Title: So what would you do???
Post by: jamng on November 02, 2010, 07:46:29 PM
My Buddy told me he had something eatting all his cats food out in the barn. So took my camera over to see what it was and got this...He wants me to trap it and get rid of it for him... Would you do it and if so for how much???

They make a pretty cool pelt....

I've shot a couple in traps.  The head shot ones sprayed, the chest shot one did not.  Don't know if this would happen all the time.  Still stinky to skin, even if no spray.

Have fun.   :chuckle:

One of my buddies told me that they will always spray when shot. Its in a barn with a lot of furnature so letting him spray is not a option. Any idea's... JAMNG

they will almost always spray. best thing is to try to catch the bugger outside, or in a place that its o.k. to be stinky for awhile :chuckle:

I caught one when I was a kid. Skinned it put the pelt in the freezer. Ruined 1/2 side of beef.  :bdid:Parents were not happy.
I would let your friend deal with it. Quit leaving food out, it will go away.

put the trap by the door tie a rope to it when caught hook said rope to truck or wheeler and hall balls may catch him off guard long enough he wont spray in barn

ROFLOL that is one of the funniest things i have heard in a long time :chuckle: so much for your trap after that ride :chuckle: my luck would be, that the trap would snag on a tree or the barn door and tear my 4-wheeler apart :chuckle:

My brother has caught several in his live trap, he says that they didn't spray. He put them in a large black garbage bag and then closed the bag and sprayed ether in the bag and they went to sleep, permanently.

Should work... My buddy traps them live then accidentally puts them in the stock tank to drown.  Works every time.

He can get rid of the skunk without it spraying if he uses a Havahart trap with cat food as bait. After it is caught leave the skunk alone until midday, he"ll be tired and less likely to get pissed and spray.  I trapped 11 skunks in one summer under my parents barn. The only one that sprayed was the first one after I had shot it. Lesson learned on my part. After trapping the first few skunks I found that I didn't need to cover the trap in a garbage bag during transport. I gently set the trap in the back of my truck and let them go a couple miles from the house.

I have trapped lots of them in cage traps without getting sprayed, after you catch it just put an old blanket or tarp slowly over the trap then you can take it anywhere you want it will not spray in there i uassaly drowned them right in the cage put the whole then in a pond or tank whatever i had worked great.

My vote is for the wheeler/trap/haul balls. If you do not do this, film it, and then post it promptly I will be forced to hunt you down and trap you in a closet with two live skunks (one in heat). Please please please do this. It is one of the best ideas I have heard in my entire life.

ps. If you don't I really will hunt you down.

I built a feeder for my cats that the skunks, possums and coons can't get in.  The theory behind it is that the vermin can't jump like a cat.  The cats can jump up into it.  Completely eliminated the vermin problem.  Looks like this (my cam must have gotten nudged):

I catch about 40 every summer.  Wrap the trap in a tarp, BEFORE you set the trap.  Once caught, quietly pick the trap up and carry it out of the barn, put it in your truck and drive to a pond.  When you put the trap in the water lower it slowly into the water at first, you don't want to startle him and then just submerg him.  No spraying no mess.  I have done this to about 100+ skunks and only had problems 3 times, once the homeowners dog had the skunk already riled up when I got there and the other two times, while they were drowning a little oil slick appeared on the water and there was some smell but not too much.  Leave them for a few minutes, I had one back alive and looking all sheepish at me when I got back home, when I didn't leave him under water long enough.  Then use the hemostats clamps on his vents when you get ready to skin him and make sure you don't poke a sac while skinning him and you'll have a very nice clean pelt.

Why not get a live trap and set it up outside and bait it with the same cat food? Seems like simple logic to me.

walk real slow and speak to it in a low tone cover the trap nice and easy.take it away...Or dive right in and get sprayed..put the trap outside with some chicken bones

Don't feed the cats in the barn or remove the food at night.....dah!

Covering the trap AFTER you set it and catch one will get you sprayed about 30-35% of the time.  Cover the trap BEFORE you set it or put the trap up off the ground if you don't want to catch skunks and only want coons.  It is much easier, trust me on this one.   ;)

You can put the trap on a garbage can full of water and tie a long rope from it.  After it's trapped just yank the line and the trap will fall in the water.  Works good.

I would like to say thank you all for your advice...Best was Superhunter333 Best one by far. I would love to pull this off for the whole world to see especially for you h20hunter.  I talked to my wife about it and she told me that dealing with PETA and the animal activists pulling this stunt would put me in jail.  :chuckle:  If you will promise to bail me out of jail and pay all expenses,  I will be happy to pull this off, but I think the more common sense approach would be better.  I plan on trapping the skunk in a trap that is covered by a tarp and hauling it away.  Wish me luck!

P.S. h20hunter if you feel like hunting me down and putting me in a closet with 2 skunks, one in heet, I'm dragging your A-- in with me!  :chuckle:

ok here is how i have heard it done before. Never done it personally.  best bet is to bait the trap outside the barn with the same food it is getting already put a tarp or old blanket or what ever over it beforehand except for the opening, cardboard will work also aslong as you can see what is inside to make sure it is the skunk and not one of the cats.  run an extention from your cars exhaust pipe to the cage then when you are sure the skunk is in the trap start up the car the skunk will fall asleep and die in a very short time I think it would be 5-10min. depending on how sealed the trap is.
