Two rats probably worth the same as one beaver and a lot less work. Nice!
How are they looking for prime?
Fatslinger told me she caught a beaver and otter and they were pretty blue. Seems a little early to be trapping. Rats might be OK though.

No not adc jimbo,,,,,,,,, fur trapping,,,,,, Cagn baby!!!!!

Probably is eaaly bruce,,,,, I have some free time and they
are worth more in the freezer then in the swamp......plus as you know rats and beaver don't prime till after the price drops ,,,,, lol

Dropped some coon beaver and rats to george brady last weekend in the round,,,but have not asked him how the looked,,  You sould have seen the dirty look i got for the three dink coons...and a micro mini rat...lol.......

I will skin the these beaver in the morning and let you know

When setting traps remember that colony traps do not need to be drowning sets.... took 4 live in pass thew sets today,,,, Mink can sometime be a problem

This is what a big mink will do IF the doors are to short in a colony trap,,,,,,Longer traps (32-36 inch)and doors if your target is Mink
This trap was fully submerged

This picture shows the different  sized cages i am using,,, there is 5 in, 6in and 8x18in with 6 inch high doors...............

this is the trapping area I am hitting  with the high water....just pull over and act like you are supposed to be there...........

Grass cover does not work as well as i hoped unless you can get a big pile over the trap......Today I had many rats just swim over the trps using the grass as a walkway,,,,,, I will be bringing logs to this ditch later today to see if it improves the catch ratio

Dave,
Where do you buy your cage trap parts?
Title: Re: Rats not cats..................................................
Post by: Hannibal on November 21, 2010, 05:46:37 PM
Bruce/others
from a farm supply store. Most will have 1x2 and 1x1 wire.
It is cheap junk china wire is the problem....You will also need cage wire clips and a crimping pliers if you don't want to twist the wire (picture later).

Bob had the "good" clips at the Rondy,,,,,I need to get that info from him,,He also had a line on us wire,,,,

Dave, The company is Klubertanz.com they have good US made wire, shipping is a killer. They are located in wisconsin I think, they have anything and everything for cage building. Keep posting pictures.bob

Thanks Bob!!!!   Can you tell us what size you use for the colony trap AnD WHAT  pliers you bought??

What clips would work with 1/4 rod frames??...................

Here is my simple brake made from scrap steel,,,, I put a gauge above the handle for bending measurements

(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwawildlife.com%2Fmuskratcagedetailwirebrake.jpg&hash=25de2e64bade3fe4f9b58bfd31fe157059fc1684)

I put marks on my table to make my cuts for different size cages

Here is a detail; for the doors using the wire instead of clips,,,,,

Dave, I've been out of town for a few days so thats why I haven't answered until now. The ringer pliers I use are Republic brand #ZXXR I use the 1/2" rings, cat#ROSO, for most of my cage work. I do use some smaller RCKS rings that are 3/8" rings. The 1/2" rings do not work on 1/4" rod, thinking you will need a larger ring such as a 3/4" or 1" . You can see whats available on there online catalog. Plus they have a free 800 number so you can call them and see what they recommend.I burchased these several years ago so I don't know whats available right now. The company is klubertanz.com, Hope this helps. later, bob

They may bring about that much this year. I received about a $7 average last year and they may advance some from that is what I'm reading.

Cool!  I trapped muskrats when I was a kid in New England.  I think the average price for a pelt was $1.50 back then.  But that was a lot of money in the 1950's.

This picture shows a wide channel set
If you look at the picture you can see the "light Brown" in the water,,,,,This is the channel inside of the channel...
looking at the bottom and noticing the difference in the vegetation or rust or mud will teach you to be a better trapper.
Aging of sign is key to success

Male mink

Any trap that actually "grabs" onto an animal will require some special hoops to jump through ( except for commercially produced rat and mouse traps - they can still be used).  Cage traps can be used with just a trapping license during trapping season.  Cages can be set underwater, but are still referred too by most as "live" traps.

"Rats" = trapper slang for muskrat   -So not the typical "sewer" rat, just in case that was were this was going.
