Did anyone have any luck in Winthrop this year? In 30 years of hunting there, this was by far the worst for me. I only saw one 2pt and 9 doe's in five days.

I was hunting outside of Twisp. Saw a few more deer than you....but by FAR it was the WORST I had seen in the 24 years I had been hunting there! Dismal was the word that kept popping up! I had not hunted an opening weekend in quite sometime and expected to be hearing a lot of shots.......nothing within miles on Saturday AND Sunday!

Its lean guys. I haven't been making this crap up. We'll have to see what the photo season brings me

What was the weather like? I'm sure there was alot of people over there. There should have been some shooting. Sorry to hear you guys didn't do that well. I am hoping it will be better for the quality permits. I hope I am not going to regret passing on all the bucks in regular season.

You'll do fine. Late season muzzel right. (Alta). Should give me your coordinates as I will be there sometime between Nevada, and the gym

we were there opening weekend and didnt hear alot of shooting and not many bucks hanging. game warden told my uncle that the amount of deer camps this year was also down quit a bit from last year.

I know that on opening moring that one popular creek had 50+ people out hunting :chuckle:
There wernt alot of bucks taken.. numbers just arent there but there were some HUGE ones that got had.

Opening morning we saw 15-20 bucks (only 2 or 3 shootable, but on private land) most of them while we were driving to where we had decided to hunt that morning. Then by the afternoon all of the deer had hit the next count. Dont think we saw another buck before we left that week.
On opening morning we were driving behind a guy on a publicly maintained rd that stoped in the middle of the rd (right at shooting hrs) used his hood for a bench rest and shot accross the road. Love legal hunters!!! :bash:

We were in the "Winthrop area". We had 5 guns. Camp finally broke last night (10/24) with the last die hard giving this hunt up. Everyone saw deer. Multiple immature bucks were seen. A member of our group even found a large fork in one area and a doe in another shot and left for dead. Game Enforcement was called and they took the buck with them to dig out the bullet I would guess. A member of our crew had actually seen that buck on the hoof opening morning and saw he was not legal. Anyways with 5 guns in the woods we only managed one small Whitey buck. Had to get in the thick stuff just to get him. Here's the buck. A young one, but definitely better than tag soup...

Went up to harts pass in middle of week, was 56 degrees at ranger cabin, warmest i have seen for that time of year. There was a 30in taped by game dept, at check station in Winthrop.A few were taken on driveway butte but there were a lot of horse hunters chasing up there. I also heard elk were spotted up the cedar creek area.

Here's my archery Winthrop area deer. Not many deer and lots of road hunters.

Does anyone know the person that shot the 30" buck that they measured? My neighbors up there said they missed a deer opening morning that had to be close to 30" in the same area as where the 1 was shot. I'd like to see a picture of it.

I hiked in 2 miles and stayed two nights out in the hills of Mazama. Opening day, I passed on a 3x with eye guards....I thought I would see bigger ones...no luck. He was the only shooter I saw during the season. We had a nice 4X just above the freeway by the property hanging out...making fun of us...
I saw more mountain goats most days, than I did deer.
My dad has a late tag for November, so I hope it is better for him. It was pretty rough...that weather I think was a killer. One in our camp got a doe with the bow, for the 2nd deer tag.
I still had a great time. ;)

I saw 2 young bucks, spike and fork hanging out together, early in the season. Friday I hiked up and jumped a good looking buck, never got a count but he was tall and thick. Never connected with one, the weather was killer.
Camps in my area seemed way down from previous years. I saw one small 3 point taken in my area. A friend of mine took a good sized bear, but never saw a legal buck.

Two bucks taken in my nephew's camp of 8 or 9 rifle toters in the Winthrop area. I know of a whitetail taken down low. In a different spot, my son took a doe. A young girl in a camp across the road took a doe. I know of three other local bucks and a couple suspected early migrators taken in the Methow area. (StrutNrut1984) I hit some higher country late week and found that at least a couple of the ones I'd scouted in late summer were still there. (Yes... I should have targeted them from the git-go) (No, I did not get one of them. That's OK, I know where they'll be next year). I checked out a new spot and found fresh buck sign and I highly suspect they are still on that slope. There was a wave of migration of younger animals, some younger local bucks for the first couple days. Then NOTHING was moving as the weather got warmer, the moon full, the sky full of stars for four nights in a row. This weather system will bring some more down, but not the majority. I still saw doe's at 5,000' on Sunday morning. Opening morning my son and I were very close to a couple two points.. They stunk to high heaven. Ruttin bad. I was within nasal distance of a couple spikes mid week and they were not even curious of the doe's that were near. (or my doe in heat perfume) A couple bigger bucks taken near me were not suspected locals at all but may have been starting to rut.

Hunt the Winthrop area, hike in about 5 miles. This year was the best we have ever had in our camp, and the deer numbers were up for us. I had some slow days, but some good ones. We saw alot of little bucks, which we have not been seeing in the past few years. I missed a three point, and saw two big bucks, that I didn't have enough time to count points and get off a shot. Camp ended up with a 3x2, and two nice four points. We had a great season.
