Title: I'm a lucky SOB.......
Post by: RaffleMule on November 17, 2010, 12:46:13 PM
Companions/Hunters/Outdoor Enthusiasts

I was the lucky recipient of the Mule Deer Raffle for Washington State and was just informed of this site over the weekend while on a hunt.  Since I have been eating and breathing Mule Deer since Sept 1st I thought I might as well find another reason to become distracted at work.  The stories, pictures and advice from everyone are such a great resource and definitely a common ground to us all.  Your forum has prompted me to put something together to chronicle my adventure in hope of returning the favor.

First of all, I look in the mirror and call myself a lucky SOB every day.  Then I proceed to work and feel guilty/pissed off/anxious (because I am not hunting) only to feel an enormous amount of pressure after I read emails from people asking if I have found the 200’ buck yet.  Trust me, when I started this I thought a 200’ was in the bag and I might settle for a 190’ if I had Xmas plans and didn’t feel like driving up North again.  As this Lottery unfolds I can promise you if I end up with a 175’ so be it, this experience will never be replicated so hopefully I can share it with you.  Yes, I am a lucky SOB………

When I received the call from the WDFW and they asked me to verify my name and address without stating the reason and all I could think of was what the hell did I do….take 16 razor clams instead of the allotted 15?  Forget to turn in a hunting report?  As I reluctantly whispered my name he said congrats you’ve won the Mule Deer Raffle and all the rules/tags/etc. would be mailed within 7-10 days.  Again, I heard the phrase you are a “lucky guy” although I know he meant SOB….

I get off the phone and think to myself “now what?”  I’m not a mule deer guy.  In fact my only experience was hunting in Dayton the previous year and seeing 100 deer a day and getting hooked.  I grew up on the Olympic Peninsula hunting elk and deer with open site rifles because we never fired over 75-100 yds and a scope would be fogged up or wet.  I had never carried a pair of binos in my life.  My Dayton experience was a whole new ball game.  So, I began reaching out to people and I heard the same thing……you lucky SOB.  You are going to shoot a 200’ Pig.  I then start to call outfitters in every corner of the state asking if “they have 200’ bucks” roaming around.  Kind of funny looking back!  I now know why they all laughed and said “nope” not here.  I did here a common theme though and it was hunt the Desert in Sept., hang out in Oct. and then live up North from mid-Nov-Dec.  Do these people have jobs?  A wife?  I figure in the next month I may lose both.

I could go on and on about the people I have spoken to….some good guys but most extremely selfish and a lot are full of sh*t (is profanity allowed in the forums?  I like to swear but trying to keep it respectable in my virgin post).  I’ll stop there but I do want to thank some guys.   I’ll keep there names off the board unless they want to chime in but you know who you are…….I do appreciate it!

Sept. 1st rolls around and I feel like a buck in the rut.  I called the local WDFW office to tell them where I will be (regulations) but with more on the agenda.  I was hoping this dude would just tell me where Mr. 200’ was hanging out and I would be the new state record holder.  He was a nice guy and told me they just flew the potholes area and “wasteland” analyzing and counting dead ducks but spooked up some bucks along the way.  I asked if he had seen any nice ones and of course he replied yes…..I waited for more but he wasn’t budging.   Maybe it was my westside accent?  We just ended the call with him saying “it’s been pretty dry over here, good luck getting them out of their beds.”  Any of you hunted the Desert Unit?  They don’t tell you when the water levels are low those deer are not coming out and you aren’t going in.  My first weekend in the Desert I did not see one single deer……not even a doe.  Hmmmmffffff………

Now, I just go back yesterday from another trip to the Desert.  They are in the rut and there are deer running all over place.  I have seen between 20-50 deer per day the last 3 times I have been out there but it is tough area to hunt.  Looks like desert but the illusional pockets and deep sage make it ideal for deer to vanish before your eyes.  If I threw out a ballpark figure, I have seen probably 100 bucks so far but nothing above 190’.  I’ve seen two deer between 180-185’ and probably five above 165’.  Some of the people who have joined me have taken pictures and videotaped some deer so hopefully we can put some things together to share with the group.

