The nile is a huge area and has lots of elk.  I have hunted it a lot over the years.  There are a lot of people, but most don't get far off the road.  If the weather comes it can be a great place to hunt.  If the weather doesn't come...better off staying home.

It will be a zoo for sure. The nile is a small unit compared to many other units that are open. The roads are pretty much every where so no matter how hard you try you will end up running into another road if you try to distance your self from others. There are better units to hunt, but that being said I will probably hunt in a time or two during late season. There will be plenty of elk and a few deer to chase around.

Is clover springs the main rd through that area
Title: Re: questions bout the nile

Yes,  1600 road (?) its private property on both sides of it from Nile Creek for about the 1st 4-5 miles..  then it becomes public property after that... THe blue gates are private and the brown gate marks the beginning of the public area.  Problem is with so many roads,  unless you get up around Clover SPrings (providing the weather allows it) you cannot get far from any roads... the lower section up through Lindsey camp is crawling with people.

I don't get it.....There are a ton of places to get away from people.  All you have to do is get out of your truck. I have an approx 5 mile hike / loop I do and will never see another hunter.  I didn't hunt it last year, but the year before I chased big bucks and elk every day.  If you want to see a zoo go to the clockum right now for modern elk.  Now that's a zoo.  The nile will be nothing like that and even though it is one of the smaller gmu's it is still very larg and can accomidate a lot of hunters.  Good Luck.

I also don't see that many hunters up in the hills. Lots of trucks at the restaurant / bar and along the hwy but not to many actually out in the hills has been my experience. I am hunting in the western part of the unit though. Good luck to all, chase them back over my way. Mike

I've never hunted near the feed station.  The nile can be a really good hunt.  If you want a decent buck (never seen a big one there but I wasn't born and raised there either) you just need to get in any little hiddy hole away from people.  I use to see 5 or 6 legal bucks a day there in the late season.

Always elk there...  trick to shooting them is to just get in an area slightly away from people and slow down.  It is similar to hunting deer back east.  Eventually someone will push one by you.  You just have to be ready.  I always seemed to see a nice bull there also, but that just figures considering I always just has to sit and watch it walk past.

i agree..the nile is very weather dependent. if the snow flies and gets the migratory elk moving it can be excellent hunting. just find yourself a nice spot with some shooting lanes and something should come by you.

I would agree with the rest of these guys just have to get away from the traffic jam up there snow is your best friend, and it looks like its gonna be a snowy year.  I always preferred the rattlesnake up into bethel ridge when it was still open when they closed that it really constricted allot of the people.

I will be hunting the Nile over Thanksgiving weekend.  I might hunt 346 too.  I've killed a few deer out of 346 but never an elk.

I am also going to give it a try Thanksgiving weekend ( heading out Fri am ) , area depends on the snow. I'm going to start at the Bumping end and work my way east as need be. Need to buy some snowtires for the truck, my old ones don't fit. Mike

you can find some decent bucks in there , but if the snow flys , you might wanna hit the south slopes in 346 , Ive seen some good bucks in benton creek late. Elk will be a crap shoot . Good luck , pack lots of turkey sandwiches

What's the snow look like in the nile.....could be a good year.  Make sure you bring chains some of the roads get questionable in the snow.

A couple inches down low last night, I would imagine there is more than a couple inches in the nile though up higher...

I took the daughter up to the Nile on modern season. Man was it weird, the first time i had ever been there during rifle season. I know the area well next to Edgar rock. I thought there would be more hunters than i saw. It seems like archery has more people hunting it, and i mean hunting, not driving down the road.
I checked their primary, and secondary spots, and suprisingly enough, they were split up, but still in their primary spots. Secondary spots hadnt had any fresh sign since early archery.
Like i stated, the rifle hunters dont hit the hills like we do.

Did anyone hit it in the early season, now that its spike only, i bet they didnt get hit hard?????

Hey Instinct, I will be hunting Rimrock on thursday morning and then moving to the Nile Little Nachese area later that day. The reports I have gotten over the weekend were not good and the snow just started  :bash: No animals seen at all  :dunno:

I have an area I will check out, if there is no fresh sign or elk in there then I am gone.

Our group hunts the Nile every year in the late season and we are in animals every year. Like others have said weather plays a large part in the area on were we hunt wether we are up high or down lower but we are always well off the roads.

The last few years it seems like the bucks have been rutting pretty good the first 5-6 days then dropping off so we switch and go after elk for the rest of the season.

I got an update, Naches has about 6 inches of snow. The hills should have quite a bit. It looks like it will be thawing, and refreezing, another rice crispy walk. It dose look like the weekend will bring more in, on the weather station.
Silver cherocar for me, good luck guys!

Just got back from rimrock area from some sledding. Apx 8 to 10in occasional snow, weather not melting snow. No crunch crunch. Looking amazing. Saw more tracks of travel across the roads so they are moving.

Yeah, talked with another reliable source and he aslo metioned lots of movement on the hill tops over the weekend.

They are on the move, now its just catching them before they make it out of the open hunint units, to the closed units  :bash:

First couple hours on Wednesday had 2 5 point bulls within 20 yards. Then a long cold sit over tons of new sign turned me going lower, and on the way, i gave a spike a nice haircut when he jumped the string. Must have broke up 20 in a herd.
Going back tonight, just home for turkey day. Those negative temps are brutal, but rewarding when you see something shootable!

I got all ready to go Thanksgiving, loaded the camper & packed everything . Woke up early Friday with a cold, a nasty one. Was on the couch till Tuesday , still walking around with shaky legs and coughing crap up. Wasted the whole late season. Taking the camper off today will take all my strength, can't even imagine hiking through the snow. Glad to hear all of the stories, I may take a day trip on the west side for deer next week. Good luck if your still hunting. Mike
