Title: Not a hunting rig?
Post by: Swiftkid on December 06, 2010, 07:39:36 PM
I was tellin my girlfriend about this and it got me a little mad so now i'm gonna vent to you guys. I believe it was the day after opening day of modern deer this year which was oct17th. Our hunting party of 4 were heading to a area to drop off a vehicle acouple miles away from where we would be starting...time was about 0615. We were almost to where we were going to drop the truck off when we ran into a older white porshe 944 sitting in the middle of the busted up gravel road. A hunter in orange was out of the car and stopped us. I rolled down my window and asked him what was the problem. He said something about "wheel disconnect" i hadn't looked at the car much but my brother noticed the wheel was totally broke off of the rotor. He then asked if he and his partner.... who was sitting in the porshe could get a ride down to where his hunting buddies were. The truck was full and would have been crammed with the two guys and 3 of us. 2 of our guys hopped out and went to my buddies truck that was following us and the 2 hitchhikers hopped in. I kind of gave them a bad time about bringing that kind of ride to the area, they were pretty much asking for trouble he made some excuse like his truck was in the shop. So graciously my dad took them to there hunting area which was about another 3 miles down this road...we were probaly the only other vehicle that went down the road this morning so if they wouldn't off caught us they would have been screwed...they didn't bother to say thanks or offer any cash. It wasnt the way i like to start off my morning hunting. It through us off by about a half hour. They could have walked to there camp easy enough. Just pissed me off!!!!

The road they were on is pretty beatin and never taken car of. Although i have taken my 95 camaro down the same road at over 60mph  on many occasion i can't say many cars would make it. The car ended up sitting there almost tilll the last day of the season before they were able to move it.

took my little toyota down this broken rd for turkey a few years ago, early am. desided to nap a bit before day light. was woke up by a prius bashing down the rd,this is a nasty, nasty rd. the guy was bouncing, sloshing & just tearing crap up. i asked him what was the hurry? he told me he was trying to beat the other shroomers to the spot.-a prius hybred- in 4x country-for shrooms??

My 2000 Kia Sephia goes everywhere.  Road Maintenance?...Is that where my mirrors nock down all the alder saplings as I bomb down the roads.
My only regret is that people think my car is purple when in fact it is blue...its just my afterwork hunting rig though.  When I want to get serious I jump in my 4x4 Forr..uhhh...Chevvv....uhh...ok I admit it I drive a Nissan Titan.  I would have liked to buy american, but I can't afford a chevy and don't get me started on Fords.

Those must be the "organic" shrooms that are so sought after by the  :tree1: type

I see quite a few small cars go way up in on the forest roads.  Saw a convertible Audi at trail once.  It kind of stood out in a parking lot full of Subaru Outbacks.

My first hunting rig in high school was a 1959 Ford Edsel 4-door with a broken gas gauge, broken wipers ( used a clothes hanger out the window) and NO Reverse.   I'd have to always look for turnarounds with a bank on the side of the road you could drive up and coast back to turn around on.  Only had to shoot off one locked gate because we couldn't turn-around at it.  Great fun.  Never hunted alone with it and carried a backup can of gas in the trunk ( safe !) .  It was a one-season rig though - go figure  :chuckle: :chuckle:

Last year for early archery elk season up in the 336 unit We were driving up the road and came up on a small blue Geo metro.  :chuckle: Had 2 guys in it. They were at least 300+ each shoulder to shoulder. They both barley fit into the car.  Had there bows in the back of the car. It was the funniest this I ever saw. Dont know if the car could have lasted up there for to long.  :chuckle:

My first hunting rig was a 74 Plymouth Duster painted game department green.  When your 16 beggers can't be choosers.

I saw a father/son combo with the teenage (or so) son hanging is barrel out the window. He had a short bipod on it as well. Look goofy as all get out, but yeah, I figured they were up to no good.

Was working my way into an area before daylight, fairly rough rutted up road, but my K5 with 32's was handling it fine. Here's this POS toyota car dead in the middle of the road. The young lad and his big girl had punched a hole in their oil pan and were stranded.

So they expected me to stop my hunt, and take them back to civilization! I thought that was funnier than hell. It would have cost me over an hour, and they were not in any danger. So I told them if they were still there when I got done hunting, I'd give them a ride out. A few hours later, I'm on my way out. They're still sitting in their car. So I let them climb into my blazer. I had a pack of cinamon rolls on the back seat, and I noticed the big girl couldn't keep her eyes off them. Finally she couldn't take it any more, and asked me if she could have one of those cinamon rolls. I obliged, but was thinking to myself- you gotta be kidding me.

I got them to civilization (paved roads and telephones) and told them this was as close to town as I was going. They started to give me a hard time for not taking them on in to town, etc. I was getting a little PO'd at this point. I just told them to get out, and consider themselves lucky I took them this far out of my way.

They probably came from a long line of social parasite "entitlists".

My firt hunting rug was a 92 Plymouth Colt.  Some would be suprised where you can get into with a front wheel drive.  I have still never owned a 4x4.

Ran accross a father son out hunting in 09' in their wifes/moms newer model VW Bug.  They hit a rock in the road and put a big hole in there oil pan.  (BTKR . . .5000 x 5200 line).  Towed them back to a friends house about 10 miles away with my 2by Ranger.

My rig to get to hunting camp is a 94 Corsica.  Any meat has been in a cooler though, nothing wearing skin.

My first was a VW bug... Got my first deer by myself without dad around with it, stuffed it into the hood whole and and showed up at Dads place with it, needed help gutting it! We was home sick and I woke him, he gutted it in his bathrobe next to his house in Olympia....  :chuckle:

came across two guys (father & son) in an old ford taurus first weekend of elk in 154.  they were up off blacksnake looking for the watershed.  the old man (80) had drawn a WS tag, but they couldn't find the watershed!  said he only put in to keep his points...  earlier that day they had been up klicker mountain and got kicked off with directions to the fence up off BS.  there was 8 inches of wet, muddy snow and pretty decent ruts just above where they stopped.  we told them they had traveled as far as the taurus would go and pointed them in the direction to the lower edge of the WS.  we were over that direction a bit later and saw a herd of 75 or so with 4 bulls.  one good one was bugling while two raghorns were sparring.  500 yards off the road.  by the looks of them, either or both would have had a heart attack down there!

To really make a hunting rig you need lots of stickers--MossyOak, Born2Hunt, the Browning symbol, Scent-Lock, Real Tree, etc.  During late buck it looked like NASCAR in the woods.

This year I took my 04 dodge intrepid hunting. LOL I was quite surprised with the car. it handled some muddy and rocky situations. The truck is big enough for 2 deer   But now that I finally got my motor in my truck. My truck is my planed hunting rig next season.

Rasbo's post reminded me of when I took my 65 Falcon Futura up in Winston, back in '95 for archery deer.  Drove in through Lander's creek, came out down by Castle Rock, a long trek with that small gas tank and a built 289!  I was very lost that day.  I can't remember why I wasn't driving a truck or jeep that day....

1972 Rally Nova was my everything rig in college until I was given a 1970 chevy short box truck that had 3 complete motors...in pieces in the bed.   A bit of finagling later, a whole tube of silicon gasket maker and RE-USING head gaskets and BEARINGS mixing and matching from all 3 until i had the right clearances....I had a running truck.

The Nova brought out a few elk and deer from the Manastash and the Colockum.

Before college i had a 1954 Willys truck with a 283 in it...STILL  :bash: that i SOLD that.
