Title: Stalked within 10 yards by cougar
Post by: Buckhunter82 on November 05, 2010, 11:09:53 PM
Left work at lunch to hunt the last day of modern elk. Seen quite a bit of sign, but no animals. The sun started to set so it was time to head back. About a mile from my truck I catch a glimpse of a deer moving 30' to my right. With my gun slung over my shoulder, I realize this deer has a long black tipped tail. Not good. Once we made I eye contact and she started to slowly move toward me in a crouched position, it was time to fill my cougar tag. I introduced her to my .300 wsm. I've always had this fear in the back of my mind, but convinced myself it wouldn't happen to me. Out of curiousity, if I wouldn't have caught her out of the corner of my eye, do you guys think she would have attacked? By her behavior it seems so, but I would like to think otherwise.

It would be a guess to say she would have attacked or not, cougars follow often. The person is just not aware of being followed most times. In cougar areas, if you follow your previous days hiking tracks in the snow, you will often see where you have been followed by a cougar. At that distance and situation it is best not to take a chance. I have had them follow me out of the woods at night. You would hear them chirp as they followed along just out of sight. When I first heard this I thought it was a bird, wondering what it was out doing after dark. I once went back a day after hunting a area, and found where a cougar followed me and my wife out. The cat cut ahead and laid on a rock about 10 feet above me and my wife's head and 10 feet off the trail. Another time my brother-in-law Bill and I were hiking out after dark. The trail was poorly maintained, we would often loose the trail. Bill would wait at the last defined trail while I went ahead to find where we were supposed to be. He would shut his flash light off to save batteries. When I would call to him he would just come tearing down to where I was at. This happened several times on the couple mile hike out. When we got back to our camp, he told me something was following us out, he could hear it walking behind us. The next day when we went back, there were cougar tracks in our tracks almost to camp.

WOW.  How much does that girl weigh?  The head is huge.  Makes the spine tingle for sure.  What part of the state did you shoot her in?  Where did you hit her and did she go down quick?  Did you ruin any underwear?  30' is too close for comfort.  Details Please.

My buddy was rattling horns up near Republic WA and had a cougar come in on him.  Shot it from the hip, he said the main on it was all flaired out when he first seen it coming through some brush 20' away.  Shot it from the hip and then ran up to the road and almost jumped in the back of a passer bys truck.  As they were waiting there listening they could here the tail wipping back in forth in the brush.  Spooky.  He's a lot jumpier than he used to be when sneeking around in the bush, and has a full body mount that reminds him of how quick the hunter can become the hunted.  You should do the same.

Congrats man.  Thats just awesome.

Nice job on the cat! I've only seen 3 in my life. 2 were out by the nile and the other was down the road from our house in Buckley. Don't know how many times I've had one track em when I'm out in the woods, heard a few scream at night though.

She weighed out at 170lbs. I hit her in the chest. Didn't look too bad till I skinned her and discovered a hole I could put my fist through. She dropped on the spot which made me happy. Hard to feel bad for a critter that puts you in a situation like that. I was hunting national forest in Chewelah about 45 miles north of Spokane. Would love a full body mount, but don't have the funds. Calling the taxi right now to decide what I'm gonna do with her.

It should take a while to get a full mount done, which should help you pay for it.  That cat is big and would be a great looking mount, I've been hunting a long time like most of us and I have only killed one cat. I decided to mount the 5 year old male I shot and have never regretted it, and it cost 2000.  Nice job in saving lots of deer and elk, maybe yourself.

Back before St. Helens blew I was bivied on the Shoestring Glacier waiting for some light so we could do this climb I was wanting to do. We were dozing off when there was the hell of a loud scream that made your friggin' hair stand on end. Armed with ice axes and crampons we quickly put the crampons on and gripped our ice axes, day light could no come fast enough.

I'd sure like to see a cougar some day, and if the situation was right nail one.

The last week of the general season, when we got the snow. I was hunting east of Chewelah and saw the second largest cougar track I have ever seen. I was in national forest, any chance the same area?

The largest cougar track I ever saw, was about 1970 in the same area. A week after I saw that track, a 200 pound plus, cougar male was taken. That area produces some large cats. The average mature cougar female, only weights about 105 pounds.

What a beauty! (Double check the gender there, sometimes it's really hard to tell! 170 is a colossal female... it's a big male too, honestly!)

Excellent reaction, and well done!

Since it saw you, and it knew you saw it, and still wasn't hunkered down hiding, or slinking away, all bets were off. I'm not saying it would have rushed you, but it had gone beyond a stalk (for you and for the cat.) 100% unpredictable situation, and very dangerous. Something was going to happen. It was going to bolt, either for you or away. You did the right thing... and you tagged a GREAT trophy!

(Rugs are super nice too!  :P )

That is one great looking cat. I had something of a similar experience a few years ago. I had a very large male stalk me within 30' or less. I really was taken by suprise by it and could not believe it's size when it came towards me out of the brush. My cat weighed 210 pounds and it's picture is in the 2009 gallery of cats and such on this web site.

When these things happen, it makes me wonder, the news always reports how few deaths there are from cats and bears. I wonder if that is because hunters that have this happen just shot before the animal had a chance to attack.

I am glad that you came out on top in this situation! I rugged mine out by the way and am very happy with it.

Joe

Hangfire- This was 2-3 miles east of town. It's a mixture of national and state. Two years ago on the same road, but a few miles further up I saw a huge cat. Had to be 200lbs+ and I haven't stepped into the woods without a gun since. Luckily that one was going the other way. My assumption is the 2 hard winters we had a few years ago isn't the only reason for the low deer numbers. :dunno:

Probably not the same cat, but I was within 6 miles of there. I am going to touch up my cougar call sounds and practice with the call I got from Rainshadow. I hope to be back up there this week, if we get some snow. After late buck if conditions good, I may try calling with my muzzle loading shot gun, with buck shot. I think that would be a neat hunt. If I feel really good I may take the flintlock 12 gauge.

