Seems all is normal in terms of timing for blacktails over here.  Saw a couple does and a yearling without a buck, but got a nice photo sequence of a small buck nosing a doe past a camera last Friday.

When we got home from Idaho last night there was a small 3 point  in my field that was really rutty.  Straight neck and running one doe around.  She was not ready, but he was.

I think there is a song that goes something like that...

The Buck I missed opening day. After we had shot at him 4 times, he chased a doe over the hill with his nose to the ground, and right on her butt. I got it on video even!!! :o

I'm hoping that it'll hold off, wife's muley tag is for Nov 1-20th :o

Did see a small buck chasing a doe on the opener, ran 10 yards from me, and knew I was there, and didn't care!  The doe had a look on her face like, please, just shoot him, get him off of me!

All the bucks killed in are camp smelled of the rut.  Too bad season isn't a few days longer.

This is all classic pre-rut behavior, commonly called the "chase phase". Peak breeding is still off a ways and is often noted by a sudden decrease in buck sightings.  This is because they have a doe locked down in an out-of-the-way spot until she will let him breed her.  Following the peak breeding phase, comes the trolling phase where bucks will set out to scent check doe bedding areas and trail systems in search of more receptive does.
