Title: Nikon Warranty Experience
Post by: Ray on November 03, 2010, 05:17:27 PM
Last year I severely scratched the eye lens on my Nikon Monarch ATB binoculars which I have had for 3-4 years. I went and bought a backup set of Action EX binoculars at a much lower price (also Nikon). The backup binoculars worked great but were noticably much heavier during long distance hikes (12 or more miles). I was wanting to get my old ATB binoculars back in use. So I read that the Nikon Warranty was for 25 years to original owner and that it only covered manufacturer defects. Well I sent it off to the Nikon factory services in hopes that it would not cost me too much. Nikon said today they are going to replace the scratched eye lens free along with another fix to an area which I did not notice was problematic and ship it back. They didn’t even ask for proof of purchase or anything. Now I have no doubt Leupold has a better warranty but Nikon certainly isn’t shabby either. At least from my perspective. I might be more inclined to purchase more products from them in the future. Although I have several Leupold products that I really like..

Ray, I dropped my bino's and the screw out eye cup was locked in a weird position.  Then Jenna screwed hers up also!   I sent them in and they sent her back a brand new pair and totally fixed mine. I sent a letter telling them what had happened and that I would pay for them to be fixed.   Had both pairs back in 10 days at no cost except shipping.  I was very pleased with them and will definitely buy from them in the future!

Te only time I have had to use Nikon's services was when I dropped my spotting scope and small tripod off the hood of my truck and dented the side of the scope even though it's rubber coated. I sent it to them with a note explaining what happened and a few days after receiving it they called and said they would be sending me a new scope at no charge.Because of that I have since bought 4 monarch scopes and 2 pairs of monarch bino's I broke 1 of the eye cups on 1 of the bino's this year in Wyoming and we'll see how they do this time I have no doubt it will be fixed free of charge.

Great service.
I haven't heard of any failures of these products...even though they're damaged.
Takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

You scratched the lens up, they are fixing it and another issue for free, but you have no doubt Leupold is better? What more do you want?

I didn't ask for more of anything.

Just wondering why Leupold, no doubt, has a better warranty when they fixed everything free of charge, no questions.  :dunno:

Good to hear they took care of you, always like Nikon (mainly their riflescopes).

Leupold has a transferable warranty (between owners) with no questions asked which I believe is committed to well beyond 25 years.

It turned out that they did not or could not repair the lens from my binoculars. Today I received a brand new set of binoculars instead. What a deal.  8) They came with the "No Fault" warranty card.

Easy choice to me.
Glad to hear they took care of you.

Eyecups on my dads Monarchs broke several times withi nthe first year or two, they charged him like $25 or $40 bucks each time he sent them back. They're aware of the problem but that is common but still charged him. Glad to hear of some good stories but for us, we're done with them.

Luepolds of comparable value seem to be more sturdy IMO.

I actually ran over my 8x42 Monarch while they were in the case.  Didn't realize what had happened until later when I thought...hey that looks like a biniocular in the side of the road.  It was...mine!  Really only broke one of the eyecups.  Some tape got it through season.  When I sent it in they said it was not warranty coverage.  I did not expect that as it was completely obvious it wasn't Nikon's doing.  Thay said it would cost a few bucks (don't remember how many but 25 or less).  They said the part was on backorder and it would take about a month.  Three days later I got a brand new binocular from Nikon.

Yes, using a form on the Nikon site. It does it via email.