Your cat would make a very nice rug.

Kudos to you on your harvest Buckhunter82!!

This is the second cougar I have seen harvested this year by non-hound hunters. I saw a Female in the back of a truck above northport this last week also. It also was a large cat and when the WDFG agent was sealing the hide he sexed it as a female.

Congrats again

It's hard to say if the cougar would have attacked.  According to the WDFW (judge accuracy for yourself  ;)) there's only been 1 fatal and 15 non-fatal cougar attacks in WA recorded in the last 100 years.

That being said, in your shoes I would have taken the shot as well.  It's nice to have the peace of mind.  It will also be a good conversation piece for the rest of your life.  Two years ago while hiking north of Lake Chelan I was sidehilling next to a steep draw to avoid the brush at the bottom of the draw.  I reached a small rock outcropping and started to ascend to go around it. A heard a few little rocks tumble and looked up thinking I would see a deer running off.  Instead I saw a large cougar looking down at me. A couple seconds later it turned and run over the spur out of sight.  The size of it's tail sticks out so vividly in my mind. I wish I was carrying at the time.  I was covered with goose bumps the rest of the 4 mi. hike back to my car and I got a kink in my kneck from walking looking backwards the whole time.

That's an impressive animal you got there  :brew:

Nice cat and crazy encounter.  I am skeptical that this is a female.  Adult females weigh on average 90-110 lbs and sexing cougars can sometimes become difficult because the testes are sometimes not noticeable like a house cats.  I may be wrong and not trying to rain on your parade.  I've seen game wardens mis identify the sex of a cougar.  Unless you could see noticeable teats on her i would be skeptical. See the link below for identifying sex of a cougar. If this is in fact a 170 lb female its gotta be some kind of record.

Yeah its either the weight is off and it is a female or the weight is correct and its a male.  But the picture doesn't appear to be a 170 lb cat. But nonetheless its a real good looking cougar and congrats to you on harvesting it.

I had a cat come in during deer season. Guy said it was a female.......I had to show him where the nuts were  :chuckle: It was a 100 pound Tom .

I guess I didnt mean it wasnt a 170 pound cat , but a 170 female , that is unreal.

Id like to know carcass measurements. I know my 160 pound Tom was 58 inches from the nose to base of tail and 38 in girth around the belly.

OOps , just saw the new post that it was a Male  :chuckle:

AWESOME, Congrats on the cat!!!! Great story too, glad it worked out in your favor!

Question for the masses and a hypothetical not realated to this guys encounter:
What if you were in an area where you weren't allowed to hunt cougar and this same scenario happened?  Obviously one wouldn't want to take any chances and find out what the cougar had in mind.  Can you shoot in self defense at that distance, or would the game warden give you a hard time.  I buy a cougar tag every year, more for protection.  I for one wouldn't think twice and would shoot the cat and worry about the questions/consequences later.  Would the gamies just take the animal after you reported the encounter?  I've always been leary in the woods, and after reading all of your stories in this thread, I don't feel any easier about going out in the woods alone.

I told you it was hard to tell sometimes! It's still a great cat, a great kill, and a great story!

Double +1 on the face/taxidermist. Don't scrimp. (I don't care if your kid cousin wants to be a taxidermist someday!) Bad cat faces are HORRIBLE!!! I mean, you won't even want to show it. Definately look at their gallery of work.

Michelle did my first rug, and it's beautiful! Charlie's got my second hide, but it was far too nice to rug, so I'm just having it tanned since I can't afford a full mount right now. (I might want to mount it with a big male someday.)

Edit: @ question for the masses... "Bang!" Take pictures, mark your position, leave the cat there, call the warden. You'd be fine. You could likely have let them take this one and call it self defense... but why would you do that?!?! It's a gorgeous cat!

Mt wife's nephew had one come running at him when he was crouched down in the brush glassing for deer about 10 years ago. He shot it at a few feet. He reported it to FW and had to hand over the cat. No further problem. He may have had a problem if the cat had been further away, with out firing a shot into ground, hollering etc. If he had tried to keep the cat with out reporting it, would have been a problem, if discovered.

Hope you don't mind me posting mine. This one was weighed by my taxi and was 160 lb tom. Had its nose ripped open in a fight with something. I blew my deer call in the timber and saw this cougar running in my direction, thought it was a deer. When I shot, it was only 15yds away! I got a full mount and it is worth every penny. Definitely use a good taxi, lots of them mount deer and elk very well, but cant do cats.

After comparing your pic to mine I can see it hitting 170lbs. Its probably one of your favorite hunts now huh? Awesome job!! Ask for the skull back, looks great by the mount!

I got him in the vail tree farm in skookumchuck. Here he is mounted. My taxi fixed the nose on it. See the ruffed up ears? He had scars all over his face too, this kitty was a fighter! The scar on his left ham was from the bullet exiting, that shows the angle of the shot, he was running right at me! Yeah I know, we need to dust up there, but its so hard to reach.... :P

If you're ever in this postion and are wondering if it's a male or female, look for the black spot under the tail on a male.

Good post gopher.

I've seen males without the black spot showing. Sack was there, but hard to tell what it was, not what you'd expect. Sometimes the sack is obvious. Doesn't necessarily correspond with age either. Wierd.

If there is a black spot, it's a givaway.

It took almost 2 years to get it back. But most of that time was me making payments. He doesnt start work until half is payed. I didnt mind though, made the payments easy. :)
