Title: Advice needed on shotgun slugs
Post by: CMG on October 27, 2010, 02:30:47 PM
OK - I have never used slugs before, just need a little confirmation on what I have researched so far. I am Using a 12G. mossberg pump. I have used this gun for birds only.
I have located a nice blacktail in a restricted GMU, (No centerfire)

- Accuracy?
seems to be zeroed out at 75-100 Yrds for most loads (Depending on the manufacturer) True?

- any preferences on what type of slug? What has worked best for you?

- This is appears to be a larger bodied blacktail, I would guess around 160-180Lbs. Am I going to have any problems dropping him at 75-100 Yrds?

what kind of barrel do u have on it?

i would use hornady sst's if you have a rifled barrel if you dont i would seriously considering purchasin one. they help with accuracy and penetration alot

Go get a few varieties of rifled slugs, try them out for accuracy and get a feel for drop at 75-100 yards then go put one in the boiler room of that deer!

No problem dropping a deer at 100 yards or even farther with a 12 gauge slug. But the problem will be hitting a deer beyond about 75 yards if you don't have some sort of sight or a scope on the shotgun. With just a front bead even 50 yards will be a long shot. But 75 will be doable.

Thanks for the advice guys,

FC/Rock - This would be a one time thing as I 99.9% of the time use my 300 WTHBY, and time is of the essence, so I unfortunately don't have the time to buy a rifled barrel or test loads. Typically wouldn't even think about hunting this area, but I have an opportunity on a once in a lifetime blackie..... Let's just say DBL drop tynes are involved.

Bobcat - Thanks, I will try to get within that range as I have only the front bead!

Well I would take at least a couple of shots to find out where your POI will be or you could just use buckshot, if you can get to 50 yards or less buckshot will work fine.

Definately going to take a few practice shots to get a feel for the range in as much as I can. The area will only allow me to get a clean shot within 75-100 Yrds anyway, dense area with only a few openings. Several things have to go my way for a clean shot, but I can't get him without trying!
