pintail with a band.
Congrats.

Congrats DucksDoom and thank you Fish for the info :hello: I thought i might be missing some new type of lottery drawing :chuckle:

It could be a lottery, some bands have a dollar amount on them you can get if you call it in. I guess they're trying to get more people to call the band's in by offering cash. :dunno:
-
sweet congrats. i have only ever got one myself.
-
Congrats on the band

Bird banding is a universal and indispensable technique for studying the movement, survival and behavior of birds. The North American Bird Banding Program is jointly administered by the United States Department of the Interior and the Canadian Wildlife Service . Their respective banding offices have similar functions and policies and use the same bands, reporting forms and data formats. Joint coordination of the program dates back to 1923.
Banders are a select group. There are currently only 2000 Master banding permits and 3000 subpermits in the United States. Master Banders include federal and state agencies, university researchers, bird observatories, and private individuals. Waterfowl are banded only by federal and state agencies. Private individuals are not normally allowed to band waterfowl as the banding information is used to set harvest regulations.
They band a lot of birds across the U.S. and Canada yearly. I read one report that stated over 1 million birds were banded per year. Depending on banding locations, flyways etc., determins how many bands individuals get. They can be very common in some places and not so common in others. .
-
Not a bird hunter, but I know those bands are the $hit. Congrats
-
I would say that is a first year male, not a female...Nothing wrong if it was a hen...You might have a delay in reporting as many bio's have yet to submit their data...
-
yep...look at the bill man, it's blue....not a hen ;)
-
some hens still have blue on thier bill, just not as much usually.
-
If the information has been entered into the system and you enter it via the computer it will let you know if it is a drake or hen. Time to start guessing guys? You have a 50/50 chance of getting it right. :chuckle:
-
there was nothing avalable on the spot when i reported it online, I have to wait tell they send me the card in the mail :chuckle: start voting now.....hahahaha
-
check this out, how early in life do you think it got banned? :P

it was banded 35 miles southeast of nulato, yukon-koyukuk census area, alaska on august 13 of this year
it was banded 2 months and 6 days before I shot it :dunno: did not give him very much time to get educated did i? :chuckle:
-
cool stuff. good travels ;)
-
Now you can have it mounted with the band or throw it on your lanyard. The last several banded birds I shot that were good quality I had left the bands on and had them mounted.
-
im gonna mount it with the band on it, mainly cuz its my first band.
-
Very cool....and congrats!
