.....to shoot a deer in September next year. That was frickin nasty, and whomever asked me to tell them how that went, I'd say I survived but it wasn't exactly Club Med. I got a decent buck. I dumped my pack when I spotted on him. He had a doe but only seemed moderatly interested in her. I swung around and dropped in on them. I got on him right at dark. I got a good shot on him with the New Sapphire hawk. I slipped away to go get my pack and then went after him. I was very careful to not get sweaty climbing the hill. The temp was plummeting. I'm guessing about 10 inches of snow or so to fumble with. It was now after dark but the bloodtrail was obviously easy to find. He went about 80 yards or so before he went down. Yet further in the hole, got a fire going and froze to death taking care of him. Bigger the fire the better. I worked on boning him out fireside. I contemplated heading back to the truck but I had all the gear I needed so I stayed put. I figured as cold as it was it would be easier to cut him up warm and there was NO WAY I'd get him out otherwise. MORE WOOD, MORE WOOD. No need to worry about spoiIlage. The bag of meat froze solid I swear. You guys are out of luck for field photos. I was too busy trying to stay warm to mess with them, and when I went to take some this morning the cold had zapped the battery. I ate a granola bar for breakfast and off the mountain I went. Now I am home. I'm still cold. I am pretty sure I photgraphed this buck last year. He looks almost identical anyway and it was in the same area. I haven't stretched a tape yet but think he is about 26.

You know I'm claustrophobic. LOL
It was a 4x4 plus eyeguards, or one eyeguard and a bump. I'm guessing 160ish

SWEET buck and GREAT story :rockin:
-
Do you any of last years deer compared to one taken this year of the same buck?
-
You lost me(these are last years pics) None from this year
-
Pretty much identical. Little more width, mass, and a little bigger eyeguard.
-
I see I was thinking that this was this years pics before death come upon him.
-
No, I left the big camera behind. Too much hassle to fumble with. I should have borrowed the kids little pocket camera but it doesn't have a self timer. Might be time to beg for soemthing for Christmas.
-
Thats what I carry in my pocket. But I am in the market for a new one after going out last weekend and I went to take a pic and poof the flash shorted on my Sony now its a daylight camera. Anyway congrats on a nice buck!!
-
Congrats bone.....way to work for it. Shoot one in sept. next year? I don't think so.......you will pass and hunt the late season....you know you will. :chuckle:

Should I tell her about the meat chunk she just got on her sweater?

Nice job Bone!
Dang, that girl is growing up...
-
Nice Job Bone.
Can you imagine what the animals are feeling like in this weather! I can't believe you sleep out in this. Do you let your wife know you will be staying, or does she find out in the morning?
-
Hey Bone, very nice buck! I've been admiring your photography and stories on here for over a year now. I love all the pics you get...and nice bucks you kill. Congrats on another fine specimen.
-
Good Buck..........but wow, you bagged on Nevada in the ruby mts????......what gives?
-
money, time committment, family issues etc., plus I was having fun here
-
Great buck Bone! Glad you made it off the hill ok. Whole new respect for your skill as a hunter, I ran around the last 4 days in the swakane and manson units and could not get close enough for a compound. Could not imagine getting it done with a traditional bow.
-
Great job on a hell of a buck man!
-
Thanks everyone. I wish he had been as big as some that I had photographed this fall, but it was still a great hunt and thats what its all about. If you can't tell I love adventure.
-
Beauitful buck. Awsome....
Mulehunter
-
Doug, great hunt and bounty, congrats.
When snowshoeing and overnighting, I keep the camera batteries in a ziploc bag in close like near your undies.... Take it out and shoot some pics, then put it back... ( Brrrr....) Our video gear auto shuts down when too cold, so I end up relying on the trusty point and shoot...
-
It amazed me how fast it zapped the battery. It was below zero I guess....
-
Great buck! That sounded like a true adventure! What day did you get him? Were you out overnight in the blizzard?
-
It amazed me how fast it zapped the battery. It was below zero I guess....
You da' man!

Good Buck..........but wow, you bagged on Nevada in the ruby mts????......what gives?

-

Yowza ! Is what I shouted when I stuffed my frozen little camera down my shorts Friday to warm it up for pics of my sons buck. Worked like a champ after five minutes. Woke me up too !
-
Awsome story bone, and great lookin girl. I'm still working on this Alta tag. Tough going.
-
Congrats Bone on another well deserved Trad kill! I guess hunting in a loin cloth is out during the late hunt? :chuckle: What kind of gear do you pack on you for staying out in this mess? I figure a 0 degree bag, and some sort of tarp? Do you usually drop the gear, hunt a basin or area, then pick up later?
-
I have the -30 bag from cabelas. Its not the lightest but its necessary. I also pack my thermarest and a tarp. Usually a couple snickers for fast fuel, and some jerky to chew on. Extra set of gloves and wool socks in a ziplock. I usually have some sort of stocking cap for nighttime or when I am hunkering. Depending on the outing I'll also pack an extra shirt in case my other gets sweaty. SWEAT KILLS. I have vaseline cotton balls for a fire starter, and no less than three lighters on me. Usually one with the socks or gloves, one in the pants pocket and one in the coat.
Yes, I will secure my pack when I spot an animal and do a stalk or I'm covering a spot I want to be extra quiet in. Otherwise its usually pretty close.
-
Way to go Doug! @ mile pack alone in the snow!! :dunno: :dunno:.I'll stick to the between the road hunts thanks.Great buck , and the guys are right LIL Bone got tall!!
