I pulled a couple of cams out of the woods last week and with the exception of a few does the most interesting thing was my ugly mug setting 'em up and taking them down. Well I happen to be flipping through them this afternoon and I saw something I didn't notice before. I assumed it was a dog, from where I have no idea, until I noticed that blunt tail.
Your thoughts?
-
Looks like a golden retriever to me. :dunno: After a second look.. cougar maybe?
MS
-
Looks more like a dog to me.. :dunno:
-
woof woof
-
Looks like a dog, how far from the nearest house?
-
its ears look like somethin off a cat, i'll go with cougar
-
I noticed that too, it appears to have round ears.. Kitty, Kitty... :dunno:
-
I too noticed the rounded ears, and if you look the back legs are far to muscular to be that of a dog I think...
-
plus most dog's tails come to a point at the end, the animal in the pic has a rounded tail like a cat
-
1st thought was a yellow lab.... then the rounded tip of the tail makes me think cat....
-
i think i saw a puddy tat!
-
now you guys have me going back and forth...lol
-
man, tough one! first said DOG for sure, now maybe.....hmmm let me look again.
-
If it helps at all whatever he is he's at the mineral lick I set in front of the camera.
-
:chuckle: Well, I thought for sure a reddish golden retriever like the dog I have. Then looked again and I don't know, but looks more like a cat now.
-
dog wagging its tail,it makes it look funny and stumpy
-
Well so far we seem to be at a tie (by my oh so rough and not oh so accurate math) between man's best friend and something I'd like to have in my crosshairs.
-
Its a dog. Look at it's ass. It has that long bleached out hair.
-
Looks like a cougar to me. zoom in on it.
-
I don't know but if I had to bet money I'd guess cougar.
-
sure looks like a coug to me. the tail and the ears = cat to me.
-
Cougar for sure, tail rounded, too muscular or dog. Look close, there is no brown or black spots on it, all cougar brown.
-
No black tip on the tail either. I would bet a dollar to a dog turd it is a dog.
-
100% dog cause the fluffy tail...
If you want to see it bad enough, I imagine your brain could make a cat out of it.
:twocents:
-
doggy, no doubt. Got a cougar life mount in my living room, not even close....doggy.
-
Compared to my golden, the tail and all, I would say cat. Plus the ears look catty.
-
I vote Cougar.
-
COUGAR...Here kitty kitty!!
-
rounded tail white inside of the legs rounded ears cougar for sure
-
Ear looks to have a little tuft of white fur... I say cougar.
-
After looking at the first pic I was cougar all the way and thought the guys voting dog were foolish, but after looking at the blow up it looks like a dog wagging his tail with black ears. Dog for sure. Mike
-
I think it's a dog. The tail is thick at the end with no black tip, but the base is pretty thin. weird observation...I looked at some google pictures and you can't see the 'pucker hole' on any cougars, their tail seems to cover it up :dunno:
-
Cougar
Are there any other pictures of the animal coming or going?
-
Sorry, but after a two week soak that's the only one of this mystery beast.

-
Coug!!! I think! :bash:

D-O-G :twocents:

Dogs vs. Cougs same old story. I live on the east side so therefore I believe its a coug.

That's just going to depend on how "furred up" it is.
-
Interesting. Hardly ever see a cougar carry it's tail that high. Unless maybe it was docked. Sometimes the older cats will start chewing at the end of there tail. Not sure why exactly. Maybe loss of circulation over time. It has the colors of a Cougar. The black towards the head looks like it could be the color of a cougars ear. I also see some white on that black.
I am leaning towards cougar.
-
cougar :twocents:
-
DOG!!!!!
Seriously how do you get cougar from that picture? :bash:
-
Anatomical there is no way it could be a cougar. Cats do not have a "rump" because they have 5 or 6 muscles that control the movement of the back leg. Dogs have 3 or 4, and that is why they appear to have a "rump". This dog clearly has a rump as well as a busy tail, and the definite long hairs on the legs. :twocents:
DOG all the way!

Except for the fact that he used the words "clearly". If that is what you think you are seeing great. However, saying you see definate long hairs on the legs, and clearly see a rump, isn't really an accurate statement since the picture isn't clear at all. :dunno:
I still lean on the side of cougar, but Michelle's explanation on the high and shorter tail and your arguement for a "busy" tail is better proof of a dog than telling me it has a rump and long leg hairs.
I would still like to hear how close to houses or farms this photo was taken. There are only a couple of dogs that I can think of that would have that coloring, tail length, and that length of hair, and to my eye, it just doesn't match up with any of those breeds. :twocents:
-
BTW, I just don't see the rounded ears others are claiming since it's head is behind sapling.
-
how close to a house, that is the determining factor, if he is 3 hours from the closest house, i dought its a dog, but 5 min ya prob. now you also have to look at if there is a lot of traffic of people that may bring there dog. it looks like it could be a bad pic of a coug, or just a weird pic of a dog, its hard to say cause its a ass shot of the animal. and well rounded tail looks like cat and the round ears but dogs do not all look the same. the tail also has a curve to it that i don't see in dogs to often.
leaning toward coug, leave the camera out there some more then will tend to be in the area again and looking for that mineral lick
-
Okay everyone this was taken in one of the clear cuts in the tree farm almost up to the spur 10 gate.
-
dogs can have blunt tails for whatever reasons, but that tail is definatley a cat tail through my eyes also the round ears which is a possibility of a dog also but...with those two items combined i am sure its a cougar but thats my opinion
