so I have been thinking about getting a .22 for some time now and was wondering what is good for the money and what is just an all around good accurate gun.
-
welcome to the site! the ruger 10/22 is probably the most popular 22 around. very accurate little gun. they are around 190-230 you can find them on sale from time to time. they are the best bang for the buck in my mind.
-
I have been using a Ruger 77/22 and it is pretty accurate. I finish shooting a target by shooting the staples to take it down. Not sure of the price, I picked it up used.
-
I have a marlin 60 tube fed that is super accurate 21in barrel. But you have to load them into the tube so either you put 1 bullet straight in the chamber or pull the tube out and load more than one. If you only need 1 shot like for a grouse then good, but plinking is not as fun. My Ruger 10/22 is pretty nice because its clip fed and of course I have the 50 round clips so plinking is a blast with it. Ruger has all kinds of mods and they are everywhere I would get the ruger.
-
Marlin Micro Groove barrels -- All the Way! I have a Model 60 and four or five older Marlins, 50's vintage, they are all tack drivers! The 60's are hard to clean IMO but good guns.
-
I am thinking one of these three. what are your guys thoughts?

All good choices. For peak accuracy, go with the bolt IMHO. However, I have both the Rem. bolt and the 10-22. I'll grab the 10-22 90% of the time, just more fun to shoot, and the accuracy diff is negligible.
-
Go with the 10/22 they are like a 57 Chev they are a classic and lots of add ons for customization later on down the road if you want to really trick your gun out
-
anybody know anything about the cricketts?
-
Yup, my 10/22 is the goto plinker,
You can get them for $200 nowadays for the base model, which are accurate, but with a few small inexpensive improvements (barrel/scope/...possibly trigger assy) they can be amazingly accurate. My dad just bought the walnut version 2 weeks ago and loves it
:twocents:
[edit]
..never heard of this 'crickett'...
-
My son loves his 10/22. Fun gun and accurate. I still prefer my model 61.
-
I have a Remington 552 Speedmaster that was built in 1957.
The Model 552 BDL Speedmaster is the only American-made 22 autoloader that handles 22 short, 22 long, and 22 long-rifle cartridges interchangeably. Like its pump-action counterpart, it features adjustable big-game sights, positive cross-bolt safety and grooved receiver for scope mounts.
I have a 3-9x40 scope on it and it will shoot very tight groups at 100yds and beyond. My dad bought it when I was about 6 from the neighbor for $50. My kids love shooting it.
-
anybody know anything about the cricketts?
My son has one, he is nine and ready for something a bit biggger. I'm not sure how young of a hunter you are, but I bet you would get tired of the single shot real quick.
-
CZ is the most accurate rifle you will find for the money. sharp looking too.
-
I'll agree on the CZ! But, for the price, you can't beat the savages or stevens. I think the CZ's are around 300, you could get a stevens for about half that.
-
Ditto what Wanttohuntmore said. CZ's are accurate and pretty, also pretty pricey. Besides, who wants a .22 that you are afraid to scratch or take out in the rain? IMHO, Savage makes the best out-of-the-box barrels there are, and the ones with the black composite stocks are real workhorses. Not to mention very affordable.
PS, My first 22 was a J.C. Higgins bolt action rifle, made by Marlin. Still super accurate today (over 50 years later).
I don't think you'd be happy with a cricket. It's a kiddie gun. I'm assuming you are over 7 years old. ;)
-
yeah I am sixteen, i am just lookin for somthing that is very affordable and accurate. it will probably be mainly used mainly for target and the occasional yote and coon.
-
you might check your local stores around black friday. they might have some killer deals going on a few guns. i looked at a few sporting goods stores that had some great prices on 22's
-
If I was to go buy my teenaged sons a 22 rifle as a plinker and absolutely fun gun to shoot and modify, I'd go to the pawn shops and find an older used Ruger 10-22. The new models have too many plastic parts.

-
now i am starting to lean towards the remington, has anyone had any luck with them.
-
How about a .17hmr, bought my son one last year for christmas. Fun to shoot and really accurite, good for some larger varmits too.
-
I kinda wanna stay with a .22 just cause ammo is cheaper and they seem to be a little outta my pricerange.
-
I sold my Remington single shot .22 LR rifle (and a few other guns) when we first got married. Wouldn't mind having it back! :bash:
Now have a Ruger 10/22 and it is very reliable, accurate and handy to get in and out the truck wihile cruising the backroads for blues.
-
check out walmart they had a marlin bolt action for $130 but that was here in the midwest
-
10/22 or the the 22 mag 10 /22. little more for the mag but i think its worth it. they dont make em any more but worth it if you find one.
-
The 10/22 is hard to beat for fun, accuracy, and reliability. The savage bolt action I mentioned above is at Walmart for $127 and would probably be more accurate and would last you a lifetime. I'm not sure what 10/22's are going for today, but I would suspect around $200? I remember when they were less than $130.
-
Ruger 10/22 without question.
-
Get a 22 mag and not a 22 long rifle. You can do more with the 22 mag. Kill coyotes and bobcats out to a 100 yards easy. I have one and use it all the time. I have the 10-22 Ruger and never use it.
-
I have the savage mark 2 tactical like this....http://www.wildlifehunters.com/savagemarkiitrreview.htm (http://www.wildlifehunters.com/savagemarkiitrreview.htm)
the 10/22 and a few older rifles that are more collector then practical for what you are looking for. the 10/22 is a ton of fun and easy to burn ammo with. my mk2 has a turret on it and I have made repeatable coffee can sized hits to 300yds.......but tof is forever....lol. the 10/22 could do the same, but it would kill the handling of that rifle.
-
Ruger 10/22 for sure - $175 walnut stock blue barrel at Dj's in Bothell - 195 stainless & composite. Bought one of each for my boys.
-
Oh oops - I guess wenatchee is a bit far away from bothell. Guess the gas money would offset the price a bit!
-
I got this one here http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/manufacturers_id/73/products_id/24150 (http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/manufacturers_id/73/products_id/24150) that little thing is just stupid accurate, I used to shoot 12ga shells at 100 yards with it but last time out we were popping 410ga shells at about 125 yards as the 12ga shells I had nearly a 100% hit ratio on. I did change out the scope for a 3-9x40 and that was the real difference as before I just couldn't find those little 410 shells at that range with the 4x that came with the rifle. A bit more money for this gun but it's by far the most accurate 22 I've ever shot.
-
i sure like my TC encore 22 lr heavy barrel. VERY accurate even with a cheep tasco scope. kind of spendy for a plinker, but to me it was worth it. i also have a marlin 60, real fun rifle. but if it comes down to putting grouse on the table, the TC is my choice. no tube, no clip.
