Title: How many have seen wolves deer hunting?
Post by: meathunter on October 24, 2010, 02:17:05 PM
(GMU 335) So opening morning typical drill up at 3:45 am with my 14 yr old son make lunches and hit the beginning of the ridge at 4:45 so we can be sitting on a rock that i like to sit on by 7:30. 150 yards from where we want to be see 5 does in the the draw off to the right. Not quite light enough for the bino's, so i bust those out of my pack and jack a shell in the chamber. Start moving again and jump 2 more does (I'm thinking it's going to be a good day). Finally reach the rock i want to be on look up in the draw see 3 more does, so we watch them for awhile and then all of the sudden the hill side explodes with deer there must have been 10 other deer that we hadn't seen yet on the hill side and as the last doe runs thru the draw 20 yards behind it was a big wolf. It had to be 80-100lbs at least, it almost looked white and then over the top of the ridge comes 3 more diffrent color redish grayish and a little bit smaller :bash: , so they where working those deer, but as the day went on i sat and pondered about my son and seeing these wolves. He's 14 and maybe a buck 20 and he will be soloing some of these canyons and draws on his own in the next year or so. I've been hunting this area since 1984 and not afraid of anything in the woods, but what if my son was by himself and these things where hungry?  >:( Now it was opening morning and i already had an itchy trigger finger, but being the sportsman that i am i could have easily taken 3 out of the 4, but i had my son with me. Now I'm not sure, but when wolves are in the area the woods go dead not some much as a Raven was flying after that the rest of the day. If i hunt this area next year i will be taking matters into my own hands if i see those wolves again. I would also like to mention that my other hunting partner the next day hunted a canyon 5 miles down the road and he saw 2 more wolves and one of them sat and howled in the middle of the draw he was watching, so I'm not sure how many they have released there. I do have pics I'll post them if i can figure out how to zoom in and crop.

4 in Republic.  They were killing a whitie doe along the San Poil.  I have found plenty of wolf tracks in the snow heading into my honey hole.  I haven't seen any sign of them for the past couple of seasons though.  I bet that they have moved West.  They tend not to stay in the same spot.

who in the hell would release wolves there wtf, cant have your camp more than 14 days or they [forest service] will take it,wolves population increaseing, poachers, tribal hunting, you cant shoot cougars  or wolves in 335 . than you have hairloss infection. sounds like the deer dont have a chance, dont forget habitat loss ,mismanagement by the forest service, and game department. then you  have  other so called hunters shooting other hunters ,or at night cause they dont know how too hunt.

Not sure if this will work ... First time posting a picture. This is the one i have, my brother has a few more. Top of the ridge... *censored*! I will be practicing the S.S.S. You know I've been reading Wolfbaits post on here for about year and a half and never in a million years would i have to worry about the deer heard in the area i hunt. It makes me feel like the WDFW doesn't want people to hunt, so by releasing wolves they would rather diminish the heard that way then letting us as hunters take them. I mean muledeer herds have been in bad shape for along time why would releasing wolves help? Something just doesn't pass the sniff test. I think our WDFW is all run by greenies or something.

From that picture the posture and shape really screams wolf. I thought I heard some this summer towards ingalls pass, but never saw any evidence. Talked to some elk hunters that claim they saw wolves around the saint hellens area this year. Again just hear say, no evidence.

It just sucks. I'm kinda torn cause I am a sportsman to the bone and am definitely anti-poaching of any kind, but i can't say i won't take care of the next one I see. I just want the deer heard there to flourish and to be protected. I love seeing deer and deer hunting I mean I love animals just as much as the next guy. For most of us it's a family tradition that goes back generation as it has in my family. Those deer have so many things working against them already it sadden me.

The pics and story should be reported to the WDFW even if you think they won't do anything about it. It's one simple step we have to take to work towards delisting. It's also not the 1st time someone on here has spoke of wolves there.

Spent several days in the area between Colville & Chewelah looking for WT.  Last two years we have hundreds of deer and this year it was a total bust.  Spent a lot of time talking to other hunters and locals and Wolf word kept coming up.  Spoke with a taxidermist from the area and he said this has been the worst ever for deer coming into his shop.

We pounded the mtn's on horses and boots a min of10 - 12 miles a day and saw little if no sign that the deer have even been in that area.  Saw plenty of moose sign.

What a strange experience.  Anybody else hunt the area this year?  What was your experience?

