My mom has a large black bear that is getting into everything at her house. She has several dogs that bark like crazy at it almost every night and it tears up her bird feeders and dog food etc. Of course it didn't show up until Nov 16th. One of the neighbors called it in but was told nothing can be done if it is only 1 bear. Does anyone know a good way to get rid of it besides SSS? Too late for the last S I guess.

I know a paintball gun is effective on moose. I don't know how it would work on a bear.
-
We have the same problem. You have to put away all food products and they will leave. Take down feeder, put garbage in garage, no dog food or apples etc out. It won't be a happy ending for the bear if you don't.
-
She did all that and now it is the neighbor's problem but unfortunately I live just 1/4 mile down the hill and have kids and dogs I'm worried about too. It's a BIG bear and not scared of much. We all want it out of the area. It will probably disappear soon, there's lots of guns in our neck of the woods. I would've loved to see it a month ago.

Leave out a big can of Crisco or a can of Bag balm. :chuckle:

Not sure if this is true or not, but I have been told that if you take some Twinkies and stuff them with jalapeno peppers, the bear will get an upset stomach and move on to another food source.
Maybe just an old wives tale, but might be worth a try, anyone else heard of or know if this works?

Damn that sounds pretty good. Maybe deep fry the whole thing and serve with beer? I'm in!

Call WDFW, they'll remove it or haze it so it doesn't come back. If I remember correctly that's what happened to TMike's pet bear.
Paint ball guns, a whole lot of noise and the Korelian Bear dogs will learn him...

Professional Assistance
Wildlife offices throughout Washington respond to bear sightings when there is a threat to public safety or property. A sighting or the presence of a bear does not constitute a threat to property or public safety. Typically, no attempt will be made by a wildlife agency staff to remove, relocate, or destroy the animal.
Problem bears can be live trapped by specially trained wildlife professionals and moved to more remote areas; however, such removals are expensive, time consuming, and seldom effective. (Once a bear has tasted human food or garbage, it will remember the source and return again and again—bears have been known to return over 100 miles to a human food source after having been relocated.) Using tranquilizing drugs on bears to facilitate removal is not without risks to bears and humans.
When other methods have failed, lethal removal of problem animals may be the only alternative.
Contact your local wildlife office for additional information and, in the case of an immediate emergency, call 911 or any local law enforcement office, such as the state patrol.

We had the same problem several years ago in the same spot and they came out and trapped 3 of them followed by long lectures on how it was our fault for having bird feeders and dog food etc...This time it was called in and they said they would do nothing at this point. I guess it needs to attack something first.

WTH? Since when did problem bears run in packs? Isn't it always 1 bear? You'd think that now that hunting season is winding down to nothing that the game Dept could spare some time to relocate???

"Yes Mr. WDFW, he was chasing me across the yard. I just happened to have my rifle with me." :chuckle:
-
They won't relocate them they will do a hard release right on your property. I've had it done twice because the neighbor wouldn't stop feeding the "squirrels". We had a sow and cub on our porch a couple weeks ago because my wife left some apples there. After everything was put away they left. I can see why the gammies were annoyed the second time and I don't want to call them again. A "fed bear is a dead bear." That was a quote they used.

"LOOK OUT HE"S HEADIN RIGHT FOR US"---Uncle Jimbo :chuckle:

Worse case I guess it will be headed to hibernation pretty soon, right? That would defer the problem till the spring I suppose.

Buy a couple cans of Bear pepper spray, spread peanut butter and jelly on the cans then wrap them with bacon. leave it outside in the yard. When he find it, bites down on the can and punctures it, he wll never come back :chuckle:

ser300wsm - We have done this to several Brown Bears in Alaska and it works great! They end up spinning around in circles balling like crazy and drive their heads into the ground and leave a very wide circle deep in the ground. They never come back to camp, guess they figure they can find something that taste better elsewhere :chuckle:

The pepper spray idea sounds like it may work. We had also heard the hot pepper in a doughnut thing but never tried. The trick will be getting it out of the dogs reach but still within the bears. There are a couple of German Shorthairs that jump and climb pretty well at the house. A couple of the neighbors said they are "taking care of it" but if it comes back I'll try the pepper surprise. Thanks for the input.
