Title: WT Shed Excursion
Post by: Timber on April 07, 2008, 12:06:26 AM
I headed east this weekend to find some sheds. The first thing I did was check a camera I setup in the area at the end of December, to see if there were any big bucks hanging around in January during the shedding season. I was happy to see pictures of these nice bucks among a few others. The second buck I have chased around for the last 2 years with my bow and also have not been able to find last years sheds.

I didn't find sheds from either of these two bucks but found nine other sheds.

Two of the horns are a matched set. They each have over 20 inches of mass, with the largest mass measurement being over 6 inches. I was amazed to find these horns, because I have only seen this buck once and that was in 2004.

looks like you need to be searching alittle harder to find those beauties before the rat b@st@rds that chew'em up. nice finds though, i'd like to have a whitey area.  I'll have to settle for elk.

I'm glad your gas money was better spent then my last couple trips.  I went Wednesday beofre our family outing on Thursday and there was a foot of fresh snow.  Made me ill. 9 hours of driving for NOTHING!   Nice bones.

I know what you mean boneaddict. I feel your pain. When I woke up Saturday morning there was a couple of inches of snow on the ground and it was still snowing hard - I had a sick feeling in my stomach. It warmed up pretty fast though and by noon the new snow had melted.
I was surprised that some of the fresh sheds I found had already been chewed on pretty good. What chews on them - Squirrels?

Is there very many porcupines over there :dunno:? Super finds with the sheds. Did you find any turkeys to photograph?

There's probably a few porcupines over there, but I've never seen one.
As for turkeys, I only saw a few. Hopefully more will show up in the next few weeks.

Mostly squirrels and chipmunks.  Porcs do a number on them too, but not very many porcs anymore.  The NE corner has tremendous "predation" on antlers by those little rodents.  Some get nailed when they hit the ground.

Nice Turkeys.

Here are the results from another shed excursion. I found 7 whitetail sheds on Saturday and 1 mule deer shed on Sunday.

Here is a matched 140 set found 35yds apart.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi177.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fw207%2Fjontimmer%2FDSC00577copy.jpg&hash=b623ad30ed24e986700b2e2e3d9c0c614c18ed90)

I almost missed this one because I was distracted by all of the rubs.

The mule deer shed I found is a match to the one a friend of mine found on Saturday. With a 23 inch spread credit he scores 175.

After looking at some video footage and comparing sticker points, we are pretty sure the horns are from this deer.

He's only going to be able to make one trip over there - May 23-26. With the late spring we are having he should hit it just right, but it's no guarantee with only 3 1/2 days to hunt.

Made another trip over. Found a small muley shed and this 70in Wt shed. It's the '06 horn from the big buck in the trail camera picture.

Made another trip over last weekend. Spent most of the weekend bear hunting and cutting wood, but did get out for a few hours to look for sheds. I found 3 small ones. The vegetation is getting thick!