This is getting a little long so I’ll shut up but I’ll try to jump back in and give everyone an update as the weeks go by.  It’s becoming “go time”

Don't be afraid to wait til after the rut, I killed mine on December 30th.  I found new bucks rolling in well into the winter.  And don't be afraid to hunt somewhere besides the Desert Unit, it certainly has big bucks in it, but not the only place to find a trophy mulie!

Just because you have the best tag in the state, doesn't mean you don't need a little luck to go with it, but you're right about one thing... it's the experience of a lifetime!

Enjoy it.

Thanks for sharing your awesome adventure. Don't worry about "doing justice" to the tag, just get out and enjoy the experience. Good luck. Whatever deer you harvest will be the memory of a lifetime either way.  :)

Did I mention....I'm very jealous........ :chuckle:

You say you haven't hunted mule deer much and just got into it.....You have the tag all of us dream of, but myself, as well as many could attest to i'm sure, I would not pass on a 190" buck with that tag.  However, if it is a 200" buck you seek good luck they are out there but there aren't many.  200" is a score, a large score though.  Have you even shot a mule deer?  I dont know how you are passing on 185"-190" bucks if you've never shot one, i usually figure people that have never hunted a particular species shoot smaller ones their first time.  You have better finger control on that trigger than I ever would if i had that tag.  Shoot one that makes you happy, we're not here to judge you or criticize you for shooting a 180" deer, i dream of shooting deer that big.  Good luck, keep us posted.

Yeah, I heard the wolves ate most of them, and the Indians shot the rest. :chuckle:

True story. Everybody  might as well not even apply next year. I'll handle it again. I got everybody's back on this one. I have a backup gun to fend off the wolves. I read that thread about the wolf gun and I am prepared.

You are one lucky person.  The snake river breaks, the crab creek area, and the areas around Lamont hold some big mules.  I'm sure you have been tiped off to these areas, they are really good.

Then slinger talked me into driving up and over the cascade range.  all we saw were no deer and some wolf tracks.  Might explain the lack of deer in the area.

Then we finally found some deer and a couple of good bucks.  First was a retarded 2 point then the next was massy, then a good 4 point and some smaller bucks.  Another canyon over slinger spotted a bedded buck and some antlers sticking out of the grass.

Hornseeker,

Nothing yet.......I thought you had him tied up for me!  :dunno:

Heading NE or to Wenatchee/Chelan on Friday depending on the weather.  I think it's dumping today and tomorrow so a lot will depend on mother nature.  I don't have access to sleds this weekend and the truck may be pushing snow in Entiat/Swakane areas.  As long as it clears up a bit to glass I think I'll see some deer.

I've heard there are a couple of lunkers out there.....

Pretty cloudy up high in those areas. Not much snow over night here in Wenatchee, not sure about up there but it stopped snowing around midnight here a few miles outside of town.

If you get stuck, need help getting a deer out, etc.. around Wenatchee Im normally free just about everyday and have a few buddies who wouldn't mind helping out either Im sure.

UPDATE:

Drove over Snoqualmie and Blewitt on Thursday night.....Went into Entiat but the fog was low so we had to stay up a little higher to stay above it.  It was beautiful and saw about 120 deer but nothing over 180'.  There was one "should I" moment with a 30' buck, uphill, broadside at 309 yards.  Easiest pack/shot you could ask for but he had really small forks........Pics were taken but it's up to the person who took them if they want to post.   ;)

Saturday was fogged in everywhere and then is started to dump around 1pm....

End of my weekend.

Heading out Saturday and not going home until Xmas or it's down!   Thanks for the support guys!

Keep After Them... you've got one hell of a tag there. I assume if you dont do it before Christmas you'll get back after them onthe 26th!!!!

