Title: Best coyote calls
Post by: texasbuckmaster on December 06, 2010, 08:16:13 PM
Im fairly new to yote hunting and was wondering what are the best calls on the market today, which call do you use the most and which one is most effictive, Just want to get 1 or 2 to start off with. i already have the primos double cottontail. I know most people use electronic calls but i just dont have the money for one right now.

You definitely don't need E-calls. And the short answer to the best call for coyotes. Is the one in your hand. Just about anything will call a coyote in. Worry more about your set up. And call with confidence.

I would go with a good quality loud howler for one, as a locator and attractor.  Then a Primos "Raspy Croaker" is a good versatile call that can make prey distress calls or rodent squeaks, depending on what holes in the call you cover when it's blown.  E-callers are great, but a few hand calls and some practice wiil get you in the game.  And no worries about batteries going dead!

Hand calls:

Bugling Bull Game calls

Dirty Dog howler
yipper yapper howler
Select-A-Meal distress or
Distemper open reed distress

All are easy to use and are top quality sounds for production calls. :twocents:

If Eric Clapton played your Kmart guitar it would sound better than you playing your Les Paul/Strat whizbang custom!
I think any call will call, but you gotta learn how to play it, and some play easier than others. With any of them you must practice. Listen to all the sound bytes you can, that said. I call different than Rick, who calls different than Jerry Malbeck, etc, we all kill coyotes. There aint no "right" sound.
Do your self a favor, get one of bearmanrics sets to start with.
if ya gotta go factory, get some internal reed "who cares" brand, forget Howling until you know what you are doing, go all predator bait sounds.

I learned to call without any coaching or listening to recorded calls. I just learned by mistakes. Nobody helped me, just the real calls of each varmint.

Got a Fox pro Scorpion for my birthday this year. I think my wife bought it to get me out of the house more. I'm good with that. I'm going to sight in the .243 with a new scope this weekend. I've worked up some loads for it too.   :)

This is the first time and I bookmarked your site. I am new to small caliber coyote and varmint hunting. Which one of your calls would be better for Eastside hunting in open areas? I now you would like to sell me all of your calls but which would work best for me?

I have nothing but Bearman Rick calls around my neck or in my pocket.   I could probably do with one of them, but whats the fun in that.

Rainshadow also has a nice predator sound.   I  owned one for a day but that was a gift for a special person I know.   Now he has bearman Rick calls and a Rainshadow one.

While I have not blown one of Ric's new howlers, I know he uses the same manufacturer that molds the KOP howlers for pouring his toneboards.  The KOP is still the best "production" howler I have ever used.  ELK is easier to use for yip and yodel howls, but doesn't sound any better.

I agree that you should get an enclosed reed with a jack voice and one with a cottontail reed, and get a howler and open reed to start practicing with.  I love the Psyco Tweety, but a lot of folks are blowing them nowadays.  You can go to a craft store and get some different mylar thicknesses and cut your own reeds to give your call a little different sound.  Get some bands for your open reed howlers and distress until you learn where to put your teeth.

Just went to Rick's site and ordered a couple of his howlers.  What a great gift idea for a fellow hunter!  One is for me and the other will be a birthday present for the son of a friend who will be 9 in January.  The kid shot a bear this year, and loves to hunt and fish.

I've got a couple of cheapie howlers, one I hate and one that is OK.  Looking forward to trying a good one.  I've got a Foxpro Scorpion and like it, but there are times I prefer the mouth calls.

I'm going to have to try one of Rick's calls!  I swear by the E.L.K. Power Howler.  Best howler I have ever used and I have tried at least a dozen others.

I've got a bag of calls under my truck seat, a mix of Bearman Rick, Rainshadow and various production.  The production calls are very seldom used, I don't think you will find a better call than these guys make.  I use a different call each time I go to a set up.  In cold weather you need the open reed, it don't freeze up like the internal reed will.

Sorry Ric, didn't mean to give out bad info.  I thought Loren Reese was doing your toneboards, but when I went to his site I see that he does your R-series of calls, unless you have moved everything over to Yellerdog.   :dunno:

Here is the howler I was referring to.  They changed the name up since the 2002 and 2003 model I have.

That Howler is from Loren Reese made for Predator sniper styx. I have way to many call's to build to explain everything. Rick
