I catch about 40 every summer. Wrap the trap in a tarp, BEFORE you set the trap. Once caught, quietly pick the trap up and carry it out of the barn, put it in your truck and drive to a pond. When you put the trap in the water lower it slowly into the water at first, you don't want to startle him and then just submerg him. No spraying no mess. I have done this to about 100+ skunks and only had problems 3 times, once the homeowners dog had the skunk already riled up when I got there and the other two times, while they were drowning a little oil slick appeared on the water and there was some smell but not too much. Leave them for a few minutes, I had one back alive and looking all sheepish at me when I got back home, when I didn't leave him under water long enough. Then use the hemostats clamps on his vents when you get ready to skin him and make sure you don't poke a sac while skinning him and you'll have a very nice clean pelt.

Why not get a live trap and set it up outside and bait it with the same cat food? Seems like simple logic to me.

Covering the trap AFTER you set it and catch one will get you sprayed about 30-35% of the time. Cover the trap BEFORE you set it or put the trap up off the ground if you don't want to catch skunks and only want coons. It is much easier, trust me on this one.

You can put the trap on a garbage can full of water and tie a long rope from it. After it's trapped just yank the line and the trap will fall in the water. Works good.

I would like to say thank you all for your advice...Best was Superhunter333 Best one by far. I would love to pull this off for the whole world to see especially for you h20hunter. I talked to my wife about it and she told me that dealing with PETA and the animal activists pulling this stunt would put me in jail.
If you will promise to bail me out of jail and pay all expenses, I will be happy to pull this off, but I think the more common sense approach would be better. I plan on trapping the skunk in a trap that is covered by a tarp and hauling it away. Wish me luck!
P.S. h20hunter if you feel like hunting me down and putting me in a closet with 2 skunks, one in heet, I'm dragging your A-- in with me!

ok here is how i have heard it done before. Never done it personally. best bet is to bait the trap outside the barn with the same food it is getting already put a tarp or old blanket or what ever over it beforehand except for the opening, cardboard will work also aslong as you can see what is inside to make sure it is the skunk and not one of the cats. run an extention from your cars exhaust pipe to the cage then when you are sure the skunk is in the trap start up the car the skunk will fall asleep and die in a very short time I think it would be 5-10min. depending on how sealed the trap is.
