Well we got it done. Day 3 we killed the 1st buck we saw. I gotta keep this short as I came home to pick my wife and kid up and we're headed back to Pomeroy in an hour or so. BC Chaser has more pics and he can add whatever he wants to this. We had a really tough hunt and I was starting to get discouraged. It was snowing sideways, socked in with fog and there was a ton of trees blown down blocking the 46 road and the Tucannon road. We cut and pulled about 10 trees off of the Tucannon road to get down to Meadow Creek. We didn't see squat down there.
On day 3 Monday we woke up to snow and wind. We ended up deciding to head to the upper area of the unit where we had seen a bunch of deer sign the day before. We ended up having to chain up BC's truck to make it up there. Got up there and it was socked in with fog and snowing sideways. We looked around for a while and decided it wasn't worth wasting fuel so we turned around to head back to camp. We decided to turn off onto a spur road and we saw a muley doe standing on the side of that spur road. Then out popped my buck. I jumped out of the truck, got a rest and dumped him in his tracks. Sorry I don't have a glamorous 300 yard stalk to the finishing shot but after not seeing any bucks for 3 days I couldn't walk away from this guy. He goes just shy of 150" and is by far my biggest muke deer to date. I would like to thank everyone who helped me out and offered me good luck wishes. Especially BC Chaser Drew and Bushbeater Dave.
Thanks fellas.
This was day 1...the only clear skies we saw.

We took a lot more pics but I gotta roll...another long drive ahead of me.

That looks like a really OLD buck. Were his teeth worn down to nothing?
Sorry you didn't have better hunting conditions. The snow and wind sure can make it tough.
-

-
Congrats on the great buck!

Nice looking buck, I have spent plenty of time in that country too. The weather can get down right nasty, glad you made it out safe.
-
 NICE Buck Jackelope. congrats.
-
Way to get it done. Way to stick it out. I bet with the weather like that you have some pretty good stories. Looks like you earned that buck for sure. I like to see people on this site come together a help out on hunts like this. Way to go guys
-
great job Josh! I too am sorry about the conditions but it looks like you did fine

Awesome, good buck and it sounds like a great adventure as well.

Congrats! Good buck, and it sounds like an adventurous hunt.
-
Very nice, you'll sure remember this one!
-
Great looking buck Jackelope, congrats!
-
Good job... Did you skin him yet?
;)
-
Congratulations to you again Josh. Since the week the back door results had been out this journey had been a rough one for Josh. Snow has not been his friend. Another neat thing that happend is where this hunt ended it began only a couple hundred yards away. We litterally parked where Josh had shot his buck only 2 days earlier to hike out and glass the canyons. I know a lot of you will be upset about how it went down, but the best place to shoot a big buck is where he is at and he just happend to be on the road. We got lucky. Mother nature was definitely against us and if Josh had not shot his buck when he did I know we would have never been able to get back in there without a snowmobile. Thanks again to Dave as well as to Magnum our camp dog.
-
Is there any lower country to hunt in this unit?
-
Great pics!
-
Congrats Josh - you deserved him!!!

:P Hell, anyone that says that they wouldn't have dropped the hammer on that buck in those conditions is just lying to themselves! I'd have dropped the hammer if it were sunny and 70...LOL.
Again, great buck bud!!! VERY COOL!
-
Way to go Josh, It looks like some darn tough conditions. Beautiful buck and memories for a life time.
-
Great buck! Very glad all worked out for you! Nice shot placement! What kind of rifle were you shooting?
-
I'd rather have done it the way you did it than the way I did it last night. :yike: Congrats on your best Muley. Its certainly a trophy. Great field photos too. I'm glad you guys had a safe trip.
-
What did you do lastnight Bone? :dunno:
-
COngrats Man! That's a great blues buck! I wouldn't have passed either...
-
Great buck! congrats on a successful hunt! Thanks for the pics! Drive safe, heading back over to pomeroy.
-
Nice job Josh! Wish you could have seen more bucks, but you made the best of it. It will look good up on the wall!
MS
-
Nice buck !!! I would have dropped him in a heartbeat, and then SAID it was a "glamorous 300 yard stalk to the finishing shot" :P J/K well done.
-
Congrats on the buck. I think I would have passed, he's got a missing brow tine. Seriously I would have shot him in a heartbeat and not thought twice about it.
Be careful on the way back roads are compact snow and ice. It's colder than a well diggers butt. It's warmed up to 15 from -5 this morning.
Once again congrats on the nice buck.
-
Congrats on a nice buck!
-
Congratulation's Josh.
-
COngrats again on the well deserved buck! That will be a hunt to remember, wish I coulda been there.
-
Nice looking deer Josh. :whoo:
-
Boom and Flop - doesn't get any better than that!! :bfg: :rockin: :brew:
Great buck Jackalope!! It always looks more fun sitting in front of the fire looking at your pictures online then it does actually being there (cold, wet, discouraged) but way to go man! Very cool and an experience you can look back on for a long time! Congrats! Michael
-
Did you get that delivered to Charlies before you headed back for Turkey?
-
Good job. That is a really nice looking buck. Very symmetrical too....looks like he just needs that other eye guard to make him perfectly symmetrical. 8)
-
Thanks for all the kind words.
To answer a few questions...
I shoot a T/C Encore in .300winmag. The shot placement was a little off but it worked well.
Bone-
the head and cape is in the freezer. I think we're headed to Chazz's place sunday.
-
I was thinking about you down there. NASTY dang conditions
-
-
Nice buck Josh!
-
Congrats!
-
I Finally got back on here , I was out in the crappy snow hunting blacktails and a cougar yesterday. All I can say is snow sucks :chuckle:
Congrats on the dandy buck josh, glad to see you killed a dandy!! Maybee I will put in for that tag ;)
-
That's a great buck! You took advantage of your one opportunity in those less than ideal conditions. I know I would've shot that buck no matter what. You made it happen and that's all that matters. Great job man.
-
Congrats Josh, nice buck, glad you were able to seal the deal and still be with family on Thanksgiving. :brew:
-
I am glad it worked out for you.. Great job.
-
Congrats on a fine lookin Buck. It'll look good on the wall. :rockin:
-
Great looking buck. I saw the pictures the other day and was too sick to respond. It looks like you earned it. Way to go.
-
Good job Josh. Glad to see the armchair trophy hunters are keeping it to themselves for once.
-
cool pics and buck..
-
That is a great buck! The big bucks are where you find them sometimes next to a road sometimes at the bottom of a deep canyon either way it's a great deer with great memory's to go along with it I'm sure.
-
Congrats, that's got be be some pressure off a guys back...... :)
-
Nice buck! Glad you were able to get it done. Congrats
-
Very nice buck, Congrats :IBCOOL:
-
Awsome! sounds like you had a decent time over there!
-
Thanks for all the kind words again. It was really cool to be the only tag holder and the first guys to hunt this late permit in this unit. Hopefully there will be plenty more success stories from this unit in the future.
Here's a few more pics.