Not sure if this question has been asked but here it is......

You're holding out for a trophy buck, however to many of us if we had that tag we'd already have it notched.  So with that, if you take it down to the last day and still do not see "the one" are you going to harvest a buck just to fill the tag or would you eat it and not settle on a buck that you have already passed up?  Probably hard to answer or maybe you already have your mind made up.  Just curious, I hope you dont even have to worry about it and knock one down next trip out.  Good luck.

Cougeyes:

I'm not necessarily holding out for a trophy buck but spending as much time as I can with buddies (old and new) and enjoying the moment.  Not many people can say they have hunted the Desert Unit let alone on five different occasions in the same season or head into the Entiat (last weekend) and not see any other hunters.  In this case we didn't see another person.......It's been a crazy ride that I hopefully can put into words when it all ends.

I have had the chance to talk to a lot of people who know more about Mule Deer than I could ever imagine.  ALL OF THEM have told me my hunting season really doesn't start until Dec. 1st......Trust me, it's enough to drive a guy nuts but I'm definitely seeing more bucks now than I did in Sept-Nov.

Would you have really notched the tag in Sept?  or before the rut?

To answer your question:

I haven't seen a buck larger than 185' and if I did I probably would have pulled the trigger.  However, I would rather harvest a 160-170' buck on the last day than to have shot a 175-180' buck up until this point.  However, from here on out it's going to get a little harder pass on those...... :bash:

Losing too much sleep!

Yeah i'm jealous of you right now.  No, i dont think i would have notched my tag in sept-nov either, but seeing the bucks that are posted on this thread..there is one in particular i dont think I personally could pass up, but that's just me and that's why i said i would probably have notched my tag.  If you have the time stick it out to the end it'll pay off.  We all live through you right now, good luck!

What about the buck that dropped those huge sheds in the orchard up there? Have you guys heard anything about him this year?
The one I am talking about I thinks someone bought them off of an orchard worker for a pack of smokes? I think thats the one anyways.

Cougeyes, I'm just kidding!

Let's hope the weather cooperates and we can see a little bit this weekend.  I just had the conversation with my wife last night that went something like this:

"Honey, if I don't see anything this weekend I might not be home until Xmas eve."

When she didn't respond I knew I was in deep sh*t......at least she didn't say "no"   :rockin:

Cougeyes, would you believe me if I told you?

One ticket......honestly.

I also drew a doe tag in the Olympic Unit but couldn't justify heading West when I had any free time.  When I was first notified of the drawing I was a Mule Deer rookie but I can honestly say I am doing my best to honor the Tag and do it justice.  I have relied on a lot of different people for help and it's amazing how much you learn talking and hunting with other people almost every day for four months.  It's the equivalent of hunting Mule Deer for 10 years and you can't replicate the knowledge of guys like videoman, wabonehunter, wastickslinger, 509er and a bunch of others that I don't even know if they are on this site.

Over the last month I have talked to the Governor's Tag guys each weekend.  We've shared stories, frustrations and insights along the way.  Like I said, this experience can't be replicated regardless of what the final buck scores......

Sorry rambling again.....Can't get this tag off my mind and looking forward to getting out again this weekend!

When this thing ends and I get permission from people it will be a crack up story if people are interested.

I'm glad that is the answer because i think i only bought two and it gives me hope (very slim) of drawing but it is nice to know that someone who just buys one is able to draw.

Yeah like i said earlier on this thread since you're a rookie at mule deer hunting it blows my mind you are able to keep your finger off the trigger as long as you have.  Keep at it. I heard the incentive tag holder shot one in the Entiat, but it wasn't that big only like 23" wide.
Title: Re: I'm a lucky SOB.......
Post by: GWP on December 14, 2010, 01:08:21 PM
Some years back I won a special permit for the Green River Watershed. I could take someone with me and I had company virtually everyday during the hunt. I saw deer every day, so did not worry about filling the tag when the time came. Well, the last two days I never saw one deer. NOT ONE! I still consider it a success though. What a blast to look at all four corners of an area not many people get to go into.

