Title: GMU 101 late Buck Mule Tag -Why not?
Post by: DuckDr.Duke on November 17, 2010, 03:17:34 PM
For years I have wonder why the WDFW doesn't have a late GMU 101 Buck Mule Deer Tag. Any thought? Why not create a low # permit GMU tag, more revenue.

They probably don't want the big muley bucks shot. Genetics I bet. When I first moved here 10 years ago, I hardly saw muleys at all. Now I see more muleys than whitetails it seems. Ya got me.

Only reason I can think of is that there's only two days they could have a permit season in that unit without overlapping a general season hunt.

Rifle deer goes to Oct. 29, rifle elk goes from Oct. 30-Nov.7, late archery whitetail deer starts Nov. 10.

That only leaves Nov. 8 & 9 for a permit season in that unit.   :dunno:

Why couldn't it overlap late archery whitetail?

It could, but I think they generally try to avoid overlapping rifle hunts and archery hunts, if possible. Do you know of any rifle permits that overlap with archery hunts?

agree why not have a small # of permits overlap? they use to do this in the 70's. I know times are different then the 70's, but a small # of Mule buck permits would be nice, I have seen some hogs in these areas in the last 10yrs or more.

I was over deer hunting 101 last weekend and saw the biggest mule deer I have ever seen with my own two eyes.  I counted 8 or 9 points on one side he was a gaint.  I wish I had a permit then.

The Sherman Pass area used to be considered one of the top place in Washington to take a really large mule deer. I remember national magazines having articles about the hunting there when I was a teenager. That's what got me to hunting it in the early 60's. The first mule deer buck I ever saw/shot was a 6 X 6, 27 1/2 inches wide. I can look over my shoulder as I write this, and still admire the horns.

This area is hunted when snow brings bucks down near the road by the Colville tribe. They won there hunting rights in 101 several years ago. I am guessing but that may be why they leave them alone, plus a much smaller population than what it used to be.

My grandfather has taken two really nice 4x4 Mule Bucks from 1980 & 81. My grandfather started hunting the 101 unit in 1954. Between him and our family friends they have taken some nice Muley's out of there. Great area. :)

D rock were you in a white dodge or ford with a camper on it?  Why not a late archery tag?  Ive seen way more mulies than whitetail the last 3 years in there.

Thought maybe I talked to you but guess not. I was down low to get away from the muleys most of the weekend. ended up seeing 3 Muley bucks and had a guy cutting wood say he had just seen a huge 5x5 muley too.
