Trying to decide what dog to get...Brittany, GSP...ect.....oh and the pics will help pursuading the gal...haha..Thanks!
-
Here's a setter I got that will be ready for a drop off to wherever along I-90 upon return from his second South Dakota trip the first week of December,I want nothing for him,he's a freebie,I would consider him a good beginning pointing dog owners first dog, not much range, lots of natural ability, this is a picture I snapped of him last year on point at 8 months old in South Dakota. He's been neutered due to an inherited defect of only one decended testicle.I killed a bunch of wild roosters over him(over 30),some penraised wetside release birds and some chukars in Yakima with him last year.He ain't my kind of dog for field trialing. The breeder has refunded my intial buy in due to the inherited defect and I'm on the hook for the neutering and hip X-rays which show Xcellent according to my vet with 20+ years experiance(I had it done while he was knocked out for the nut job).I'd just like for him to have a good home(not housebroke,I'm one of them evil kennel dog guys). His Breeding is Ch Tekoa Mountain Patriot X Southwind Sunset Rock(She is By Ch Alamance Little Rock and out of Cane creek Vada) Classic 11X CH Tekoa Mountain Sunrise linebreeding.
BTW that is a Garmin around his neck and the biggest cast in South Dakota where you can SEE the next time zone was..................................82 yards.I hunted him last week in Western Washington and it was on average 40 at a whopping 5 MPH

As compared to my Rocker and roller,Earth mover and shaker AKC field Champeen with an average range on the wetside of 250 yards,Eastside open ground 400+ of zero breeding...............I'm contemplating an ear punch 25,000$ cloning of this sucker....................His typical 2 HOUR run on the garmin is.........18 miles at 11 mph.

This picture was taken of our GSP and Lab combo on a North Dakota trip. Have to be prepared for a wide range of temperatures!
-
Heres my little Brit who isn't quite 2.5 years old yet. She finished her AKC Horseback Field Champion 2 weeks ago and I foot hunted her last weekend in Pennsylvania. Not too bad for a dog that weighs 30lbs soaking wet, but runs the same speed off horseback on the GPS as Wildweeds setter.

The 3 Kids and a bunch of feathers.
And Harley 1 tuckered out Cooke Canyon Pointing Lab.

Here's my little quailaholic.
-
509, That is a really nice looking dog. I don't hear about those very much.
-
My 5 year old English Pointer...Ive had Britts, Setters, and now a Pointer and he has sold me. The short hair makes for really easy maintenance in burrs, and also traps less snow between his pads. Very Very hardy, low maintenance dog.

Good looking dogs

Reputable breeders will not sell a German Longhair unless you are a bird hunter. They prefer that you run the dogs through trials.
There is a Longhair breeder in Yakima. This is my second longhair and I needed a dog in a hurry, so mine came from Michigan via Northwest Airlines. Nice dogs, live to hunt for the OWNER only. They are a one person dog. They can have seperation anxiety that rivals that of rat dogs.
Great pointers. Good retrievers. Excellent duck dogs. Carry a generator and electric clippers in the field!! That is a real downside.
They really need to hunt and run. They are not apartment dogs.

This is Ruby a red setter with my husband Larry and grandson. We try to take our grandson once a year on a warm day and stay out of the woods. This was a great day with 3 birds in the bag and easy walking for a 4 year old.

Okanogan, awesome place to hunt, but I never leave home without my Gerber for the cactus. Great looking dog, not sure I like the idea of having cactus that close to the eyes :bdid:, but the birds gotta be retrieved ;).

Zeke is the liver and white male, Dot is the black and white female.

Good looking dogs
What kind of dog is that? My fiance and I are trying to figure out what we are going to buy... My 840sqft house really doesn't do well for something as large as a lab :(
-
This is Rocky. Really a waterdog, but he'll do in a pinch... ;)
Hunting up in Colville earlier this year with my son and my nephew.
-

My last dog was a springer that was big and floppy like a clumber. How do clumbers hunt? Very methotical or do they get pretty hyper? My new dog is a very lean springer who just turned 7 months old. He is very fit and a great hunter so far. How much does a clumber cost? Under a grand?

If I started over with dogs,I would definitely do a GWP/Drathaar.
I love the GSP,but a GWP is a water dog too.
Side note.I saw one at the "Coliseum" outdoor show years back.Sat and played with the pup.
A year later I walked towards the booth and this dog sat there and waited for me like he knew me.He started watching me from about 50 yards away.
Not sure if it was the same dog,but it was strange
The breeders are a little strange also.
My girl doin some training

BAHAHHHAHHAHHAHhahahahHAHAHHA (gasps for breath) AAAHAHHAHAHBAHHHHAAAAAA :chuckle:
I was at a hunting dog training clinic in Ellensburg a few years back. Was a little bit worried since I was sure I'd have the only flushing breed... no worries though since another had a standard Poodle and he was by far the most interesting oddball there. Had a hellofa stylish point and birdiness like crazy. I used to work with the service dog training folks at Paws with a Cause in Grand Rapids, and we were all delighted when a Standard Poodle was in for training as they were by far the easiest and quickest learners. When I am too old to change my own drool cup and shawl, I plan to get a Standard Poodle to take care of me... I am damn sure the Clumbers will just roll me over by the cookie jar and leave me there....
-
Right on, Bluemoon, great pic. I showed that one to my wife because she loves poodles. I know one other guy that hunts with one.