My son and I have seen lots of nice bucks in the last few weeks, but the difference is Brad had a tag in his pocket.  I can only imagine all the fun he had with that tag and the mule deer fanatics that helped him along the way.  There are a lot of us who enjoy viewing these great animals, so thank you for the pics.

That is a very fine Washington buck and was taken by a good fellow who did the tag justice along with some guy's who just love hunting and the outdoors.  Congrats. and it has been a pleasure following along in your adventure.  Again Awesome Buck Brad and Muley Fanatics.

I really love that buck.  I'll take a deer that carries its mass all the way through the entire rack, over one that may score better with longer skinnier points.  It is a personal preference but that is just about my perfect buck there.

I am not really too sure I would want this tag :)  The pressure is there even thoe you cant see it, the fact of trying to find the 1 is hard. We ( I mean every1 that was in on this hunt ) saw 350-450 deer in 2 days just too find that 1 buck. Its kinda hard to imagine all the bucks Brad saw before he got the op. on this buck, what a ride!  The average is 100 - 200 bucks for one trophy class buck, thats alot of bone.

What a great ending to a crazy ride and unbelievable story!

Before I start I need to give props and heartfelt thanks to the guys who helped me along the way.  Without their time, insight and resources this would not have happened but more importantly I wouldn't have made the friends I did over the last four months.

Josh Fitzhugh (wastickslinger) - I was referred to Josh by Jerrod Gibbons because the first weekend I wanted to get into the Desert Unit and he was a local guy Jerrod thought could get me around.  Although we didn't see a deer we probably talked on the phone 2-3 times a week from here on out.  Josh was the reason I got this buck and I'll never be able to repay him for his time and effort.  It's only fitting things started and ended with Josh.

Shad (antlerking) - He spotted the deer and told me a month ago "you will kill a deer on the weekend of Dec. 20th" if you can hold out.  Hell ya!.....that's what I was waiting for. :)

Vince (509er) - you still grinning?  I am.......

Derek Erdmann - Lifesaver

Michael Fox - Showed me a 30' and shared a ton of knowledge

Greenhaws (Joe, Brian and Martin)- Joe showed me a 180' buck in the Desert and Brian has been awesome even though he was on his hunt the entire time.  Thanks guys!

Ron Cearley
Rufus Olson

These are all the guys I spent time in the field with and trully appreciate it.  I could go on and on with the people I have spoken to on the phone and I thank you too!

Friday WaStickslinger, 509er and Antlerking headed over to Entiat.  I couldn’t make it because of a company Holiday Party so they were sending me updates and I planned to head over Saturday morning.  I left Issaquah at 4:30am after getting home from the party at 1:30am….not a great way to start an all day hunt!  The Adrenaline was kicking in though because these guys had seen a boat load of deer and a nice 4x4 with a couple kickers on Friday that might be a “shooter.”  I rolled into town on a thermos of coffee and we all jumped in and headed up the mountain on some sleds (four guys on three sleds).

We saw a nice 4x4 right off the bat but wanted to get to the top of the mountain before the snow arrived so we drove through a lot of deer.  It’s amazing to me there are so many deer you literally have to ignore them to get where you want to go or half the day will be gone before you get there.  We get up top about 10am or so and settle in to a spot and start to glass.  Right away Antlerking spots a buck worth checking out.  It was about a mile and a half away and we couldn’t put any points on it so we decided to pack up and begin to work that way.  It took us about an hour or so to get around to a ridge we thought was facing the buck.  It started snowing hard and we sat on this face looking for the buck but couldn’t spot him and argued about his location.  There was a 5x5 (and about 20 other bucks) and we were pretty sure it wasn’t the same buck we saw from afar.  Finally we pack up and decide to head a little farther…..