Wolves are up around metaline falls and le cler creek.
But the winter kill has been ruff on the deer up north the past few years
so just add wolves and we get no deer

Looks like one hell of a big coyote to me with a fresh winter coat :P  Why SSS, I say SS, why waste time to get caught shoveling, just shoot and shut up.  Instead you did not shoot and definitely did not shut up; I don't blame you, is it worth the risk, probably.  Sounds like we get to have at her in Idaho.  Even with the non-enforcement we will never see the end of them without poison and trapping.  Too bad the old timers had to work so hard to eradicate them only to have the greenies bring them back.

Wasn't there a thread about wolves in the Jack Creek area too?  I don't know how often they howl, but me and my brother heard the wolves and saw tracks in the Twisp River area about 5 years ago and they are no doubt unmistakable...it would seem that the wolves in the Teanaway have no chance of avoiding encounters like this based on different user groups frequenting the area, it is no where near as remote.  Were they howling during the chase?  Some relatives of ours saw wolves in the same area we heard howling and they were very vocal during the chase.

Well i'm not sure how many are up there, like i said my hunting partner had seen 2 the next day and one of them sat in the middle of the draw he was watching and howled for an hour. I would think that they can have 2 litters a year, times that by maybe 4 to 6 pups. That's alot of wolves.

We saw one big black wolf on tues last week in the north east corner... We called some of the land owners around that area to let them know and come to find out an old lady has been breeding hybrids on her land for the past ten years... She just reciently passed away and rumor has it someone turned all the wolves loose... nobody knows how many are running around now but i can tell you this guy was not afraid of much.. He squared off with the tundra for 5 min or so and didnt seem to give a crap we were there...

I hunted up high in the 335 opening weekend and at first light had 2 howl in front of us across the canyon and 1 answer up behind us on the ridge. Saw 1 doe all day! My uncle saw one of the wolves the next day. It had all four of its legs white with the rest of its body a charcoal grey. The state really needs to figure this out before it gets out of control!

Saw 2 up in Douglas county, wouldn't have believed it but 3 of us were together and verified them. Deer #'s were way down this year up there. Talking to local hunters and buisiness owners, they belive they are having a cougar problem, which could be. But we sat and watched these 2 wolves putting a stalk on a mulie doe, they were coming from 2 seperate directions and they were friggin' big!

Jason Smith: The Wolves  http://wolfclash.com/2010/10/23/jason-smith-the-wolves/ (http://wolfclash.com/2010/10/23/jason-smith-the-wolves/)

by Jason Smith

It was the third day of our hunting trip with Birch Creek Outfitters.

Terry Robinson, Josh Collins and myself, were in the Selway with Don Charlson, our hunting guide, hunting Bull Elk. We walked from our camp down ‘The Spur Trail’ heading for some meadows and ‘The Rock’.

We left Terry at the first set of clearings and meadows to watch for elk, deer and bear (our hunt was a combination hunt, allowing us to get any one of these animals). Don, Josh and I continued down the canyon to the next open slide and meadows. Josh stayed here to hunt this area while Don and I continued onto ‘The Rock’. About 200 yards further down the trail, Don and I came up on some bear tracks that seemed to be heading to ‘The Rock’.

We assumed this bear was heading to ‘The Rock’ after the remains of the previous kill (two days prior to us hunting this zone, the other hunters in our group had killed a black bear off ‘The Rock’). We moved very slowly down the trail looking for movement and listening very carefully. We crossed several small streams and at one point saw a small brown animal (maybe a beaver or mink).

The bear was a secondary objective.

We were hunting bull elk and in doing so had shot out several cow elk calls along the trail. We continued down the trail to ‘The Lower Rock’ about 200-300’ below the main lookout. We looked around this clearing for about 10 min. and then moved into the trees.

To get up on ‘The Rock’ we climbed the hill side toward the back side of ‘The Rock’. There is a small meadow back there, then a group of thick trees and bushes to pass through on the way out to the lookout/cliff edge at ‘The Rock’. As we stepped out to the edge and began scoping the area for elk, we called out a few more cow calls, hoping to excite a bull into the open.

After seeing no real movement, we started to relax and get settled for a few hours of waiting and watching. We set down our packs, drained our bladders and tried to get comfortable (I set a Way Point on my GPS for the 3rd day of hunting at about this time – 10:45am). We both found a nice spot along the cliff edge to view the area.

