i was looking at the garmin astro, and was wondering if they are worth it. do they work good in tall grass? i hate not knowing if he is on point or not.

I have one. It is very accurate in telling you when your dog is on point. Its not always accurate as to where he is on point. I have had it send me in the opposite direction but not always. I only put it on in high brush or sage.

Was looking at the Astro also, but not convinced I need it for a flusher.

Are you calibrating the compass EVERY time you turn it on and set your dog free? If not that is most likely the source of your inaccuracy.Mines been nothing but EXACT and I calibrate the compass always after reading some posts on other boards.I've got a couple big goers which is why I have the thing.My butt doesn't pucker quite so bad when I can see exactly where there at.The biggest they've hit so far is 972 yards,The only downfall is battery life,I also have the old fashioned radio telemetry,those collars are good for emitting a signal for a long time.Last year I pulled out my bag of tricks in august to give it a look through vet supplies wise and found my marshall collar was on and blinking..................from January.

I like mine quite a bit. seems to be accurate and work in all sorts of terrain. I had my dogs in 10-12 foot high corn and it worked just fine.

I don't calibrate every time. I will have to try that. Thanks for the heads up.

Yes AWSOME Garmin Collar, I personal Deaf, I have run hounds for last two years with " new collars ". I have NEVER lost one of my dog. I have hunted by myself in Idaho a lot over two years now. Amazing! Love it and I THANK THOSE COMPANY who made this.

They are kind of like cell phones and computers. I don't how I ever lived without mine. For close ranging retrievers/flushing dogs, its probably not needed. But for big running pointing dogs, they are worth their weight in gold. The new one has a 2 mintue update time which can really extend battery life. I have the DC 30 collar and absolutly love it. My dog doesn't go in the field without the GPS and the e-collar.

Iv had mine for two years now. my English setter has been on point 500 yrds away and i just follow the compas it brings right to him everytime. i never wonder were he is he always comes back to check in exept when on point, if i dident I whould have mise out on a lot more chances. This thing has been great.

I just got back from a pheasant hunt in Pennsylvania. I can honestly say that the hunt may have been a bust without the garmin astro. At least half of the points from my pup were found because of the Astro. When we would lose her, or not see her for length of time, I looked at my GPS and usually it was because she was on point. We were hunting tall grass that was anywhere from 1-3 feet high. At one point, my pup was on point 110 yards away. We walked to where she was and couldn't see her when she was only 6 yards away. She was burried in the tall grass and had a rooster pinned. I would have never found her without the astro.

Those things are awesome. My lab isn't a big runner so I can't justify the cost, but they are really cool.

Remember to Calibrate ....................away from the truck or a fence, every time you turn it on,I guarantee your going to LOVE it.

I'm not taking my setter out in big country again until I get one. Lost him for two days in huge canyons on the John Day River in central OR. a few weeks ago because I didn't have one. Not fun.