Within 5 minutes Antlerking kills the sled and jumps off and we know he has spotted the buck.  All of us get off and he points to him about 200 yds away bedded down.  All we can see is his head and antlers…..We all look at each other and say “shooter” immediately.  I run over to a stump and get all set up but he disappears into a little draw but we know he is going to come up the other side right at 250yds.  Right then six does come out of the draw with a 4x4 following them and I put my scope on it and say “is that him?”  509er yells, “no, he’s about to pop up and all I can see are horns!”  Right then he comes up behind the 4x4 and makes him look like a little dink and I knew right then this is the buck I wanted…..

These guys kept asking me “do you like him?  do you like him?”  I think I responded “I’m shootin’ him!”   250 yds away, quartering away and I pull the trigger……..He squats and I ask “did I hit him?”   Someone responds “maybe” and Antlerking says, “no, he’s taking a sh*t.”    Now he’s about 300 yds away just walking behind these does and 4x4 and I fire again…..MISS.  Fire again……MISS…..  I look at these guys dumbfounded.  I don’t even know WTF to say.  I’m a speechless.  Antlerking says let’s leave him alone and get out of here and go shoot that rifle.

We run the sleds back about a mile and get out a granola bar box and set it up 50 yds away (I have 9 shells left).  I fire three inches to the right……fire again….to the right.  We make the adjustment and stickslinger puts some duct tape on the box and says aim right for it.  Shoot again and it knocks the tape off. (6 shells left).  Then we take it back to a 100 yds and first shot is nine inches high….How?  I hand the rifle to Antlerking and say shoot it….maybe I’ve still got the shakes from the night before or seeing that deer!  He shoots it and its three inches low and to the left….four shells left and no freaking clue where the bullet is headed.  I was at the range on Thursday (swear to God)….I even sent Stickslinger a picture text because I was the only guy there in a pair of slacks.  It was dialed in.  What happened?

We’re trying to figure out what to do…It’s about 1pm and we don’t have time to run out of here and get back.  I called Derek and explained the situation.  He says, “let me smooth it over with the wife and I’ll call you back.”  For those that don’t know Derek, he just spent the last few months with Tony on the Governor’s Tag.  So, he hasn’t been home too much and I’m sure the wife wasn’t thrilled he was proposing going out again.  He calls me right back and says, I have a rifle and will be at the bottom of the hill in a half hour.  We’re about a half hour deep on sleds so Antlerking heads down the mountain to pick him up while we build a fire and wait……You guys ever been punched in the gut and had the wind knocked out of you?  That’s the way I’m feeling….I am so pissed off, queasy and disappointed all at the same time.  I felt like I let these guys down and I just wasted my chance at my buck.  It was the longest hour I have ever spent waiting in my life!

It’s about 2pm when these guys come rolling up on the sled and Derek hands me the rifle and says here you go.  I shoot it once and we were good to go!  We take off and all of sudden the fog rolls in and we can’t see 50 yds…..F*CK.  Luckily it only lasts about 15 minutes or so and we can finally see.  We head down into the canyon where we thought he was (Derek brought video so have it all on tape from here on out) and Antlerking spots him about 250 yds away.  The snow is about knee deep and it’s crunchy so we sound like a herd of elephants trying to get in the right spot.  We get all set up again and I’m breathing like a stuck pig!  I finally get settled down and hit him but he some how makes it to the top of the ridge below and skylines us.  I fire again and miss…..Over in the next draw he goes!

These guys are pretty excited and know he isn’t going far but I can’t even smile….I keep thinking what can go wrong now!  We hike down to the next knob and 509er spots him about 90 yds away bedded down in front of a massive pile of limbs.  He’s that close and I keep saying “are you sure that is him?”  I couldn’t even tell that close because his horns blended right in with the background.  We sat there for two minutes looking and getting all set up again….Last shot in the boilerplate and he lay right down.