Love that last photo, I think it was the last. Pale winter sky with the low sun. Nothing beats a beautiful cold winter day.
-
Great write up, thanks for sharing. What were the temps? I see your shooting a Thompson Center, what caliber was it?
-
very cool - glad it all worked out on a great buck
-
Congrats on a nice buck!! Looks a little cold out there!!
-
Great write up, thanks for sharing. What were the temps? I see your shooting a Thompson Center, what caliber was it?
Friday 11/19 when I got there it was 30 or so with a little flurries here and there. Saturday stayed the same, sunny and warmish. Sunday afternoon the weather started going downhill....fog, snow, etc. Monday was the day we got the buck and it was 15-20 degrees or so with sideways snow and fog and when we broke camp on Tuesday morning I think the low I saw on the thermometer in my truck on the way out was 6 degrees. It was really really nice to have the wall tent with the stove to keep it nice and warm at night.
The rifle is a T/C Encore in 300 winchester magnum. It punched a nice hole in his spine and put him down in his tracks.
My buck made it to Charlie's today to have a nice euro mount made. At some point I may have a shoulder mount done so the cape is getting tanned as well.
Thanks again for all the kind words.
-
Is there any lower country to hunt in this unit?
There is but few to no mule deer migrate there, at least not this early in the year. Plenty of whitetails, but no muleys.
-
A euro will look sweet! Plus you won't have to wait for Charlies 2 year turn around for a shoulder :chuckle: Good idea keeping the cape too if you change your mind down the road.

Good job again that guy is HUGE!!!!!!
:yike:

Another epic 13 year thread resurrection.
12 years and 1 donated cape later, I decided it was time to get my buck mounted. This old geezer(the deer) deserved to be forever preserved. Wildlife Obsessions in Duvall did a great job getting him mounted up. Thanks to my buddy for giving me a cape after the original cape vanished in the 2011 tannery debacle. Some of you possibly experienced the same rigamarole. Anyway. Here he is.

I’ll add that it’s nice to see the names of some of the OG hunt wa crew in this thread.
-
Awesome deer! Thanks for digging it up!
-
Lot of guys who aren't on here anymore in this thread. For some reason I missed it all those years ago, when I clicked on it just now, it took me to the part where you "got it done" I have heard pieces and parts over the years but somehow missed the full story. Where did Rasbo go? :dunno:
Good job getting him finished up.
-
Turned out great Josh, and a stud buck for that unit, not a easy hunt at all!!!
-
Great buck and great story.
What is it with you and bad weather with special permits. Reminds of your goat hunt.
Beautiful mount, thanks for reviving the thread with the pics of him on the wall.
-
He turned out awesome Josh! Congrats again on a unicorn of the blues.
-
He turned out awesome Josh! Congrats again on a unicorn of the blues.
That's what I call spike elk during the season, Blue Mountain Unicorns, lol. Applies to deer as well though. Nice buck, looks great! Especially the area and private-public overlay.
-
Great mount and buck!!
-
Awesome mount!!
-
Stud buck for that area!
-
That’s a stud buck for ANY area! Congrats jackelope on the success, the memories, and, to top it off, the mount looks great!
-
Mount looks great! Glad you got him done. I've been on receiving end of getting the wrong cape back. Not fun.
-
He looks great Josh, do the memories come flooding back every time you look at him? Congrats once again.

I have one of the late Wenaha tags and this is giving me inspiration and hope!
Awesome buck

Turned out great!
-
Glad I finally got to read this old thread! Great deer and a hard hunt. The mount looks great. You mentioned you had him as a euro, any pics of that? Love the skull mounts as well.
-
