Title: Remington 788
Post by: Jason on November 27, 2010, 01:58:11 PM
Just picked up a rem 788 .308 off of Ifish, my first hunting rifle was a 788 .308 and sold it when I was just out of high school  :bash:, only gun I regretted getting rid of, thats why I bought this one. Gun is pretty good shape blueing wise maybe a 9 out of 10, but the stock needs to be refinished, no deep scratches, just finish wearing off, not sure if I'll refinish the wood stock, I might put a Ram-Line on it.
anybody else have a 788?

Yep, got my Grandfathers 22-250 when he passed away in 96. He bought the rifle in the late 60's or early 70's to kill yotes on the farm.  Love the gun !

Remington quit making the 788 because it was 1/2 the cost of the mod. 700 and the 788 shot as well or better.

I got one from a freind, traded work for it, its in 308 I love it. Its easy to pack, magazine fed so its quick in and out of the vehicle. short, light and accurate. Its not very pretty but its beauty lies in its utility.

Well my 788 is looking alot better! first thing I did was glass bed the action  :yike: actually it was really easy, next I stripped the stock down to bare wood, fixed a couple of chips in the wood, used a varathane wood stain to stain it, then I used sealer & filler, after that I puts two coats of Tru-Oil finish on it using steel wool between coats.

I'm going to Wholesale Sports and Fishermans to see if I can find a scope rail and some better rings after lunch.
hopefully they have something  :dunno:, and I'm stealing the Bushnell 3200 off my 10/22.

Nice,  I have a 788 in .308 as well, its sort of clubby, chunky and different..but shoots like a house on fire.  ACCURATE.  I need to do something like that with mine as well.

Nice rifle!

I've got one in 6mm......my first big game rifle.
Ya, the factory finish is a little ugly. I refinished mine years ago.

It's a super accurate gun...I've shot yotes, deer, bear and pronghorn with it..

I made a perfect 260 yd shot on a black bear a few years ago with that pea shooter....
I love that gun.

Finally put a scope on my 788
I added a Redfield one piece scope rail, Leupold rings and topped it off with a Burris Fullfield II scope

Nice looking rifle. Love the 788. My dad and I both have 788's in .308. It was my first hunting rifle 24 years ago and I took my a nubbin blacktail with it that first year. My dad has the carbine also and has redone his stock. Mine has the 22" barrel with a monte carlo stock. Shoots like a bandit, although since I haven't had time to shoot it this year I will be borrowing my old mans 788 to go after whitetails in NE WA.

Yep, mine has the same problem, I didn't know if was from the low rings or not, but it doesn't do it ejecting live rounds.

i have tried low rings and high rings. still happens. it mostly sits in the safe now.
