Title: .308 youth rifles
Post by: Dadbear on October 24, 2010, 09:29:47 PM: It's time for my soon to be 10 year old to get his own deer rifle. Any thoughts on the .308 youth models out there? I've heard great things about the Savage Accutrigger. My son has one in .22 rimfire and loves it. Which ones are made in USA? Thanks for any suggestions.

If you don't handload,I wouldn't go with a .308. The recoil in the youth rifles is pretty snappy. I watched a poor 10-11 year old kid at the range a couple years back that was shooting a .308 in one of the Handi-rifles. I felt sorry for the little guy,that .308 was kicking his azz.

My 9 year old shoots a Remington youth ADL in .243,he and his 7 year old cousin wanted to shot every last round I had for it last year.

I almost bought him a Weatherby youth model. It was cool because you get two stocks with the Weatherby. A shorter youth stock and then a full sized one as well.

I couldn't pass up the deal on the Remington though. On clearance at Wal-mart.

Post by: HUNT on October 25, 2010, 03:49:20 PM: Agreed. the 308 has too much pop for the little ones. I had one when I was 12 years old. Made me recoil shy for years to come. I started each of my boys out with my Remington Model 7 in .243. Not too much recoil and very accurate. I would hold off on the .308 for a few years.

I'd get a 7mm-08 not a .308. I bought my daughters a youth 77 in 260 that I was so impressed with i bought 2 260's for myself and the 260 is very very colse to a 7mm-08. they shot that little rifle quite a lot and enjoyed it but remember those itty bitty short barrels are LOUD. I'd give your boy plugs and muffs or the sound alone makes them jump. Anyways I think the 7mm-08 is really hard to beat.

Post by: bobcat on October 25, 2010, 08:27:02 PM: Recoil is the reason you'd WANT the 308 over the 7/08, if you don't handload. Because "Managed Recoil" loads are available for the 308 but NOT for the 7/08.
