Title: Big Cat
Post by: 6x6rack on November 12, 2010, 06:21:02 PM
My hunting buddy was elk hunting on Weds and had a cougar shadowing him. BOOM....dead Kitty. 148 pound female. Gamie is measuring her for a possible record book entry...said it is a big cat. Any of you cougar guys know just how big this is for a female?

125 pounds is a pretty big female.  148 is really large for a female.

its a very big female. the avg female is around 90-100lbs. the biggest i have ever seen with a full gut is around 160-170. cats can be a little hard to tell the sex on. another guy on here thought he had a female but it turned out to be a male. the gamie will tell when they see it and take the samples.

Gamie took teeth and measurements on Thursday. It is a female. I will get a picture from him and post it. It was up in the Carbonado area.

It had been following, shadowing for a while up the hill from them. After a while, up-hill from them got real steep. The cat started coming down towards them and in front of them. He took a knee and it walked into the trail they were on, and boom...a 30-06 at 25 yards through the lungs and heart. She flipped up and landed on her back right where she had stood...not another twitch. I guess Cats don't ALWAYS land on their feet! :chuckle:

i dont think most females will go much over 100lbs :twocents:. seen it alot where people think they shot a big female but its really a male, its kinda hard to tell the sex and most wont know unless someone shows you

Really, less than 100 pounds for an adult female?  I haven't seen a lot of them but the only ones I have seen under 100 pounds, way smaller than me at 165, were the four cubs with this one.  I would have guessed 150+ on her.  Am I way off??

I don't mean to threadjack...

Not possible, there is only 2000 cats in the whole state.  That means there cannot be a ton in one area.   :chuckle:

Still surprises me.  That one looks like it would weigh as much as you.  BTW, you must be pretty scrawny to be obly 150 at 6'3"....   :chuckle:

They are if you can't get the viewing right angle. The black spot is the givaway.  I'm sure before the shot the hunter had no idea, but once it's dead it should be pretty easy to tell.  :chuckle:

I finally got one picture, with more coming. This is just as the cat landed after he shot it! He put the soda can beside it for scale of the paws.

Nice cat! Good story!

Their nuts are often kind-of internalized sometimes, and the sac can look like vulva. The black spot sometimes isn't apparent. It's often tricky.

That's a nice cat, but the head doesn't look huge, so it's possible it's a female.

The cat is 100% female, final official weight is 146 pounds. Nice to know there will be 50 more deer and elk a year in Carbanado!

Nice cat big for a female. I shot one in 2005 that was just shy of 7 foot and weighed 125 pounds, and a buddy shot one that weighed 137 pounds. Both were big females but yours takes the cake. congrats

if thats a accurate weight that would be super huge for a female.like record breaking weight.so good job if it is. average female is 80-90 pounds for adult cats. upper 140s is average weight for a big mature tom 4 years or older. i have treed hundreds of lions and weighed over 150 live cats on cougar studys. the cats are weighed when still alive after being darted to be fitted for tracking collar. biggest female i have weighed was 117 and she had kittens a short time later. have heard of a 121 also in this state, but also had kittens shortly later.good job and nice looking cat

Gawd I'd love to kill me a cat like that one!  146 pounds is huge for a female lion in the northwest. Wow! Nice.

Catdog or any of you...what are the biggest Toms you have weighed?

I've seen a few on the scale myself. We've only weighed a couple females, didn't kill the others... one was 110# and 11 yrs old, the other was 6 yrs old and 95#...

Toms we've weighed (50-60??) are in the 110-186# range.. with anything over 155 being the exception...

while 148 for a feemale is large its not uncomen records dont have anything to do with weight its all about the skull size a 148 femanle might have just eaten and after three or four days of not eating you could be lookin at a 130 so congrats its a dead kitty and a nice one but its not breaking any records

186lbs is the biggest ever that I've seen.  Another 160lb.  Very few in the 150's, but several in the 140s.  Avg male lion in my opinon, 120lbs.  Avg female lion, 80lbs.  Any male lion 145lbs and above is an exceptional lion in WA and any female over 90lbs is a damn nice female.  I feel that the lions that are feeding on elk are prone to weigh more also.

Mt muley youv'e definitely got your facts straight, including the elk feeders seem to be bigger.   Had two lions now people brought over and showed me their female that were toms.  One was even sexed by a supposed expert lion hunter and he mis sexed it.  Toms balls are about the size of a peanut (the edible part) and you have to dig into the fur to find them with no hanging sack for sure, just very small little lump you can't see , just have to feel.    Seldom is a female over 110 and toms don't get much over 140 in areas they only feed on deer.
