What are the rules? The rules page is being updated the last two days I have tried. Is it like NASTRA or do they have to be steady to wing, shot, and fall? Are the retrieves judged, etc.?
-
it is not a judged event like NAVDA it is timed, you have 15 mins in singles (1 dog 1 hunter)and 20 in doubles (1 dog 2 hunters) they plant 3 birds, pointers have to point the bird for a minimum of 3 seconds during which time the hunter and the dog can not move, hunter then flushes the bird and hopefully shoots it, dog retrieves it to within 1 step of the hunter. then your off to the next bird, as soon as your dog produces 3 birds ur time stops or as soon as you have all 3 birds in your bag it stops. you get points for time remaining, pointed birds, full retrieve, or partial retrieve, and bagged birds.
same rules for the flushers only they don't have to point and they can trap/catch the birds where the pointers are penalized for traped/caught birds. it is very easy to pick up and a lot of fun. there are guys that have dogs that are steady but it's not required at all in fact it takes them longer to retrieve so almost better to have a dog that isn't steady. hope this helps, best thing to do would be to come to the fun day in march, u can tag along with a member to watch how it's done or have one walk with you and talk you through it. we all want to win but we have a lot of fun too. they have a camping area so a lot of the guys come down on Saturday for practice and camp out.

Sounds like fun. Its just like the Bird Dog Challenge that was on TV it sounds like. My dog is steady through the fall so that would hurt her but it would be a lot of fun. I am thinking about doing some NASTRA events after the hunting season is over also.

NSTRA is a fun deal..............I am new to it and haven't run my dog yet but I have run other peoples dogs and its a good time.
You really have to keep training and keep on your dog though because they get competetive too and can start rippin birds!

it is exactly like the bird dog challenge, we where affiliated with the same organization but there fees are getting to high so this next year we will be our own organization

Is it still owned by Dan Stoijka? His story is an interesting one. The show was fun to watch but I thought the dog work was sloppy.
-
yeah Stojka still runs it. the dog work can be sloppy but thats what is kinda nice about the tournament format anyone can play, you don't have to have a perfect dog.