I stood up and literally my legs were shaking so bad I couldn’t control them.  No words can describe the range of emotion going through my body…..It was an amazing experience that will last a life time.

We didn’t get off the mountain and all loaded up until about 10:30pm that night.  But, you should have seen the five of us, a deer and all of our gear on three sleds.  It’s a story in itself.

Wrapping up, I just want all of you to know I got the exact buck I wanted.  He is a stud and every time I look at him he has more and more character.  I hope we can preserve his ears because I think a Cat got him.  One ear is shredded, the other is torn and he has claw marks down his rib cage as well.  Not to mention his broken nose and missing teeth.  He is a warrior.

I don’t know what he scores and as I’ve told a few of you I could care less.  185’ or 190’ it really doesn’t matter to me.  I was sent pictures of bucks that may have scored higher with a lot of trash but to me personally they paled in comparison to this buck.  For curiosity sakes, three people have measured him and all were between 187-191.  I’m also proud of the fact we did all of this on public land.  We all worked our butts off and earned it.

But, I am one Lucky SOB……

WOW WOW and WOW.

Just amazing. That one will hit a magazine for sure, too good not to!

RaffleMule, when the emotions settle and you get back out to shoot that rifle, I'll be curious to know what you find out, weird stuff. I've heard similar things happening though it extreme conditions.

Anyway, congrats again. Cherish this one man, you bring the emotions out in what you write and you definitely did this tag justice!

Beautiful buck forsure.   So no one had ever seen this guy before or picked up any sheds from him?  The incline of the hill in the photo with antlerking looks like it must have been a fun pack out straight up, haha good times.

Hey Brad, I am still grinning, tired but grinning.  Thanks for letting me be part of your hunt, best hunt of my life so far.  Only thing I still cant figure out is how we let Shad shoot the rifle to verify accuracy.   :dunno:  I mean we dont call him Lightning for nothing.   :chuckle:  Here is my "hero" pic, now I know what it like to wrap my hands around a fresh set of big antlers.  I hope I got some good pics for you.  Thanks again Brad.

I can't wait to see them......Thanks for capturing it all on camera.  I am just about to leave to take him to the taxidermist but don't want him out my set yet.

Browngoingdown- Riding on the back of a sled with Stickslinger would definitely be considered "extreme conditions"

Cougeyes- No sheds have been found as far as we know.  After the fact a couple of people have claimed to have seen him but with no pics.  They certainly didn't tell Tony or I beforehand....... :dunno:

Well when I took my buck to the taxi and was looking forward to fondling the antlers that a lot of other guys killed on here, they had taken all their antlers home to show off(Ironhead!!!). So apparently you can take the antlers home with you till the taxi is ready for them.   :chuckle:

This  buck has it all. Mass, width extras. It has great character and will look awesome on the wall, a great story behind it as well. Congrats to all involved.

I know you don't care about score and neither would I on that deer, but I think your tapes a little high.   Some might critisize you later if you spout 190s.   Its probably a solid 180, or range 175-180.   AND no, I am not talking trash, as I think its absolutely an outstanding trophy.  Just keeping the numbers real.  Let us know if you officially score it.  180 is an AWESOME deer.

No hanging whatsoever.   Obviously scoring is a science. LOL and as I stated.  Doesn't matter a bit.  Just fun to hash and learn.   I think most folks don't have a clue what a 190 buck looks like, so its fun to talk about.

(what I mean by this is that once a deer is over 170 most think BOONER), especially on the hoof. Kinda like a 350 bull and a 380.   Who cares.....SHOOT

Sam, did you ever have yours measured officially?  I know you thought I lowballed yours as well.

A trophy deer is in the eye of the hunter not the score.  I have several "trophy" bucks, none over 150" but the stories that go along with them and the fun i had harvesting that animal is what makes it a trophy to me.  Scores created a whole new class of what is deemed a trophy animal.  So, a trophy animal really depends on who you ask.  With that said I would someday love to put both trophy categories into the same story and RaffleMule did just that, well deserved buck!