Got's my fingers crossed that I'm going to get some replacement soldiers from these two on valentines day.

yep. i'm pretty confident that he'll be more than ready once the seaon comes around,.. i'm thinking about taking him out to a game farm or something.
my buddy that gave him to me is a proffesional trainer, and he did about 2 months of work with the dog before he gave him to me.
i did alot of work with him too,.. he's got all the commands down, he's woah trained, i got him to point on scent, and he holds point nice and strong. and will hold point easily for 3+ min.
so i'm really exited to get him out hunting sometime soon

Orca six,
Beautiful dog. What's the breeding?
-
Thank you very much.
She is a German Wire-haired Pointer. The sire used was from Dr. Aloysia Hard's stock. And the Dam used was from a friend of mine in Woodinville. She is a great dog, super friendly, great temperament, good around the house, superb hunter and she loves/lives to hunt.

This is my boy, Pappy. Oh, and Landon. It was 9 degrees and Landon was a super trooper. He was in the back seat chanting,"I like pheasant hunting!" When we were done. Pappy put up two birds before we even got to the field. This was at Cooke Canyon.

Your not that good at reading between the lines, Thurmanator is a variation of his name.............Larry Thurman, pro trainer who lives in Benton city and does hunt tests with pointing dogs, he and his wife have had weimeraners and Gsps for years and I beleive she is involved with the rescue portion of the weim club.

Everyone of you have beautiful and highly qualified hunting buddies! From the Springers and Brittneys to the Wirehair and GSP's to the English Springers and of course the Labs. I am partial to the Labs to be honest. They wont go like some of the breeds but they are a very well round dog. Wont live a day of my life without one!

My 7 year old English Setter, Boomer. Caught him doing this point last year which was different than his bird point but I had my camera and couldn't resist. He ranges pretty wide and I have to keep tabs on him in heavy brush, but if there is a bird around he will find it. Mostly use him for grouse. He's pointed up grouse I would have walked right by, all in a days work. even at 7 YO he will still hunt all day and be ready to go the next morning. Not sure how many more years he will be able to do that. Maybe in a few years he will calm down enough that I will be able to keep up with him.

My pup Mace. Only 369 days old and not much training. Worked like a pro. No hunting experience other than a few pigeons in the yard.
I took him out to Kosmos in the afternoon. 15 minutes into it he flushed a hen, but no shot. He then had 5 more in the next half hour, of which I finally connected on two.
What a natural! He was all business and showed no signs of boredom or tiring. I think I'll keep him! :chuckle:
-
This is Rocky. Not sure what breed he is, we're thinking Shorthair and maybe Chesapeake. I got him as a rescue dog 3 years ago. He is crazy about birds and any type of retrieving. He really came on strong last year with pheasants and found 3 wounded birds that would have been lost.
-
My 13 week old Brittany Cant wait till next yr!!!

Great looking Brit, male or female?

Female, should be fun next year

This will be my upland and waterfowl dog. I just picked her up Sunday. She is a 10 month old yellow lab named gauge originally but I think we are going to change it to sage. She is green to hunting and guns so this year will be a training year for her.

Close but no cigar...they're GWP's. gaining weight at approximately 10 onces every three days...absolutely amazing. I have to trim their nails every other day. 15 is a MAJOR logistic nightmare...keeping Mom from abandoning the ship, and keeping her weight up. We thought maybe 8 pups max...never, ever, thought 15 was possible.

My 12 yr old male setter, he can still hunt sun up to sun down.
Love setters. Had Red Setters years ago...the small, twelve o'clock tail type. You picture particularly takes me back to my favorite old male and all the memories he gave me. A bird finding machine. Great photo.

Georgia Ski, she's a good one to be around.

Dude my 6 month old GSP on his second training hunt with released birds. 5 birds, 5points, 5 retrieves, not a bad day. This is my fourth GSP and they are my preferred breed.
-
Here is my 7yr lab Myah. She loves to hunt both upland and waterfowl.

Here's a tired dog....

Rosey the last female wirehair from our litter of 15...she's awesome. Desparately needing a home though. She has one brother that is shorter haired, he's got wire on his face, but interestingly has short hair and has not been chosen by the masses. From out litter, we sold 12 by word of mouth alone...everyone has stayed in contact and are having fantastic experiences with their pups. This was a one-time deal for us, we got Mamma fixed two weeks ago...we breed this time for friends and family, it was a great experience for the kids, but we're ready to have the last two pups find their families. I wish I could have kept them all, it was more fun than should be legal.

Know exactly what your talking about,I had setter pups,9 of them, tested the parents in the field with a shotgun and at field trials with a blank gun, big time winners of both consistantly,I've got 5 left and am keeping 2.A kick in the pants to raise even though it's a ton of work.Mine are coming on 6 months old and have been showed birds and shot over.

Here is my English Springer mutt. She is a better therapy dog than a bird dog but she does have some point in her. She is 6 now and I would like to train her for the bird but I can't commit the time.

more evidence to support my earlier statement... behind every big pile of dead critters there is usually a springer... or in this case two. well done!
