I know we can only enter one in the photo of the month contest so let's see some more snow shots... be they field photos or scenery or whatnot!

Post by: swanny on December 13, 2010, 07:32:04 AM: Not exactly a animal winter photo, but it is of an Argosy Christmas ship from the bonfire last week at Redondo Beach. If you live in Des Moines or the surrounding area, there will be another bonfire and the Argosy ships on Thursday night this week, around 8:30. Starbucks coffee and cookies will be there for free/donation.

While hiking last Saturday I ran across some odd ice formations. The ice was on alder tree parts that looked like the bark split and the ice was extruding out of the inner wood itself. I thought that the fine webbing look was kind of unusual. I am posting normal pics followed by close ups of the same ice. I could touch the ice and it would just melt away and there was nothing that the ice was bonded to except the main piece of wood that it was coming out of. I found this strange but I thought that it was really cool nature art. Is this normal where some of you guys are and is there a name for this?

I dug a little. This is often called hair ice or silk frost. Other pictures I found were from Germany, our peninsula or coastal BC. Thanks, very interesting.

I believe it was just above freezing, but in a shade area. If I had looked at my Rino I would have known.

Post by: Suncrest Sniper on January 02, 2011, 03:00:51 PM: That frozen lake shot reminded me of all the years of ice fishing back in West Central Minnesota. (Alexandria area) real cold falls we'd be on 5 inches of crystal clear ice by Thanksgiving weekend. It is a eerie feeling walking on it when you know there's 40 some feet of water below and you can see it crack as you walk. Clear ice is the strongest and safest but it's the worst for fishing through. Thanks for picture and the memory.
