Title: lookn for a pup
Post by: 8404DevilDoc on October 29, 2010, 03:36:11 PM
just got the go ahead for a new 4 legged hunting partner, just need some advice and maybe a hook up from a breeder ;) a few pros and cons that will influence which breed  will get...
pro: dog will not be left alone for more then 3 hour intervals in the day, will be used for waterfowl and upland hunting, like the outdoors and will be able to spend hours burning dogs energy...
con: I live in a apt.... :bash:
so my queston is what would make a good breed that can factor what i want it to do all while being able to live in a apt.... any breeders let me know, it also has to be a family dog
thanks

Im a lab guy, remember you are going to buy a dog that will live for 10+ years, do you plan on living in that apt for 10 years? I would say buy a dog thta fits your criteria and move if you have to, thats just my opinion. If you can run the dog every 3-4 hours and can kennel train your dog a lab should do fine. once again I am a lab guy though, Am just starting to do my research on breeder to hopefully buy a new pup this spring. Good luck.

Since you live in an apartment did you check to see if they limit the size of dog you are allowed to have?

Boykins are awesome too. Nice small size, flushing dogs and durable enough for duck hunting in most conditions. I know of a breeder with a top GrandHRC dog. Roomed with him at a dog training seminar for a week. Great dog in the house and in the field. Truely an all around hunting dog. They just became recognized by the AKC. I think it is 100 years of documented pedigrees in breeding or something like that. The dog here in the picture is probably one of the top 10 in the country. He sired a litter this summer. Not sure if anymore around.

Breeding our springer in the spring but other that that we had to travel to northern Idaho to get ours.  I have also heard good things about the Boykins.

Great springer pups, well behaved and mild mannered.  Mine is from the 2008 litter.

This pic was taken in 2008.  He is just under six months old at the time that this was taken during my annual trip to N. Dakota.

Just got a new pup from OakHaven Kennels in Dallas, Oregon and I think He has a couple left.  They are 8 weeks old and their Dad is Downtown Doadie Brown Who has 35 National plates.  They had feathers in their mouths at 4 weeks and at 7  1/2 weeks mine is making 40  foot retrievals already.

I was thinking that but, you can only get one plate per dog, per pass? That would be an old dog!

Eric,

Had a sneaking suspicion I was right. I been allright getting ready for a trip to South Dakota. I see your not cursed and can get some pups on the ground.Everytime I even think about a litter I just end up with a big vet bill.

Ernie,

Have a fun trip. You working? Finally have a day off and am heading out to train with a group up here. Mom was super healthy no problems and pups are doing great. They say no to bank on money from litters because, there can be so many problems. Keep in touch. Spread the word if you know anyone seeking a lab.
Thanks