I was sent a photo of this buck before they got off the hill. I scored it at 189" and sent my brother a txt before they got back to the truck. I just like to have a competition with myself. It is always fun to try to guess a buck and then see how close your really are to the actual score. I am standing by my 189" txt until I see the true score. Raffle....I just wanted to say CONGRATULATIONS! I know a lot of people who think they are trophy hunters that will never shoot a buck as large as this one. You Rock! He is a true toad

If you're using "Quick Reply" you will have to click on "Preview" to get the "Additonal Options" button.

IF true, that's amazing the inches he lost over one year.  Losing a foot long inline is just crazy.  Especially with a great horn growth year.  He doesn't look like an old buck in the harvest photos.  Was he aged?

I would say it is the same buck.  The rack has a lot of the same characteristics.  Hard to tell in pictures but it looks like he added a little mass and tine length over last year.  It is not uncommon for bucks to not grow the same cheaters every year.

2506, what is the length of the main beam on that shed?

Good example. And no wonder 509er and I give you and Antlerking crap about not leaving any sheds for others. Oh I take that I back I see that you only have 7 of 8. Nice of you to leave one.  :chuckle:
:chuckle:  I saw him before he shed that year and that side was completely broke off about 2-3" above the eyeguard.  He did have a double eyeguard though.  I never could find that one!  :chuckle:
Title: Re: I'm a lucky SOB.......
Post by: Cougeyes on December 23, 2010, 09:04:37 PM
How about two ears wit same tear? Now Im really thinking. You know it would be even harder if brads buck showed no signs of abnormal point. His buck has an inline on the right and another inine on the right that broke. Its in that bucks genes to have extras. Kinda cool to see a buck change like that if he did. Makes me wonder about other bucks I have watched in same areas now.  :bash:

Here is the right ear mark.

Hmmm the same tear on the same ears on two bucks in the same general area two years apart, now i think its the same buck, especially after the antler changes that Lowe posted up, i never knew they could change so much.  I always figured cheaters and extra points were often retained in the same location on the antler consecutive years.

They came up with 179 2/8 plus 2 2/8 extra. 181 4/8 total gross. Not sure if that is all the way official or not yet.

Wouldn't this be official as they are official B&C scorers at that show?  Just a thought. :dunno:

Quote
Once a trophy has been officially measured there are a series of steps that need to be completed to insure the efficient and accurate processing of the trophy entry. The most obvious and basic item needed to enter a trophy is a fully completed, current, original score chart, signed and dated by an Official Measurer appointed by the Boone and Crockett Club. Photocopies of score charts, as well as incomplete score charts, are unacceptable. Entries submitted on Pope and Young Club score charts, or on outdated score charts, are also unacceptable. When an entry is not submitted on the correct (and properly completed) score chart, all other processing steps must wait until a correct and accurate original score chart is received.

ENTRY AFFIDAVIT
Another item of importance that must be submitted with each hunter-taken trophy is an original Entry Affidavit properly signed and witnessed. The correct Entry Affidavit is on the back of all current score charts.
The hunter’s signature on the Entry Affidavit needs to be notarized by a notary public, or witnessed by an Official Measurer. Once a trophy has been measured that makes the minimum score, the Official Measurer should give the trophy owner an opportunity to read the Entry Affidavit on the back of the score chart. Once the hunter is satisfied that he/she understands and meets all aspects of the Entry Affidavit, he/she should sign it in the presence of the Official Measurer who should then witness the hunter’s signature by signing and dating it in the spaces provided on the score chart.
Please note that the Official Measurer’s signature witnessing an Entry Affidavit on the back of the score chart is in addition to the Official Measurer’s signature on the score chart verifying his/her measurement. The Official Measurer must actually be present and see the hunter sign the Entry Affidavit before the measurer signs it, or the Entry Affidavit is unacceptable.

