Title: your opinion?
Post by: vfilbert on October 25, 2010, 10:24:31 PM
seeing all these found dead wasted deer posts is making me sick, its crazy thiers people like that out thier, question for all you, lets say your on a hunt and you come across a dead deer lets say a legal 3 point, you havent seen anyone all morning and no gun shots, the deer is starteng to get stiff but is still slightly warm, the deer is most likely still edible, and your a ethical hunter who cares for these animals, if it becomes obvious that the deers shooter has lost it or given up, WOULD YOU TAG IT?

Well WDFW says deer found dead should be reported and not for consumption... so I'd go off of that and whos to say someone isn't still looking for it.

It depends, but I would definitely think about tagging a deer that I found dead. I guess it would depend on if I was ready to end my hunt at that time or not. If I was a long ways from home and had a week long hunt ahead of me I might have a hard time giving that up.

That is a good question. I know I would tag a wounded deer.

I know a guy who showed up right after a motorist hit a decent size deer. right after the cops showed up, he asked if he could take it. He said to the officer that he had a tag for one. The officer told him "what deer?" and told him that sometimes it is donated anyway.   :IBCOOL: He said it was the best tasting deer he has ever had.

He said it was a fresh road kill.  Sounds like it was within a few minutes if a cop was there.

Nothing wrong with road kill deer.  Depending on how bad it was hit and holw long it has been there.  I am not about to pick up a deer if I can"t tell how long it has been there.

First off it is LEGAL in the state of GA to pick up road kill!

When I was living in GA while at college I came up on an accident with a nice 8 point buck (talking GA standards for counting)  It actually had run into the side of some girls Ford Ranger passanger side door and ended his own life.  Not a mark on him.  With the help of a bystander I loaded him up in the back seat of my step moms VW Bug.  On the hoof I estimated him at roughly 235 lbs.  That is a lot of meat to waste.

I hit a 165lbs spike going 60mph on a back road.  I hit the deer and slammed on the breaks and the deer kept tumbling (1/2 flying) down the HWY.  Called the cops to come right a report.  Lady cop helped me load the deer up in the back of the truck.  that deer was tore up pretty bad but I still saved 75% of the meat.

Yeah, it was fresh fresh. I kinda remember him saying they showed up right after the driver called the cops.

I don't know how I managed to screw the posting. But I meant to add that I had some and it was good. Considering ive never had deer before. He did say it was gruesome though. Antlers thrown about in pieces. Head shot, iirc.

A fresh kill that some hunter lost or did not track down? Animal that has not had rigor and the meat would be as good as a deer I shot and took an hour to find, yes I would tag it. I would feel really bad to let it go to waste...
