I'll buy them skinned and air dried or will buy just the guard hair.
-
How much. I might be able to round you up a dozen this winter.
-
Judging by his moniker and location, I would say Native American art. I have seen some realy nice stuff done with porky quills. Cut and dye them and use for bead work.
-
guard hair is used for paint brushes.
-
I would like to get hold of one just for decoration in my home.

Wow some curious people, Yes we are Native American and have a craft supply store in Cherokee,NC. I travel up that way to see my brother in Alaska 2-3 times a year and am looking for some contacts for furs and general animal parts. Our website is www.powwowoutfittersgwy.com (http://www.powwowoutfittersgwy.com) the other website is some people that we met a few years back that liked our name and used it for them selves. I'm over it now. Anyway I'm looking for 50-100 skinned and air dried porky's with quills and hair. I'm also looking for 10-20 pounds of porcupine guard hair and will buy any over 6 inches long.
On the hides I pay 10.00-18.00 each depending on size and the hair I pay 15.00-25.00 per ounce plus shipping on both.
So if you see any quill pigs and want to make some money please let me know.
Here is a pic of a belt buckle my wife made for me a few years back out of porky quills.
Knife sheath I made last year and a pipe that's in the SmithSonian museum that we did.

Is it legal for us in Washington to sell animal parts?
-
Depends on what parts.
-
What would a porcupine like this be worth? :chuckle:

Sivart33: salt and eggs brings them from miles around
Woodywsu: skin them up the belly, chop off the feet, split the tail and lay out like a beaver.

It's actually illegal to sell/purchase in this state because porcupines aren't considered "wild animals". To see what animals are "wild animals" look at WAC 232-12-007

That only shows you "Game animals" and "fur bearers". Porcupines, opossums, skunks, mountain beavers and others are considered "unclassified" and have no season or limits but are still considered "wildlife".
Scroll down to small game season.

bixtex please post the RCW or WAC that says porcupines are illegal to sell in the State of Washington. The only WAC I can find that talks about the legal and illegal buying and selling of animals in Washington is:
WAC 232-12-071 Agency filings affecting this section
Buying or selling game unlawful — Game-farmed meat exception.
(1) Unless prohibited by federal regulations, nonedible parts of wild animals, game birds or game fish lawfully taken may be offered for sale, sold, purchased or traded, except it is unlawful to offer for sale, sell, purchase or trade the following unless authorized by a written permit issued by the director:
(a) Nonedible parts of bighorn sheep or mountain goat.
(b) Velvet antlers of deer or elk.
(c) Gall bladder, claws, or teeth of bear, except those claws or teeth permanently attached to a full bear skin or mounted bear.
(2) It is unlawful to knowingly buy, sell, or otherwise exchange, or offer to buy, sell, or otherwise exchange the raw fur or carcass of a wild animal trapped in Washington with a body-gripping trap, whether or not pursuant to permit.
(3) It is lawful to purchase and sell the meat of game-farm raised deer and elk, provided the meat is imported from a licensed game farm in another state or country, the meat is boned and only meat is imported for sale, and the meat is packaged for retail sale prior to import into this state. It is unlawful to fail to maintain proof of the source of the game-farmed meat together with the meat until the meat is consumed or exported

No need to shoot them, all you have to do is hit them in the head with a stick, you don't have to swing it like a club either, just a light tap on top of the head does the trick. I was amazed the first time I saw it done, I couldnot believe how light of a rap it took to kill a porky. Of course the porky knows this too, so he will roll his head down under his chest to protect it and span out the quills.

:) I've decided i want to mount a porky rug. :yike: Just don't snuggle to close with it.

Nice welcome mat. ;) What would be really cool is a coon skin style hat.

I just talked to a Capt with the WDFW and he says that Porcupines are considered unclassified wildlife. Unless sprecifically listed as illegal to sell in WAC 232-12-071 (posted above), listed as endangerd or threatened, they are LEGAL to buy the hides and non edible parts.
-
So michelle how much for a lifesize porky mount?
-
For those of you that have asked about the shipping, I will email you a UPS shipping label and can either schedule a pickup or you can drop the box off with UPS. So you wont have to be reinbursed for shipping. Any other questions please just ask.
-
Still buying so if you have any let me know.
Thanks in advance
-
Got another fatty 2 nights ago  added to the stock pile :chuckle:
-
Great, keep stacking it up.
I'm looking for another 10 pounds or so but would buy 20.
-
My cousin's german shorthair just got into one...twice...within a week. $900 later he's all healed up. Sounds like he needs to do some porcupine hunting!
-
We're still buying hair so if you have some let us know.
Thanks in advance

Not true at all. I'm very surprised you posted that.

My dad does the trapping for like 4 or 5 timber companies. I think his quota for this year should be between three and four hundred. I highly doubt he will take the time to skin any but he always pulls the guard hair on the good ones. I believe last year he was getting $26 per ounce. I didn't read this whole thread so how much are you looking for and was are you paying and I will pass it on to him.