About 15-20 minutes after settling down, Don shot out another cow call. Nothing was moving… Don took off his boots to relax his feet a bit and to set up his GPS. I went up to a log (about 15ft away, near the bushes) where I had left my pack, to get a sandwich, and return to the cliff edge to continue to look for movement.

This next part happened very quickly, within 5 minutes:

Don was watching the hill side just to the right of ‘The Rock’ and suddenly sat up and pointed out a wolf. This wolf was about 50 yards away.

He was big, real big… I was amazed at how big he was.

I always thought of wolves being just slightly larger than a German Sheppard. But this wolf was more like a Great Perinese (probably 3 ½ feet tall at the shoulders). He was black with some brown stripes on his side. He was sneaking into the tree line when we noticed him and then was gone.

Don and I were on high alert, watching to see if we could see where he went. A couple of minutes later we heard a wolf ‘whooping’ and ‘yipping’. At first I was not sure what it was, I had never heard wolves in the wild like that. Then we saw the next wolf (slightly smaller, but still bigger than I thought they were). This wolf was much closer, about 50 feet from us.

We were shocked, how did we not see it?

It moved in so quiet… But it was way too close for comfort. The wind was blowing up over the cliff from behind us and into the wolves. They knew at that point we were people and not a cow elk.

Don was on his feet, with his pistol out. I was up and had my rifle up in ready mode and looking through the scope to find the wolf. Don said we had to get out of there.

We heard something big in the bushes behind us, then several sounds in different locations in those same bushes. They were cutting off our escape route! We had nowhere to go but off the cliff (about 100-200 feet straight down).

Don turned and aimed high and left of the wolf and in rapid fire, shot out 12-15 rounds from is 9mm.

Within the first 2-3 shots, 3 other wolves stood up! We did not even see them.

They were all within that same distance of about 40-50 feet. But the gun shots did not scare them. They just headed into the trees, curving toward us as they came. I was scared and decided to let loose a round from my gun, thinking it was much louder; a bigger caliber gun would make them run. I shot about 2 feet behind the last wolf (BOOM). And he did not even flinch… He walked up to a rock and stood his front legs on it, staring at me.

An image I can’t get out of my head.

He was all black with his pink tongue hanging out, just staring at me like I was his target. I jacked in another round and pulled up on him again. The cross hairs of my scope on his head and not much else in the viewing area (I thought, wow, he is way to close). “Don, I can take him out! Can I shoot him?” I said.

Don quickly responded “No, don’t shoot him”, and then the wolf walked into the bushes, following the others. Don slipped his boots on and told me to grab my stuff and that we had to get out of there, NOW!

I was scared to go up by the bushes and get my pack, the wolves were right there, we could hear them. With both of us ready to shoot we ran up and got my pack and jacket.

At some point here I remember seeing Don’s hands shaking and I knew he was as scared as I was.

I remember shoving my gloves and GPS into the pack and then we headed down the right side of ‘The Rock’. It was steep and I was thinking “don’t slip… they are still coming…”. We hurried down the hill to the trail out of there.

We had gone about 100 yards down the trail (almost running) before we stopped for a breath. We whispered back and forth about how unbelievable it was to have them that close. About then I heard something moving on the hill above us about 30 yards away. Don did not hear it but we started moving again anyway.

About 75 yards further down the trail we heard the ‘Yipping’ again, just up on the hill about the same distance I had heard it before.

They were following us, hunting us!

Don made me go first down the trail thinking if they attack, it will be from behind and he wanted to make sure I was safe. When we got to the first stream we saw that there were wolf tracks on top of our foot prints in the mud from earlier that morning.

The wolves had followed us in, and now, were chasing us out!

We continued to move quickly up the trail. At the next stream we saw prints again, following us in and now they were going the other way as well. They were behind us, beside us on the hill and now we knew they were in front of us as well! PANIC!!!

We moved up the trail as if we were moving through a war zone jungle, both of us ready do battle at any point, safeties off, guns loaded and fingers on the trigger.

Josh had the other 2-way radio, so I radioed ahead to let him know we were being hunted and that there were wolves all around us and between him and us. I told him to be on high alert and be ready when we got there. We were heading back to camp, now!

After picking up Josh and heading to get Terry we heard them again, behind us and still too close for comfort. As we approached the meadow where Terry was we did not see him in the tree line where we had left him. Instead he was standing on a set of large rocks in the middle of the meadow.

