so I shot these Wigeon today and the middle bird I think is a Eurasian Wig... what do you guys think? I just see the redish color to the head and the wing patches are grey rather than green...
-
Thats what it looks like just an immature one...

I would say no to the Eurasian Wigeon. It probably has just been out in the bay longer than the other ones. You will notice on the wigeon, pintail, snows they get that golden color to there white feathers from sitting in the bay. You shot the brown bag today.

they are around. buddy got one last year
-
love those euro wigeon :IBCOOL: but not sure thats is what you have in that pic. i agree i think it is a wigeon that has come from a diffrent area and is a little off colored. congrats on the birds :IBCOOL:
-
ok... its just that I have shot a lot of wigeon and I have NEVER seen one with this kind of coloring before... so it through me off....
-
Jordano-
The heads of immature euros that I have shot were much more "rusty" colored than the middle bird. While those immature birds were not as fully colored as the mature drake heads typically pictured they did stand out as "different" in a mix bag of widgeon.
Never the less an interesting colored bird.

Correct they are around. Saw two yesterday, but didn't have a shot on either one. You will know when you get one.
-
Well I guess I was wrong.. the head looks rusty to me though... but I am colorblind :bash:
-
I don't think it is a drake... just wondering if it is a hen... the coloring is not that of an american wigeon....
-
Ya, Ive seen them around!! In parks, private land, and refuges. I have yet to see one coming into my decs!! :'(

Yea it is but like h2ofwler said...its been in the salt or brack for awhile...same reason why you kill teal that have brownish bellies instead of white....looks like 3 hens to me
-
Think the two outside ones are young drakes and the middle one's a hen
-
I bet it came off the !@#$ ponds!

haha, it actually came off a ditch chocked full with duck weed

3 hen American's. If they were juv'e males, would see some black in the rump. Age and where the birds have been stageing can contribute to color variations. Seeing more and more Euro's in last couple years. Mounted 3 this summer-------DUCKS-----
