I have a Mossberg 500 with a fully rifled barrel. i can mount a 3-9 power scope on it. it is chambered for 12 gauge 2 3/4 and 3 inch shells. with many slugs now for deer have enough energy to kill past 200 yards and accuracy is still at 3-4 inch groups. for elk i am pretty sure if you used 3 inch shells with a hard enough bullet that you could take an elk effectively and 150 yards. that would be my max range for a rifle and i wouldnt have to take a longer shot. would this be a good idea? because your using a 63 caliber bullet compared to a 30 cal bullet. what would be some good bullets to try out. they would have to be 3 inch. so far i have been thinking of winchester platinum tips? any tips appresciated hunting sioxon gmu and that general area next year
thanks

winchester makes the xp3 slugs. the xp3 line up of bullets is fantastic. i would look into those or the Remington green tipped slugs. think they are called aero tips? but the xp3 would be my choice. more then enough to take a elk at a reasonable range.

that's probably right :chuckle: not much of a slug guy. have watched there adds for them and they seem to do great. but the xp3 would still be #1 on my list.

The Winchester XP3 would be my choice. I tried 4 different brands of slugs last year including the Remington green tips and these shot the tightest groups out of my Mossberg. My son dropped a big Iowa whitetail at 185 yards with one. Perfect mushroom. 2100 fps, 300 grains sabot slug. Awesome.

I use the xp3 slugs with my TC Prohunter. I've killed 3 deer with that combo and would have no problem using it on elk, or bear for that matter. Makes a nice 1 in entrance hole and a fist sized hole though the opposite rib cage. If they don't drop in their tracks, they leave a short, massive blood trail. Mark
