not much of a avid shed hunter so I thought you guys would know when moose start shedding their antlers?
-
Saw good bull about a week ago and also a paddelhead, but I'd say better get ready.
-
mid january
-
I am trying to remember who shot the moose in late Oct (?) that had dropped, or was it Nov. ?
-
I will see a few hit the ground in mid to late december, but most will be in january. oct/nov would be rutting moose, was it a drop of broke off?
-
I saw 2 this weekend that were carrying one side.

I checked and it actually was shot on the last day of the season, Nov. 30th (?) http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,12363.285.html (http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,12363.285.html) picture Pg 30

I believe a few are already dropping now.
-
They have started now. Most moose will be shed by the 1st week of January. They are the first deer to shed in our region.
-
I have seen wt sheds already!
-
I have seen a few whiteys missing sides already.. seen moose in prior years shed in November
-
Id like to see these wt sheds. Pretty early? Old or sick buck? I have known of some fresh sheds last week of december but its still real close to the end of the rut for any healthy buck to loose his defence.

I can take you to a place where a buck sheds every year a week before thanksgiving. A wt and he is very big.

A bell curve always starts somewhere. Just like seeing a healthy buck still packing in May. Happens, just isn't average.
What I am interested in proving or finding out........some say animals shed almost the exact time every year (themselves I am talking) yet some say the bigger the buck/bull the earlier they shed. Can't really have it both ways. I've kinda seen it both so maybe again there is no hard fast reasoning behind it.
-
I saw my local bulls packin horn still this weekend......8 of them
-
I assume you are talking moose???
-
yes, moose.......and a few elk
-
actually seen about a 130" whitey packin both sides too
-
Miles thanks for the pm. With your advice I think I know of a couple of good spots (snow shows required). I will keep you posted. :)
-
You live in the right area Wayner
-

Over in the NE right now hunting my raffle tags and my dad pick up a 4pt Wt shed. Saw 10 bull moose over the last couple days they still had them both.
-
Heard of a few moose running around with one paddle on there head and saw one photo of a one. So im hitting the hills tomorrow. Hopefully ill be posting some pics of paddles! :) :)
-
I have had a few whitetails coming in that have shed, or are in the process. The first bald buck was on the 13th of Dec., which seems early to me since it was a young buck. Other than that, I now have one bald 3 point and a one horn spike.
-
moose in my hood are still packin. I saw 6 bucks last weds and they were all packin too. getting plose though.

I always say..."They shed when the antler falls off and hits the ground". Could be today, could be tomorrow, or it could be a month from now. There are certain times when I expect certain things to happen, but almost every year while shed hunting I see things that just make me scratch my head. I've gone so far as to keep detailed records on calenders with dates of sheds found, numbers found, location, past snow storms and amount of accumulation, weather, etc... and then use it to attempt to figure out exactly when they had to have shed their antlers. You can narrow it down as to a time frame for the majority, but even that can be off year to year. Yes, I'm a little crazy about shed hunting...I've know that for about 16 years now. :chuckle:
I too have been keeping a log of where, when, elevation, snow fall,temp,size...the list goes on. I'm trying to break it down but theres so many factors. I have however found the same bucks sheding in the same bed several years in a row but never at the same time :dunno: I think it's the mystery of the whole process that keeps me moving. Good luck to you all this season.
-
mica unit is very well known for early dropping every year for whiteys, been hunting the area for 20 years, see bucks every year by late Nov dropping. I know of 3 bucks this year shot in Dec that had sides fall off when recovering them
-
Has anyone found any moose sheds yet?
-
i was gonna go up yesterday, but saw the group of bulls I am watching in my spotter.......still packin'
-
Whitetail are starting to drop, a buddy has 5 browns already.
-
Any body finding paddles yet? I've gone looking a few times now but no luck.
-
Not even worth getting out and looking now! 13 inches of fresh snow on top of them now. :(
-
Every time I start thinking about going it snows another foot :(. I'll just have to be patient.
-

I went looking for moose antlers for my first time this year today. I struck gold too! Actually brown. I found a nice matched set in the first hour and and half. I came across the first one laying at the base of a rub tree. Then circled around and found the other side about 200 yards away shortly later. It was awesome. I had to cut the day short but will look more tomorrow.
-
Nice set!! Good luck with some more.
-
Great set off paddles!
-
Hey shedcrazy, thanks for wishing me luck. I went back out today and found another matched set. I cant believe it! I found this pair literally laying on top of each other, mostly covered in snow, after about 3 hours of looking. Anybody else finding any paddles?
-
Right on HornHoarder!
What type of terrain are you looking for them in? Reprod, open timber, fresh cuts etc.?
-
Another great set! Nice work !

Hey Alan K, I found both sets in the same general area, maybe a half mile apart. It is mostly open timber with some pine thickets. there are also several brushy areas where the moose feed. I found them in the buckbrush.
-
Nice work! This thread has been on for a while nice to see some bone!
