2010 Late Hunt

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I just got home from 1 full day of hunting. I went over the weekend before and saw a lot of bucks but nothing I wanted to notch my tag on. This time I had from the 12th to the 20th off and was fully prepared for tag soup if I did't find a special buck.
Yesterday we took off up a drainage I had scouted the weekend before. We began seeing deer the minute we left the truck and started our ascent up the hill. The fog was thick it would lift for a half hour or so at a time and then settle back in again. We were glassing the opposite hillside and seeing bucks all over the place when the fog settled in for about an hour. We got tired of waiting and decided to still hunt the trees and see what we could find. We had already seen 13 bucks with 2 worthy of a closer look but with the fog we were out of luck on those 2. As soon as we entered the trees I crept up to the edge of the hill and looked over the side. There were 2 does looking my direction with a big bodied deer behind them. I knew he was a buck from the body size, and brought up the binoculars for a closer inspection. He was 82 yards out and I looked him over carefully before I turned and told Charles he was the one. After the shot we walked down the steep hill side down to him and were excited to find exactly what I was after. He definately didn't shrink when we got up on him . This is what we found and a few other pics.

-
Thanks Charlie, it was nice meeting you today. You do some awesome work.
-
Man that is my dream buck, I absolutely love the main frame! That buck is going to look fantastic hanging on the wall. Which late tag did you draw? What was the unofficial green score on that bad boy?
-
very nice buck Ironhead  grats
-
Thanks again guys.
(Disclaimer I am not an official scorer)
The buck will be officially scored at the end of the drying period.
That being said, I have scored a couple a critters in my time and the official score will be within a couple inches of what I post. If you disagree with the score thats fine with me but please don't make this thread into an argument. I have put a tape on the antlers.
Also, no scanner so this is a pic of the score sheet. The inline point was deducted 3 4/8. I just couldn't get it all in the picture

way to go. I love the pick of you holding him and just looking at him. Man I know what was going through your mind. Hopefully I will be doing the same next week. Sucks now the taxidermist will have him for way to long.
I sure agree. I too know what was going threw is mind. And yes, waiting on a taxi to get done may be one of the longest waits in life. One other highly anticipated waits is waiting on your kid to bake in the wife's tummy. Getting your deer/elk mount is longer than that! :chuckle: What a giant Ironhead, Congrats!