He explained that he had fallen asleep along the tree line and had been woken up by the sound of wolves. The yipping and howling was close enough to wake him from a dead sleep.

With his back against a tree, he had seen a large black wolf run through the trees (about 75 yards away) toward ‘The Rock’ and heard several others moving around him. He decided it would be better to put some distance between him and the tree line in case they got any closer.

We talked for a few minutes and put times together. Things did not match up, the wolves he saw were there at the same time Don and I were shooting on the ‘The Rock’.

We had two groups of wolves in this same valley with us!

We started moving toward camp again. About 200 yards out of that meadow, we heard them howling and yipping no more than 75 yards away. They were still chasing us!!!

We made it back to camp in record time. We did not see them again but could hear them howling, yipping, and barking, for the rest of the night.

About 4:30am the next morning they all lit up and howled, barked and whooped together for about 30 seconds (which seems like an eternity when this is happening, in the dark, in the back country) and then they were gone.

Some hind-sight thoughts:

The wolves moved in very quickly and very quietly. Unbelievably quiet, the only thing we really heard was a few whoops and yips from the Alpha wolf up on the hill. It was like Morse-Code and he just lined them up in a way that was most effective for a kill.

I am sure they thought they had a cow elk pinned against that cliff and they were going to eat. By the time we saw them, the Alpha wolf already had them worked up into a feeding frenzy. They were going to kill something and did not care what it was. Even after they could smell us and knew that we were people and not an animal.

That is down-right scary to me, being a born and raised Idahoan. I have spent most of my life in the Idaho wilderness, hunting and fishing in the Stanley and Challis areas.

This event has opened my eyes to the VERY REAL DANGER that the Northern Grey Wolf presents to the people of Idaho.

I no longer feel comfortable going into the wilderness unarmed. Seeing first-hand how quickly the wolves moved in on a ‘cow elk’ amazed me. This should be the elk rut and the bulls and cows should all be “talking” right now.

We used an elk bugle several times during the week long hunt and did not receive a single response. I believe that the elk have learned that by making any noise they put not only their own lives in danger, but the rest of the animals in the valley in danger from these predators.

We did not see any Mule Deer or any Whitetail Deer the entire week. What is happening in our precious wilderness areas?

We must gain control of this so called endangered species.

Feel free to contact me to discuss this wolf encounter.

Last year while hunting area 15 in ID, we were doing one of our usual hunts when we began running into multiple sets of wolf tracks in the snow.  Every time we found any deer sign there would be fresher wolf tracks on top of it.  On our way hiking out we noticed something very large and black in the road in front of us.  At first I thought it was a bear but upon further inspection it was a wolf.  Once it noticed us it slowly walked up the hill then stopped and just looked at us for several min at about 80 yds.  Eventually it turned and headed into the timber.  We walked up to where it was in the road and found that the tracks were following ours up the road.  As we continued back towards the truck we found where 2 other sets of tracks split off the road in opposite directions.  I dont know for sure but it sure seems like they may have been hunting us.  I have to say at this point I was a little creeped out and looked over my shoulder a few times :yike:for the rest of the hike.  Never saw the other two wolves but I have to assume once the relized what the were tracking the went on thier way.  Im going back over there in 2 weeks and you better believe I will be on the lookout.

Agreed BIGINNER, My question is how does one find out if they where released in the area? Or will they just say its part of some other pack?

Unfortunately you saying you saw wolves is not the type of proof that WDFW will use to confirm wolves in the area.  I don't mean that as an insult.  You need to give your information to WDFW and probably to the person I linked to earlier so that there can be confirmation.

As said before there has been reports of wolves in the Teanaway for years.

I'll probably think twice before taking another mid morning nap while hunting in the Methow!

If anything is putting myself and my hunting partners endanger I am going to do everything I can to protect us. If that means having to shoot a wolf so be it. I don't care if its not legal or politically correct, my own safety or the safety of my loved ones isn't more important than a damn wolf being able to eat more deer and elk calves and being able to breed.

saw one in the alladin unit almost 10 years ago. it was night time and we were coming back from taking showers in town (weekly event whether we need it or not) and it crossed the road in front of the truck and continued up the hill. it paused about 30-40 yds up and we got a pretty good look. like someone already mentioned, i was absolutely shocked at how big they are. before seeing one, i felt like i might mistake them for coyote but NO WAY. i was with two other guys and we instantly knew what we were looking at.
