Title: badlands sacrifice
Post by: bullcanyon on November 05, 2010, 02:32:59 PM
Well unfortunately I have to say im not impressed with the new sacrifice. Never has my gear gotten wetter inside my pack. I could live with that, but the noise it makes I can't. The frame squeaks so bad that you'll wanna throw it in a canyon and walk away. I thought maybe it was just mine, but two buddies have the same problem. Didn't start until the third or fourth trip in. The material isn't all that strong either.

I will say that the vented back is the only way to go. Id sweat something fierce with my 2200. The layout of the pack worked well. I had 85+ lbs on it coming out with meat and it did ok. But the waterproofness and squeaking have me looking for a replacement.

So what would ya recommend I look at? Thinking about the sitka bivy 45. Which eberlestock would be better for a backcountry bowhunter? Any other ideas?
Thanks

I hate to say it but I'm not surprised.  I've been round and round with BL about the squeaky frames.  I went through 3 Hypervent packs.  I have the Diablo now and really like it for general local hunting.  NO squeaks!  I was going to go with the OX for bigger hunts but they were having production issues.  Send it back but get a RA # from Isaac first.  Good luck!

Trade you a BL 4500 no squeaks.

Funny you say that.  I did send it back without getting the number.  Isaac never gave me one. Called last week to check and they didn't have me in the computer:( We talked for a few and they remembered me thankfully.  So I got one coming, but I think it will be up for sale.  I've been a badlands fan for awhile, but am afraid they don't have the perfect pack in their lineup right now.  Heck maybe nobody does.

I did really enjoy the pack's features, but the squeaking can't be dealt with.  It packed all my gear with ease and cinched down fairly small to use day hunting.  Worked really well on the two bulls I packed out.  Just wish it was at least water resistant and quiet.  They are on the right track though.

Those Kifarus are really nice packs.  I might take a look at that, too.

I think that the Blue Widow is the archery-specific Eberlestock...

I hate to hear you say that!  :bash:  I was really looking at getting one of these packs for next year!

The Sitka 45 is my favority pack, bought one this spring, have packed out several animals with it.  It takes heavy loads well, and is very comfortable.  It can compress enough to use as a day pack, and expands enough to pack out alot of meat.  What ever you do, dont buy eberlestock  :twocents:

Trust me.  I hate to say it.  I really thought it was gonna be the shiznit!!!  Close though.  I talked with Isaac about my complaints and he was heading out the following weekend to test his.  I hope they come up with a fix for the squeak.

The Bone collector 1.5 looks decent.Does anyone have any insight on this pack? :dunno: I am dissapointed to hear this about your pack I have it listed on my want list and am still looking for a good all around pack that can hold up to rough conditions and crappy weather.

I bought a Badlands this year, it is very comfortable but will not keep anything dry.  Needless to say it has been very disappointing.  Is that Sitka pack waterproof??

I have the Kifaru Express, that pack combined with the cargo chair can get extremly heavy loads out while maintaining a day pack sized profile. They do cost more, but it will be the last pack that you need to buy. It is made in The United States of America, Badlands is made in Vietnam or a lot of the manufacturing for the pack is. What do the vietcong know about hunting big game? Check them out at Kifaru.net. You can also get a great deal at their forum board on used gear. Put out a want to buy and the pack you want and someone is usually in contact with you shortly. Most are selling their old Kifaru pack to upgrade to a larger or smaller pack. These things are guaranteed.

I have told them precisely what the issue is and they have yet to fix it.  I was supposed to get an Ox to test two summers ago now...still haven't got my hands on one.  the lead designer and I have talked shop on manufacturing details, materials, etc for quite a while.  The squeaky frames are unacceptable, but just so you know, the squeak is a function of the powder coating (paint) and it rubbing on the material under load.  I've had my packs apart and recreated the noise to pinpoint the issue.  Why it's still an issue is beyond me...not typical BL behavior  :dunno:

I have found the Sitka to be very water proof, and I have been in some of the wetest weather I have ever hunted in this year, while packing out a bear, everything stayed dry.

