Well obviously the shot was too far for that bullet. The velocity wasn't high enough for it to expand. So exactly which bullet was it? I'd like to know so I know what not to use. Federal loads all kind of different bullets- Noslers, Barnes, and their own.

Congrats on the hunt, you guys did really good. I'm thinking about Montana for next year.

Ok thanks. I guess for long range shooting like that you'd be better off with Ballistic Tips. But I shot an antelope in Montana at just over 300 yards with a 150 grain Ballistic Tip and it didn't even make it to the opposite side of the body cavity, on a broadside, behind the shoulder shot.

Did you find the other bullet? How far did the deer go after you shot it?

I had to shoot again at 300 and 200,   the other two did good damage,   the deer bedded at one point.  the other two bullets shattered and did the job.  From the time i shot the two at 406yds.  the when it finally hit dirt the deer went barely over 100 yds.

I have to agree, I've never had accubonds do that. Must've been a bad lot or a powder glitch of some sort.

It was an absolute blast to be there this year with you guys!  Hopefully we can do it again in the next couple years.  As Jason said, we went 6 for 7 as a group.  I was the one that couldn't put it together for some reason.  Had a couple opportunities and a few shots in some miserable weather.  Guess that's what I get for being the only one to get one in WA this year  :chuckle:  From our camp to all the stories, this is a trip I will never forget.  Great friends and great times, besides the cougar scare  :yike:  Getting to watch Bob shoot his buck, Jason skinning his, and meeting up with Jake after he got his, just awesome! I will post some pictures as well from the trip.  Thanks for posting J.

This was a great year for Montana.  A couple of good winters + good nutrition for 2 summers + all that evil weather blowing in during the rut = lots of good bucks.
Looks like you guys were there "when the big one blew in" too.  Anyone who hunted Montana this year in late November has a good "weather story".

I used that same load on my deer this year 400+ yrds. the bullet expanded and blew thru. must have been a light load in that one.

So we left Des Moines at 1:45pm on Wednesday and arrived in camp at 6:30am Thursday. Set up camp and got everything orginized. Headed out for a evening hunt around 1:30 and and my brother shots one. So after a 15 hour drive and a hour and half hunt his 8 day hunt is over! Hadnt even  slept yet. Anyways he saw this buck from 600 yards away and stalked to with in 130 yards. He sat there and watched it for quite some time. He wasnt going to shot it, didnt think it was big enough and it was still the first day. He even took out his camera and took a picture of it. Then it moved its head a certain way and he thought that is was alot bigger then he thought. So two shots later his hunt is over.  It ended up being the largest buck taken for the week. 25" 4x4.

Finally got the pics of my and my dads bucks upload.

After my brother got his the first evening hunt I was thinking this is going to be a good hunt. Well I passed on shots at two average 4 points the first day and then pass on a good 3 point a couple days later. Then on the Wednesday of the hunt I missed a good 4 point.  :bash: But I have a pretty good excuse. It was super cold with temps in the single digits that morning and light snow. Well to make a long story short.. I pulled the trigger 4 times before it finally shot. Firing pin (SP?) must of been frozen. I even tried ejecting the round and the bolt wouldnt even open! Lets just say I was in panic mode by attempt #4 and just missed. Wasnt even expecting the gun to fire. He was at 250.

Anyways came down to the last evening hunt on Thursday. We were leaving the next morning and I was prepared to go home empty handed. There was still 3 of use that hadnt tagged out yet and it was crunch time. Well at about 3:45pm I jumped a doe and this 3 point out of a ravine and dropped him at 180 yards. He aint what I was after but after passing 3 larger bucks I was pretty excited to close the deal with a hour left on my hunt.

My brother was tagging along with my dad and they were on the next draining over so he came down and gave me a hand and my other hunting partner that hadnt tagged out also showed up.

And heres the best part... My dad said he was going to stay up top and hunt until dark. Well at about 4:45 we hear a shot and we were like "no way!" Sure enough my old man shot a decent little 3x2 walking back to the truck. He was only 200 yards from the truck! I guess we got it done just in the nick of time!! It was a very fun evening hunt!!!!

Here are a few pics of my buck.

Ok, so I took forever to add these and I apologize for the delay.  Here is the final buck from our group and story to go along.  This was shot by our buddy NXS-Hunter.  Also added some additional pics from the trip.

NXS and I spent most of our time in the woods in the same general area as each other.  It was an awesome experience to be there when he got this guy.  A few days before he missed on a monster double droptine from just over 500 yards out.  This one definitely made up for it.  The day after Right-Place shot his deer he suggested NXS and I head out in the same are and take a couple ridges near by.  After setting out and not seeing much movement, we came to a point where we decided it was best to get a bit further apart and cover more ground.

Well that didn't last long.  About 30 seconds after splitting up NXS was calling for me to come back as he saw something in the distance.  We both get our binos up and he pointed to a small tree way off in the distance.  After finally figuring out where the hell he was trying to get me to look, I could see a small tree thrashing back and forth.  After a quick pause we both caught glimpse of his rack and he looked like a decent deer.  Since NXS spotted him I told him to put a stalk on it and I would continue watching from where I was.  We ranged it really quick and he was just over 600 yards out on a hillside, working over this little tree like no other.  NXS took off towards the deer, staying low on the backside of the ridge we were on.  As he was getting closer he took a wrong turn and headed off too far left and down the wrong side of the ridgeline  :bash:  As I was trying to somehow signal to him his mistake, I was also starting to think I may have to go finish this up for him  :chuckle:

Well he came back towards me with a look on his face like he had lost his deer.  He got on the radio and asked what happened when I explained he just needed to pop his head over the knoll and take a look.  Though I think my exact words were "YOU F'ING *censored*, HE'S RIGHT OVER THE HILL TO YOUR RIGHT, HURRY THE F UP!!!"  The buck was still there, thrashing away, not a care in the world.  NXS ranged him again and found that he was now only 330 yds out.  He decided this would be his opportunity and setup to take the shot.

By this time I had made my way to within 400 yds of the deer and was watching intently while waiting for a shot to go off, then BOOM!  Then seconds later another shot, and finally a third.  WTF??? Did he miss?  I slowly worked my way to him and asked what had happened.  He said he misssed the first two times but was confident he hit him on the third.  Looking across the canyon we realized it wasn't going to be a fun hike over there.  We actually had a little fun with it and slid down the hill like we were two little kids.  After tromping through the woods for a few minutes I hear NXS let out a whoop and a hell ya  :IBCOOL: We found this guy piled up in a bush and could see his slide path as he must have slid a hundred yards before crashing where he did.  Light was fading fast so we tried to hurry and get him cleaned out and quartered up.  BY the time we had finished it was pitch black.  We agreed it would be best to hang the meat in a tree overnight and come back the next morning wih packboards to get it out.  As we were preparing to head up out of the gully, headlamps on and freezing our asses off, we hear a growl right behind us.  :yike: Holy crap, we had a cougar lurking in the dark.  I fired a shot from my rifle and we began to make a ton of noise.  I tell you what, I have never moved so fast up a mountain in all my life.  Thankfully, nothing followed us out and we had all our buddies waiting for us at the trailhead.  NXS was able to go back the next day and recover his meat.

Unfortunately I was the only loser on this trip and not able to bag one myself.  I went down swinging in the below zero weather on the final day.  All in all it was an amazing trip and I can't wait to go back.  Great friends and great times!!!

As he lays!

Looks like a damn good time. I am trying to put something like that together this year, well everything except the camping part because I don't have the gear yet. I think it would be awesome to spend a week with your buddies out in the woods and away from everything.
