Hey I'm wanting to take a couple friends from work out elk hunting for the late muzzy hunt and their wanting to hunt the 505 area. The only time I ever hunt 505 is on private property that I have access to but I'm not taking them to my honey holes so I was just wondering if there is access up above mayfield lake somewere, maybe around Mossyrock. I know there's good hunting in there but not sure of access though. Or is there any other place around 505 that we can get into. I don't want any honey hole's just somewhere to hike or drive around in. Thanks all!!

The elk in the Mossyrock unit are pretty few and far between these days. You'll have to be more specific when saying "above Mayfield Lake" because certain areas are Mossyrock Unit and others are Winston Creek Unit. The best thing for them to do is just drive until they find fresh tracks crossing a road and then get on them and go. 10 years ago I would have said just pick a spot and you'll find elk, not the case anymore.

This unit has very little public land that elk live on. And the public that does hold elk doesn't hold very many. And all of the public land during the late muzzy hunt gets pounded.

Like Bigfoot and Bigshooter said, they are very few elk on the public land in the mossyrock unit. The small piece of public land south of mossyrock gets pounded harder in late muzzle loader then the winston does in rifle season. you can spend a whole season up there not see an elk. One thing I can guarantee is you will see tons and tons of people. I would wear orange if you are planning on hunting up there in muzzle loader season. those guys shoot at just about anything that moves up there.