As I explained to gutpile, my issues with the Just One is that with the sepperated compartments, when you are using it as a day pack, it is near impossible to have a even load.  Say you have a coat, and you put it in one side of the pack, and the whole thing rides noticabley crooked.  I had the same problems when I had the Super Spike duffel in while packing into camp, it rode very crooked.  Also, the suspension system is very uncomfortable, after a couple hours, it felt like my back was gonna explode, which is not an issue with the Sitka 45, which takes heavy loads, incredibly well.  Another issue, which I did not mention to gutpile, was I felt that the gun scabbard pulled the pack away from my back.  Those were my main issues, along with that that scabbard did not work well with my style of hunting.

The only problem with my eberlestock is that now I want a nimrod apex.  :chuckle: Other then that...I love it.

Bummer, I was interested in picking one up. My 2200 developed an annoying creak and squeak this weekend  :bash:

No experience with the original pack in question, but have the 2200. Overall I like it. My back doesn't get any air to it so get sweaty, as others mentioned. Wish the opening for the front pocket was larger so I can fit some binos or something else in there. Other than that seems like a good pack. Am interested in others just to see whats out there.

I've got a j104, had the X1. I loved them both. I have an older Badlands 2200 that I don't like. I don't think each pack is for everybody.  Some will like one kind and not another. Too many people like Eberlestock packs for them to be junk. I'm sure some people don't like  the Sitka packs.

I agree 100%  I am not trying to say that they are junk, I just have had bad experience with them, and they don't work for me, especially for my style of hunting.

I really liked my 2200 until i wore a back with ventilation on the back.  Now i don't wanna use it at all.  Have to though.  My sacrifice is at badlands.

Hit a couple stores today and tried a few packs on.  Nothing really jumped out at me and said buy me.  Cabelas only had the bivy 30.  Felt good, but definetly not big enough for what I do.  Don't think the 4500 is for me.  The eberlestocks just fit weird.  Hard to explain, but I don't think I'll be buying one of those.  The did feel like you could really load em up though.  I've got some serious research to do.  Maybe bl will fix these issues before i find a replacement.  I'd be head over heels for this pack if it was quiet and waterproof.

Have you looked into Nimrod packs out of Cashmere?  They do packs for the firefighter and search and rescue as well as hunting.......damn nice but a little pricey.  Money well spent as well as awesome customer service (USA).

For water proofing/resistant. Couldn't u spray down the pack wth that spray they have on the market or would that be a nono for hunting since it is a foreign smell even when dried n sprayed wth scent killer.

I have a BL SuperDay pack and overall I am happy with it.  I would not call it an excellent pack, but a good one.  It is not waterproof, at all.  I tried the BL waterproof spray.  It did nothing.  This year I used the BL rain cover.  It does an excellent job of keeping the water out, but can slip off (it has a connecting strap, so you do not lose it completely) when going through thick brush, and it is not quiet.  I would like to try the smaller Sitka pack for day hunts.  I would really like to have 10-15 different packs to match specific needs at the time.  That might get a little spendy though.

I understand the sentiment, need2...I'm getting ready to sell a bunch of stuff so that I can buy different things that will match my changing hunting style/locations.

Just ponied up and bought a Mystery Ranch.  Supposed to be here tomorrow.  If everything works like I'm hoping it will, I'll be getting rid of some old packs.  Badlands, Gregory, Cabelas pack frame, maybe an Osprey (haven't decided on that one yet, though.)  Time for a gear turnover - although I don't dislike any of the old gear, just changing some stuff up.

Bought a hypervent last year and then read all the threads about "hypersqueak" :bash:.  The frame on mine is fine but I do get a little noise from the waist belt when it gets wet.  I eliminated the pistol belt I was wearing under it and that took care of 95% of the noise.  Very happy with the pack and it definitely keeps me cooler - which was not the best thing yesterday in the Colonel Bob - I got cold for the first time in a very very long time. The pack works as it should. :twocents:
