checking to see if anyone here loads for 270 winchester and uses IMR 4831, if so what are you running for charge. loading 130 accubonds and would like to get about 3000fps. appreciate any thoughts and advice. have loaded for the 7mm and the 06 (25 and 30) as well as 300 wm but just getting set up for 270 win. also just worked up some loads for 30-30 using imr 3031 at 30 gr. w/sierra 150 pro hunters, any idea what velocity would be with that one?
-
it takes about 58 grains to get the 270 win to 3k with imr 4831.......at least in my 3.
-
We're shooting 130gr Berger VLD bullets with 56gr of H4831 and they trap at about 3012fps (average of 10 shots). I'm not sure what the comparison of H4831 and IMR 4831 is. :dunno:
-
H and IMR are definitely different... If I were you, Id switch to H4831 SC...easier to handle with a charger... it will work great...
-
thinking i will switch to h 4831 sc.. can i get my 3000 fps with this powder without compressing the charge?
-
I have been loading the 270 win for 20 years and every load I throw for my rifles is finished on a scale, so metering is of little value to me. if you already have the imr, give it 57 grains and see what happens. of the 3 I own 2 love 58grs one loves 57.5. all are right at 3k through the lights.
-
I use H4831 but IMR should work just as well. They're actually both made by the same company now (Hodgdon.) I use 58 grains with 150 grain bullets and get 2900 fps. So I am positive you can easily reach 3000 fps with 130 grain bullets. Also another comment since you said you have IMR 3031 on hand. I have a pound of that which I really had no use for. So I loaded up some 270's with it just for fun. Using 130 grain Hornady's and 46 grains of the 3031, they shoot great, and with about half the recoil of my other loads. And from the book I think they're somewhere between 2700 and 2800 feet per second. So still a great deer load and easy on your shoulder.
-
I Think I will give it a try, just a little unused to such a full case with a load. does it matter that I am loading accubonds? (cause I have them) nosler list the max at 55 gr. which does not seem like nearly the speed I am looking for.
-
i also use h4831 in my 270 win and 270 wsm. the imr is made by the same company like bobcat said. its a great lineup of powders. i have always had great luck with it. 150 grain bullet with 57 grains of h4831 in my 270 win works for that gun.

I didn't feel a thing when the gun went off with a buck in the scope. :chuckle:
-
Well at least you didn't end up with a scope cut!!
-
You know, its funny you say that. I actually remember taking the time to make sure I had a full view through the scope and no shading around the edges. Any will change the impact point of the bullet.

The 270win and IMR-4831 is like peas & carrots! Great combo! Look in the Nosler book and work up a load. Any and all in the book should be very accurate. I use RL-19 in my 270win. The burn rates are similar between RL-19 & IMR 4831. I use 55 gr of RL-19with a 140 Accubond and get 3000fps consistently. I too measure every load in the scale before it goes into a case. I even scoop the powder out of the jug and put it on the scale with a old spoon. Takes a little longer, but I know what is in every round, and they are all the same.
-
I have put up some good speeds with the re powders, but I have found them to be much more tempermental then imr or hodgdon.
-
looks like I am on the right track, thanks for all the info. anybody having any luck with the ct bullets for loading , got some balistic silvertips price was right. what is every ones favorite bullets for the old 270.?
-
I have settled on the speer hot cor. it is 13 bux for 100, I have taken all varieties of game and the performance has been perfect. the beauty of the 270 win is that every bullet made was designed for its velocity window. it dies not require the latest greatest bullet.......step up to the 270 wby and it is pretty easy to overdrive a speer or similar and have less then great performance on close shots. I have tanke stuff from litterally 10 feet to farther then you will believe all with good results. I have loaded the berger, tsx and fail safe also, but none gave me the accuracy of the speer, so that is where I stay. if you get any bullet to shoot sub moa constantly, go with it and fill up you freezer.
-
Nosler Accubond, 140gr!
-
i shoot 150 grain nosler partitions with i believe 51 grains of H4350. worked beautifully on my deer last year and my bear this year. i have no idea what the velocity is on it, but its real accurate in my gun.

I use 53 grains of IMR 4831 with a 150 grain Nosler Partition and large rifle primers. It is a pretty mild load, with velocity around 2700 fps (estimated) and it gives about 1 MOA in my Remington 700 Mountain LSS.
-
i shoot 55 grns of H-4831 and 150 grn berger vdl bullets out of my 270 win and its a tack driver ill try to find a pic of my groups i have with it.
-
Just loaded IMR 4831 54,55,56 grains 150 gr Nosler lR accubonds. My rifle has a long throat and shot 150 gr partitions with 55 grains for 25 years. It will be interesting what the chronograph says.

I have used 57.0 grains of IMR-4831 with 130,s since 1982. This load is from nosler load manual no. 1. I never got less than 3,000 fps with this load using a variety of different bullets. All from a 22 inch barrel. Acually I have used IMR-4831 with 140,s and 150,s as well. Could not be happier with IMR4831. It flat works for me. In case any one wonders did I use a chrony back in 1982. The answer is yes I did. Looking at some of my old data I noticed running the 150 sierra game king at 2990 with 56 grains of IMR4831. 150 PT,s run 2950 with the same charge. 3100 with 130,s is doable as long as a fellow starts low and works up. :) :) :) :)

IMR 4831 has worked for me and the family for years . My .270 loves IMR 4831 . I could careless if my .270 ever shoots over 3000 fps .. I care more about accuracy ..Some guys want speed and some guys want to dot eyes .If you can have both then more power to you ...I prefer the 140 gr and will never go back to a 130 ..Just has worked much better for me ..Made that change about 35 yrs ago and never looked back :chuckle: just my :twocents:

Ive shot a bunch of .5 or better 3 shot groups with 140 BT,s and AB,s using IMR-4831. Never had an accuracy issue with this powder. Not long ago I managed to shoot three 150LRAB,s dang near thru the same hole using 55 gr. of IMR-4831.

Prepped a bunch of WIN Brass last night. only culled 12 cases from the original 100!!!
Sized them, trimmed back to min case length, de-burred the primer pockets. Weighed them...WOW...was really suprised with the results. Sorted them at 187 grains +- 1 grain...

And with no barrel lengths it's phenomenal data :chuckle:

When you say you culled 12 cases, what cases were they factory brass reloads or new win brass?were they cracked?
Reason That I ask is I have been having quite a few crack on me lately,Factory brass then reloaded.
-
These were new factory brass. I culled them because they were either too heavy or too lite.
-
Oh Ok, yes I have found that also. The cracked neck I have found often lately from Win. thanks
-
sounds like some annealing is needed.

Well yep the barrel length is part of the rocket science . I have 22 inch barrels on both of my rifles. I can knock down 3100 with with IMR4831 and 130,s . I usually like 3050 to 3065 for hunting. I have loaded for and tested some of my handloads in a friends vanguard with a 24 inch barrel. It is easier to get top notch velocity in the 24. The 24 is sweet. Not sure I would want to pack around the longer barrel though.
-
I loaded 270 with 4831 for years and switched to reloader 19 a few years back and I don't think I'll be going back anytime soon. My rifle seems to like the reloader a little better.