Generally if its going to "MAKE BOOK", they score it officially by an official member at the show.  If it will fall short, it still can be officially measured, but you obviously don't need to jump through the hoops of affidavits etc.  It can be submitted to the state etc if it is by an official registered measurer.  (PY and BC measurers count).

Im still confused. Dont you count the abnormal points in the Gross score? The sheet says 179 2/8 but does not include the 2 2/8 extra point. Wouldnt the total gross score be 181 4/8? Remeber I went to school in Omak be easy on me. I guess I have aways added all of it when I give you guys a total gross. Maybe I will have to clarify in the future.  :chuckle:

And Yes that is respectable.

I think it is the way B&C measures gross score.  That's why I like the SCI system better. :twocents:

I am sure that they still subtract the differences in the main frame then add the extra points for a Non Typical.
Title: Re: I'm a lucky SOB.......

He was scored as a typical because that is what he is.  Line E doesn't matter unless it is going to put you at the 215'' mark.  So his gross score as a typical would be lines 1-3 added which would give you your gross typical score. Subtract line 4 which are your differences and you get your final typical score.  You could say his gross non-typical score is 181 4/8 but since he will not make it as a NT it does not matter.  Yes you do get deductions in the NT category because they still measure it as a typical frame deduct the differences and then add line E.  Below is a picture of a buck that is not in the book because he will not hit the 215'' mark.  His " Gross NT score" as you would add it would be 199 5/8.  Yeah it sucks, but that is the way it is with B&C.  I wonder if MM wants an update as to the official score?  171'' is still a great buck!

For some guys its all about the score which is cool, while for others its a personal preference. I fall into that personal preference in that I like a heavy horned which might not carry much length, or non typical that doesn't necessarily have to score high. A palmated deer is very cool in my books. But to each is own.

Why don't you save yourself the headache and not just post scores?  It already gets confusing when there is 2 different scoring systems and then a third one gets thrown in that nobody else knows.  171 net and 179 gross is a great buck!

Better yet I will just stop posting pictures all together. I stated very clearly it was a rough score at 189 total NT before it was dry. Its 181 4/8 NT. Im not that far off. Not sure why all the flaming me. Kinda old. Never did I claim to be a profesional nor did I claim it to be a final perfect score. Everyone was hounding to know the score so we threw a tape on it and that was what we came up with several times. I fell into the whole internet drama and it will be the last time I do. I think I have been on here long enough for people to know I am not some pompus chest beating self proclaimed know it all. I scored the buck for the guy, so did another member and that is that. This crap gets real old.

Later(possibly for good-Im taking a time out) Not cause my feelings are hurt. I hve thick skin. But cause there are too many pricks on here.
I agree! back the f off! the majority of folks on here couldn't even find deer of this caliber and someone is getting crap for not being a cert. scorer! I could care less if the guy told me it was 387 1/8 or 76 7/8 I would still think it was a monster! BTFO

Slinger, just remember all that matters is that Brad is happy with it, the buck is a pig no matter the score.

Not a chance in hell that buck in that picture grosses 199 5/8!  Who came up with those numbers?!

The buck in your Picture really isn't 199 5/8 because it won't make the book as a non typical, and it definately isn't 199 5/8" typical.

I thought that you wanted to learn how to score?  So I took the time and explained how it is done, but apparently you did not want ot listen to what I had to say.  When you post something such as a score, don't you think that you would want to know how its done and explain weather it was B&C, SCI or whatever?  190,189,185,182,179 and 171, there is quite a few numbers there.  Yes, all that matters is you guys had a good hunt and that the hunter was happy with his buck. It was a stud.  Don't get your shorts in a knot, people like looking at the photos you share.

The buck in the pic was scored at the Puyallup show last year.  I measured it before it went down there and was 2/8 short of there score.  Obviously he does not make the book as typ or non-typ.
